GDC 2007: "The Wii is a Piece of S***!"
One of Spore's developers rants about Nintendo's "two GameCubes stuck together with duct tape."
by Daemon Hatfield
US, March 7, 2007 - During a session at GDC this morning entitled "Burning Mad - Game Publishers Rant," time was taken about half way through to allow developers a chance to spew their own rants. One speaker, Chris Hecker, currently working on Spore at Maxis, took the opportunity to call out Nintendo for not taking games seriously.
"The Wii is a piece of s***!" Hecker began his talk, which was called "Fear of a Wii Planet." He blasted a few bars of Public Enemy to set the tone. Hecker said the Wii is nothing more than two GameCubes stuck together with duct tape, and that the console isn't powerful enough to provide the next-gen experience he has been waiting for.
Although he stated the system is "severely underpowered," Hecker noted that he wasn't simply referring to the Wii's graphical capabilities. He wants to spend a console's CPU making games more intelligent, and he has found the Wii doesn't have the power to process things like complicated AI.
Hecker also took Nintendo to task for not taking games seriously enough. "It's not clear to me that Nintendo gives a s*** about games as an art form," he said. To illustrate his point, he searched for references to games as art on all three console manufacturers web sites. While he found numerous such references on both the official PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 sites, Wii.com had none at all. He then shared quotes from executives at Sony and Microsoft talking about games as a serious artistic medium, and then a quote from a Nintendo executive saying the company only wanted to make "fun" games.
Hecker ended his spirited rant with two demands for Nintendo: First, recognize and push games as serious art. And two, "make a console that doesn't suck ass."
I don't think I have ever agreed with a developer rant as much as I do this one To view links or images in this forum your post count must be 20 or greater. You currently have 0 posts.

Re: A developer that knows what he is talking about....
Let's see, Wii is beating Xbox 360 and PS3's ass in sales. Almost every single developer has nothing but positive stuff to say about Wii, and the Wii is bringing in new gamers (rather than just going for hardcore gamers).
Besides, who is this joke or a programmer? It doesn't matter what he thinks since Will Wright does like the Wii.
Re: A developer that knows what he is talking about....
Looks like he very quickly changed his mind. Either that, or he's trying to save his ass from being fired:
Quote:
I don't know who has read the internet, yesterday. In a [unintelligible] panel I said a bunch of things. I was trying to be thought provoking and entertaining and fun and a lot of the stuff went too far over the top—on the entertaining and fun side, so that it was no longer thought provoking, just inflammatory. And in the process I hurt a bunch of people I care about. And so, I want to apologize now.
When I'm on stage, I'm me. I'm talking talk from me. From me. I'm not representing EA or Maxis.
I want to make two things perfectly clear.
I do not think the Wii is a piece of shit. Nintendo needs to be applauded for trying to interface on the controller front, the user interface front, on making games accessible, on making a console that you don't need to mortgage your house to afford.
Secondly, it's totally obvious—and I'm sorry that I implied otherwise—that everyone at Nintendo is passionate at making great games. Some of the games give me hope that we will be seen as an art form on par with movies and books.
Re: A developer that knows what he is talking about....
I think Kennedy made a valid point: The Wii is bringing in new gamers.
Isn't it a good thing if the video game industry is gaining popularity because of a new, different console? It's good for the business, and heavier competition between the brands make them strive harder to improve.
Who cares which is "better" than the other? Comparing the Wii to the 360/PS3 is like comparing "Apples to Oranges". Bottom line is this: Yes, Sony/Microsoft have more powerful machines, better graphics, etc. But the Wii is gaining a market share with a group that is previously untapped by the other two companies. Young kids and women (I'm generalizing here) aren't as likely to ask their mom/boyfriend/husband for a 360 as they are for a Wii.
This whole damn debate has to stop. Each system has their strengths and weaknesses. One is advertising for the hardcore gamer, while the other is going for the casual fan.
In the end, there are things the Wii does better than the 360/PS3, and vice versa. Now then.....Group hug?
Re: A developer that knows what he is talking about....
Here is the thing that I am bugged with as far as this whole thread and a couple comments in general... And you can call this Griff's rant if you want...
1. Monks is filled with too many fan boys who want to limit themselves and not open up to other avenues... Who cares about what kind of graphics a game can produce... if it is fun it is fun end of story. Perfect example is a recent game I got from Live Arcade... Worms.. Simple but fun. Does it take full advatage of the power of the 360 no... could it be ran on the wii... very easily. The gameplay is just fun and when it comes to gaming... the gameplay is most important.
2. The comment Kennedy made has me torn. He said the Wii is bringing in new gamers and not just trying to accommodate to hardcore gamers. And putting the PS3 and 360 in a category such as this, is ludacris. I applaud what Nintendo is doing by thinking outside of the box and making a cheaper system with new methods of gameplay, but that doesn't mean that the other systems accommodate to just hardcore gamers by following the established formula for success...New games, remakes of classics, and marketing are what brings in new gamers... Not just a console. And to say that wii has brought in more gamers than the other console is unfair to say, because there is no stats to back it up. I know Kennedy is all ready on Wikipedia looking for some kind of # to pull out his ass, but I say to you save it. Wii's marketing is as much to blame for bringing in new people as the games and the system itself.
3. Because it sells more does not make it better... The Mcdonald's cheesburger sells a hell of a lot more burgers than Red Robin's or Fudrucker's but in no way is it better. So you can slam whatever sales #'s that you want down. All it shows is that more people have chosen to buy it, but their reasoning for it may not be there... Is it because they prefer Ninetndo over the others, is it due to the new interaction with remotes? Is it because people own every system that comes out and this was the next on the list? Or is it that it's a cheaper alternative to have something new and hip? No sales number will be able to show you why... And no sales number will tell you that something is better than the other. It is all based on personal perception which is what seems to have happened here...
In closing I would just like to say I feel bad for anyone who counts out a system because it is not "as powerful as the others" or because they are a "fanboy." In the long run it is these people who will be losing out in the long run by alienating yourselves to only what you "know" now and not allowing yourself to give other options a chance...

