It never fails. If you’re the cover athlete for EA Sports Madden NFL Football, somehow your season will either go to crap, or you’ll have a massive injury that will most likely end your season, or even worse, end your career. And it’s happened once again.
Madden NFL Football 07 cover athlete Shaun Alexander suffered from a broken left foot after their game on Sunday against the New York Giants. Seahawks Coach Mike Holmgren announced the status of Alexander yesterday, and said that Alexander has a “small crack†and “displaced fracture†in his foot. Holmgren wouldn’t state exactly how long Alexander is expected to be out, but he did say that they were looking at a few weeks.
While an incredible endorsement opportunity for any player, you would think players would get a little nervous. Last year Donovan McNabb suffered from a sports hernia in the first game of the season, in 2005 Ray Lewis broke his wrist, and in 2004 Michael Vick fractured his right fibula the day after the game was released.
Injuries aren’t the only thing that plague players. In 2002 Vikings Quarterback Daunte Culpepper had a worse season than he did prior (and then had a season ending knee injury). Eddie George coughed up on a key play that led the Titans to lose in the playoffs. Barry Sanders retired in 2000 just a week before training camp, even though he was sharing the cover with John Madden.
Maybe EA Sports should go back to what they did prior to 2000 – just put Madden on the cover.
