The Xbox Live Vision Camera will be released this week (retailers are pointing at Tuesday-Thursday), and today Microsoft will automatically update four of the current Xbox Live Arcade titles to support Xbox Live Vision. The Xbox Live Arcade titles include Bankshot Billiards 2, Hardwood Hearts, Hardwood Spades, and Hardwood Backgammon.
One other game is currently Xbox Live Vision enabled – Uno. If these four games support it the same way Uno does, your Gamer Picture will consist of what ever your camera is pointed at.
Xbox Live Vision camera packages begin at $39.99.

In anticipation of the nearing Tokyo Game Show, Microsoft held a press conference today to discuss their new marketing strategy in Japan, announce new games and hardware packages, and finally give everyone a glimpse at gameplay from Mistwalker’s Blue Dragon and Lost Odyssey. Read on for a breakdown of the event and plenty of photos and video.
Takashi Sensui
Head MC for the press conference was Xbox general manager Takashi Sensui. He stated that Microsoft is still on track to reach 10 million Xbox 360 units sold worldwide by the end of the year. Of course, no one mentioned the dismal sales of the 360 in Japan so far. Sensui then discussed Microsoft’s marketing slogan in Japan, “Do! Do! Do!†– the three pillars of which are Do Games, Do Choice, and Do Live.
Metal Gear creator Hideo Kojima was in attendance interestingly enough.
The Do Choice banner covers all accessories and hardware. On November 2, Microsoft will debut several new offerings in Japan: the core system (29,800 yen/$254), vision camera (4,200 yen/$36), wireless headset (6,300 yen/54), and the 20GB hard drive (9,975 yen/$85). The wireless driving wheel is also on its way, though no price or release date was revealed.
Lost Odyssey
To get the core system moving off of store shelves, the company is offering a “launch commemoration pack†of the core system that also includes Ninety-Nine Nights and Project Gotham Racing 3. The separate HD-DVD drive will launch on November 22 with 1080p and 5.1 surround sound capabilities for 20,790 yen ($177). The 1080p standard almost guarantees that we’ll see an HDMI or DVI cable for Xbox 360 since this is the only way to achieve a signal of this resolution. This is a question we will try to answer once TGS gets into full swing.
Infinite Undiscovery
Next we got to see the first demo of how the HD-DVD interface will actually function. I’ll let the pictures do the talking on this one.
HD-DVD movies will replace the "play game" area in the 360 interface.
Select chapters while the movie is playing in the background.
Watch films from different angles simultaneously with picture-in-picture.
Movies continue to play while you're in the 360 dashboard if you prefer.
The Do Live portion of the event was handled by VP of interactive entertainment business Peter Moore. Moore claimed that there has “never been a more important TGS for Microsoft." He said he was here to make promises and is confident in Xbox 360’s progress so far. Moore also predicts that by mid 2007 Xbox Live will have over 6 million members.
Peter Moore
Live Arcade gamers can expect several classic titles from the likes of companies like Konami (Contra, Gyruss, Track & Field, Rush ‘n Attack, and Yie Ar Kung Fu) and Namco Bandai (Dig Dug, Ms. Pac-Man, and New Rally-X). Moore then announced the Pac-Man World Championship and brought out original Pac-Man creator Toru Iwatani to talk up the tournament. The top ten players on the worldwide leaderboard will be flown to New York City to compete in one final showdown in early 2007.
Toru Iwatani
Takashi Sensui then returned to the stage to discuss the Do Games portion of Microsoft’s strategy. Here they showed new trailers for Dead or Alive Xtreme 2 and Lost Planet, which will hopefully appear on Xbox Live soon. A new RPG from Namco Bandai and developer Tri-Crescendo was revealed next called Trusty Bell. The game has a bright anime style to it and appears to use a traditional battle system. Next on the list was Infinite Undiscovery from Microsoft Game Studios and developer Tri-Ace. Not much information was given about the game other than a single screenshot.
Trusty Bell
Mistwalker studio head Hironobu Sakaguchi then appeared to show off gameplay of Blue Dragon and Lost Odyssey. It turns out that Blue Dragon is almost 100% finished and is ready to release in Japan on December 7. Sakaguchi played the game live in front of that audience. The main character, Shu, runs into enemies and then enters into a separate battle screen. Each of the four party members has a blue “phantom shadow†that appears behind them and does damage by mimicking the character’s movements. Sakaguchi fought several robot enemies and then took on a massive robot boss. The enemy has four legs and drill/blade arms. Here he showed a special attack where Shu summoned the full blue dragon and killed the boss outright. Sakaguchi said the game will feature a job system and last around 40 hours.
Hironobu Sakaguchi
He also played a bit of Lost Odyssey, the story of a "man who cannot die for 1000 years." The game began with some impressive CG of two armies hashing it out on the battlefield. When it’s looking bad for the supposed good guys, the main character runs in and stylishly slays several enemy soldiers. At this point it seemed that the game was going into Dynasty Warriors territory, but when the playable section began it was clearly a traditional turn-based RPG. The soldier chose a few enemies to attack with a cursor and then ran around and chopped them up. Next, he had to take down a huge war tank by attacking its cannons and eventually stabbing it in the face. However, this victory was ultimately wasted as the skies opened up and hot lava obliterated both sides. The unkillable lead character climbed out from the ashes and walked towards the nearest town.
Marumaro, mystery girl, Kluke, Shu, and Jiro from Blue Dragon.
Microsoft concluded the event by sending out Takashi Sensui for one final announcement. In addition to the N3/PGR3 core package, the company will also release a Blue Dragon core bundle on December 7 for the same price of 29,800 yen ($254).
Is this the 360's last chance in Japan?
Microsoft’s really going for the throat on this one. If an inexpensive console bundled with a new game from the original creator of Final Fantasy doesn’t sell Xbox 360s in Japan, then nothing will. It’s make or break time right when Japanese consumers are going to have the PlayStation 3 and Wii dropping in their laps. This holiday season is getting spicier all the time. Now we just have to see if Microsoft’s got anything up their sleeve in the U.S. outside of the Gears of War launch. Hmm, I wonder if the bundle strategy will make it stateside to fight off the new rival consoles? How awesome would it be if we saw a Gears of War premium pack bundle?