Re: A developer that knows what he is talking about....
The whole don't limit yourself is a bunch of shit. Trust me I would be much happier if I did limit myself and didn't buy this garbage. Limiting myself is free buying a garbage console and some games for it isn't. Or I would be much happier just saying Shaq Fu is one of the worst games ever made without actually suffering through it and playing it. I still have nightmares because I didn't limit myself in that case :signs139:
Buying the Wii is what made me hate the Wii. Worst console I have ever owned and only one I have ever bought that I regret buying.

Re: A developer that knows what he is talking about....
Once again... it is not the console to guy but the selection of games that you would have had available to you, or your own preference to blame. The console itself is not crap because it does have play value and it is succesful. It may not be as powerful in terms of brute strength as the 360 and PS3 might have, but it does have more strenghs in the areas of innovation and introducing new ways to play new games and the reinvention of classics to the gaming industry.
"I would be much happier just saying Shaq Fu is one of the worst games ever made without actually suffering through it and playing "
This makes me think that you played one or 2 bad games on the console and you have all ready dubbed it terrible. There is much more to come to the console and there will be some great games out and the clear Game of the Year (Twilight Princess) Is all ready out. You can say all you want about my point being "Full of shit" But in the long run it will be you that is missing out which is kind of sad as you seem to be knowledgable to an extent.

Why don't you just sell it then?
I am sure you can probably get you money back for it because Wii's are still sold out where I live.
Put it on ebay.

Re: A developer that knows what he is talking about....
As I've said before the Wii is great for what it is. a cheaper console that is family friendly and is a nice change of pace from the 360/PS3. To call the Wii a piece of shit is kinda dumb, I've only played it here and there but so far I love it. It has enough good games, and the Wii sports is a fucking blast to play with a group of people. You can't honestly sit here and tell me that you think the Wii should be able to graphically match the 360/PS3 when it's 150 dollars then 360 and 350 less than the ps3! The "AI" might not be the best 9though it's fine to me) but honestly the Wii's selling point is interactive! In closing I love the Wii and 360, they both bring different things to table and are both highly enjoyable.
