February 28, 2007 - Sony is claiming that the stacks of unsold PlayStation 3s on store shelves is actually a sign of how well the company is handling supply - not an indication that there is a lack of interest in the new console.
Speaking to Reuters, Jack Tretton, chief executive of Sony Computer Entertainment America, says he is pleased to see so many unsold PS3s sitting on shelves. "It's a testament to the fact that we've been able to manufacture and ship units on a greater pace than any previous console," Tretton said.
While the PS3 is relatively easy to find, the Nintendo Wii remains elusive to consumers. NPD data for January revealed that the Wii outsold the PS3 on an almost two to one ratio.
LMAO, they are trying put a positive spin on things but there's no denying, IMO the PS3 has been a letdown to this point.
Re: Sony spokesman speaks on availibilit of the PS3
This is just typical PR spin.
Sony has shipped 4 million PS3's, but only sold 1.8 million (worldwide). The PS3 is losing even more in Japan, where the Wii is outselling it 4:1.
Also, Sony only reports shipping numbers (wheras Nintendo reports sold numbers), and that Sony counts systems that have just left the factory and those just sitting in warehouses in that shipping number.

The PS3 is much more than an impulse buy though, which the Wii is. The PS3 is a pretty serious investment, with the amount of money that it costs, which is at not at all a bad thing. It's a different market.
Re: Sony spokesman speaks on availibilit of the PS3
The PS3 is under performing, simple as that. Every week the PS3 falls farther and farther in third place, and by the time big games come out it will be too late.
That price is for sure one of the main reasons, and Sony financially can't afford to drop the price anytime soon. Sony banked a lot of money on the PS3 and the Blu-ray format, and it could come back to bite them in the ass.
Re: Sony spokesman speaks on availibilit of the PS3
I don't really think it's under-performing though, at all. The PS3 was a long-term investment for Sony. To expect staggering sales immediately from product priced at $700, is a ridiculous expectation - Sony didn't expect it, I didn't expect it, and neither did any of the analysts trading Sony's stock.
The PS3 is a long-term investment that likely won't pick up steam until Q3 '07 or early '08. All I know is I took a slight risk and bought Sony stock as a long term gain, along with a few shares of Ford.
Re: Sony spokesman speaks on availibilit of the PS3
But will it be too late by the time it picks up steam? The GameCube and Xbox showed that there omes a point where it's too late for anything to make a difference.
I wonder when the PS3 will become profitable for Sony, IIRC Sony didn't make a profit from the PS2 hardware until around 2005. Sony can't financially afford to do that with PS3.
