Tuesday aka Christmas I will be finally getting an Xbox 360 and figured I'd ask what are the things I might have to do or some precautions I should take before playing.
Truth and honesty would be nice.
Also if it helps it's the X360 that comes with the Hard drive and a free month silver membership.

If you were on a bus full of gay guys would you get off?
Avoid putting it on top of say....hot cable boxes or other electronics that heat up.
Buy Hitman:Blood Money
I have personally never gone of 360 Live, so others may be better suited to answer your ?'s.
Oh yeah, also drop your Sony bias is you have one. I was so used to playstations that it is really taking some major hand eye adjustments.

Get a fan for the back, i've got one and the amount it cooled down by was excellent.
Oh and get the rechargeable battery pack for the controller as you don't want to be changing batteries all the time.

do NOT get a fan for the back. out of the 3 people i knew that had 360's 2 of em owned these intercoolers and both their systems broke and the others didnt.
that could be coincidence but who knows.
as for gears of war i really couldnt stand that game. i guess theres nothing wront with the game i just didnt see all the fuss.
the only two games i coudl really recommend for the 360 would be Oblivion and Assassin's Creed.

This is correct. The 360 uses a very underpowered power supply, and the fan only adds additional stress to it. By adding the additional stress, the power levels fluctuate, which can cause many different problems. If you're sticking the 360 in an open cabinet, put a small table fan back there that blows the air OUT. Do not blow it towards the 360, as you're only blocking the flow of air out of the 360 and blowing dust and other particles towards it.
Don't even bother sticking it in a closed cabinet. The thing will just cook itself.
Well with the fan issue, i've never had a single problem at all.
I've just upgraded my fan to one of the elite ones and it is doing its job very well.
