Perhaps it is just me, but does anyone else feel that Nintendo should be kicking themselves HARD over the pricing of the Wii. As we all know, we live in a supply/demand economy, with the demand for a product determining the pricing of it. Nearly 6 months after the launch of the Wii, stores are still having trouble keeping a supply for more than just a few hours. The short term success at this point simply can't be argued - it's been tremendous; of course the long term is still quite questionable. At this point though, as someone who still CANNOT find a Wii, and is willing to pay well over the $249 price tag, I have to ask - was Nintendo's only mistake so far, under pricing the Wii?
Not at all. It looks like that on the surface but there's two things I take from it. 1. Nintendo hasn't done anything positive in years, so to price the system in the range of the X-Box or PS3 would have been a grve mistake. They had to hit the families not willing to spend their life savings on a system.. 2. This worlks out just fine for them because from what I hear they still make quite a bit on every system they sell.. something that can't be said for the others.

Re: Pricing of the Wii
Yeah, the pricing of a system works on the idea of something called the Gillette Principle. Basically, when Gilette first started making their safety razors, they actually sold the actual razors at such a low price, they were actually losing money. But only they manufactured the blades that fit the razor, and so made an absolute killing in profit with those blades.
The same works with consoles. Nintendo will be making only minimal profit, or maybe even a loss, from the sale of each console, but what they now have is thousands of homes all owning systems they make the games for. As a result, they make an enormous amount of profit on the games, so long term, it's a much better thing for Nintendo.
And i apologise if I rambled a little there... :S

Re: Pricing of the Wii
I found me a wii at a walmart in some place known as Clinton Missouri during a pit stop on a trip to Silver Dollar City. I advise driving 2 hours into some little or not so big town and searching. Or not, if you don't really love the wii that is.

The Wii must make a shitload from additional accessories as well.
In practise its a good £45 for a controller because you have to buy the nunchuck as well so when Mario Party 8 comes out you're gonna need 4 controllers and 4 nunchucks which is an awful lot of money.
Plus you have the Classic Controllers if you wanna play the Wii Shop games because they've made the controls so bloody awkward if you wanna save some money and use your gamecube controllers.
Plus you have the Wii Lan adapter if you hate wireless because its shit and unreliable and the games themselves, although at the moment there is bugger all worth buying for Wii and hasn't been since I finished Rayman.

lol... Kind fo off topic, but if you came from KC to Branson to go to "Steal Your Dollar City" You in most likelyhood drove right past my house To view links or images in this forum your post count must be 20 or greater. You currently have 0 posts.
But back on topic. All consoles do this. Like Halfboy said there isn't much mark up on a console... in fact most will lose money the more that they sell... in PS3's case over 300 per console... but the mark up on games and accesories can out right piss you off if you know how much it actually is. Think about it though. The Wii is consider by most a social party console due to it's easy method of controls and it's lack of big 1 player titles. So you will put in large amounts of money for the extra wii remotes, then the nunchuck attatchments... and if you don't have them all ready there is a chance you'll also invest in old Gamecube controllers that work for virtual console and some of the newer games that are coming out.... so they are also finding new ways to market old product they might have in surplus as well.

I have spent probably an additional $300 so far on erxtras for the Wii (including games) I'm sure they are making their money back. I am nothing but amazed by the Wii right now. I just got Zelda two days ago and almost called in sick. I have to remotes and nunchucks and will try to get up to four. So expensive though.
If Wii cost more it would kill the sales and give 360 the advantage. Plus the Wii is already a pathetically overpriced piece of shit that shouldn't cost what it does. It was designed to be sold for $100 and that is what it should have been sold for since that is all it is worth at the most.

That's kind of funny since they are still consistently sold out at a lot of places meaning that a lot of people feel differently than you about the value of the system.
The Wii is a success. No other way to look at it.
