Woman dies trying to win a Wii for her kids

Woman drinks so much water she dies

POSTED: 10:33 p.m. EST, January 13, 2007

Story Highlights• Woman, 28, dies of water intoxication, assistant coroner says
• Radio contest required drinking large amounts, not voiding
• Victim was trying to win video game console for her children

SACRAMENTO, California (AP) -- A woman who competed in a radio station's contest to see how much water she could drink without going to the bathroom died of water intoxication, the coroner's office said Saturday.

Jennifer Strange, 28, was found dead Friday in her suburban Rancho Cordova home hours after taking part in the "Hold Your Wee for a Wii" contest in which KDND 107.9 promised a Nintendo Wii video game system for the winner.

"She said to one of our supervisors that she was on her way home and her head was hurting her real bad," said Laura Rios, one of Strange's co-workers at Radiological Associates of Sacramento. "She was crying, and that was the last that anyone had heard from her."

It was not immediately known how much water Strange consumed.

A preliminary investigation found evidence "consistent with a water intoxication death," said assistant Coroner Ed Smith.

John Geary, vice president and marketing manager for Entercom Sacramento, the station's owner, said station personnel were stunned when they heard of Strange's death.

"We are awaiting information that will help explain how this tragic event occurred," he said.

Initially, contestants were handed 8-ounce bottles of water to drink every 15 minutes.

"They were small little half-pint bottles, so we thought it was going to be easy," said fellow contestant James Ybarra of Woodland. "They told us if you don't feel like you can do this, don't put your health at risk."

Ybarra said he quit after drinking five bottles. "My bladder couldn't handle it anymore," he added.

After he quit, he said, the remaining contestants, including Strange, were given even bigger bottles to drink.

"I was talking to her and she was a nice lady," Ybarra said. "She was telling me about her family and her three kids and how she was doing it for her kids."

No game system is worth risking your health for.

That's only the second case of death by water intoxication I have ever heard of. I read in a magazine last year of a student pledging that died from drinking too much water

That's actually really sad for a few reasons.

It shows how devoted parents are towards making their kids lives great, but then it also shows how caught up we are as a culture in having the latest and greatest things.

Don't Hold your Pee for a Wii

A Sacramento, California area radio station has fired ten employees, including three DJ's, after a woman died last Friday following an on-air water drinking contest.

28-year old Jennifer Strange died after drinking nearly two gallons of water.
Strange and 17 other contestants were trying to win a Nintendo Wii gaming console by seeing who could drink the most water without going to the bathroom.

The Sacramento Bee newspaper has obtained audio clips from KDND-FM's contest, including Strange saying she was beginning to feel ill.

DJ: "Can't you get water poisoning and like die?"

Dj2: "Your body is 98 percent water why can't you take in as much water as you want? I know."

DJ: "That's what I was thinking, maybe we should have researched this."

DJ2: "Jennifer, congratulations on making it to the final two. How are you feeling?"

Jennifer Strange: "I don't have to go pee, but my stomach is like really, really full. It looks like I’m pregnant again. It's pretty funny."

DJ2: “How much longer do you think you can go Jennifer?"

Jennifer Strange: "As long as my stomach will continue to let me. I don't know maybe a couple more."

DJ2: "Jennifer, I heard you're not doing to well?"

Jennifer Strange: "my head hurts. They keep telling me it's the water. That it will tell my head to hurt and then it will make me puke."

DJ2: “Eva, what do you what to want to say?

Eva: “I want to say, that um, that those people that are drinking all that water, can get sick and possibly die from water intoxication.

DJ2: Yea, we’re aware of this.

DJ3: They signed releases so were not responsible, so it’s ok.

Strange said she was trying to win the game console for her three children.

The initial autopsy indicates Strange died of water intoxication.

Merged...

I have seen Howard Stern do this sort of contest before as well.

I imagine no one will be doing it again due to this.