Microsoft today kicks off their GameFest developers conference, and in doing so also announces a product in which users can create games for both the Xbox 360 and Windows PCs. Called XNA Game Studio Express, these tools will allow hobbyists, students, indie developers and studios to create games. XNA Game Studio Express will be available for free to anyone with a Windows XP-based PC and will provide them with Microsoft’s next-generation platform for game development. By joining a “creators club†(tenative name) for an annual subscription fee of $99, users will be able to build, test and share their games on Xbox 360 and access materials to help speed the game development progress. The XNA Game Studio Express beta will be available Aug. 30, 2006.
“XNA Game Studio Express will ignite innovation and accelerate prototyping, forever changing the way games are developed,†Satchell said. “By unlocking retail Xbox 360 consoles for community-created games, we are ushering in a new era of cross-platform games based on the XNA platform. We are looking forward to the day when all the resulting talent-sharing and creativity transforms into a thriving community of user-created games on Xbox 360.â€Â
More than 10 universities and their game development schools  including University of Southern California, Georgia Tech College of Computing and Southern Methodist University Guildhall  have already pledged to integrate console game development and XNA Game Studio Express into their curricula for the first time, and Xbox 360 will be the only console at the center of all coursework.
“Great game ideas are incubating in the minds of students everywhere,†said Michael Zyda, director for Gamepipe Labs at the University of Southern California. “With XNA Game Studio Express, Microsoft is investing in these next-generation innovators, creating the canvas for dreamers to express their powerful game ideas. In incorporating XNA Game Studio Express and Xbox 360 consoles into our Gamepipe program, USC will be able to better provide game studios and publishers around the world with a newfound wellspring of talent and opportunity. It’s ingenious.â€Â

Microsoft today announced the debut of Platinum Hits lineup for Xbox 360 software titles, available October 15 at retail locations in North America. The first wave of Platinum Hits games includes Perfect Dark Zero, Project Gotham Racing 3, Kameo: Elements of Power and Need for Speed Most Wanted. The games will carry a manufacturer's suggested retail price of $29.99.
The Xbox Platinum Hits program accounted for more than sixteen million software sales - approximately 16 percent of all Xbox software sold. Platinum Hits titles for the first Xbox console included Halo and Crimson Skies: High Road to Revenge.
"The Platinum Hits program allows existing gamers and new gamers alike to have access to great games at a great price,†said Mitch Koch, corporate vice president of Worldwide Retail Sales for the Interactive Entertainment Business. “Xbox 360 will have a ten million unit head start by the end of 2006, and there will be plenty of new console owners eager to jump in to the best-selling Xbox 360 games."
"Not only does the Platinum Hits program offer games at a great value," Koch added, "it ensures that the platform's best games are available to new customers at an amazing price. And if you missed playing a game the first time around, now is a great reason to pick it up."
"The Platinum Hits program was extremely successful for the Xbox, and we are excited to see it continue on the Xbox 360," said Bob McKenzie, Senior Vice President of Merchandising at GameStop Corp. "When you look at the Xbox 360’s fantastic games library, and now the inclusion of the Platinum Hit program, it is easy to see the great value and choices that all gamers are able to tap into."
The second wave of Platinum Hits arrives in spring of 2007 after launching worldwide this holiday, with titles varying by region. Europe, Asia, Latin America, Japan and Australia will all have Platinum Hits programs with lineups tailored for the specific tastes of gamers in those regions.
