So Why Is Wireless So Crap?
My internet is hardwired, but I wanted to connect my Wii up to the net. Since I don't have Windows XP, and so can't use the Nintendo Wi-Fi connector, and the USB Lan adapter won't be released till spring, I went and got myself some wireless things. First I got a USB dongle, but it wasn't too grand, and though the Wii could detect it, it couldn't seem to connect to the internet to it. Today I got a Wireless Access Point, and connected that to my router. Same problem, the Wii finds it, but can't connect to the net through it.
Eventually, using the original dongle, I managed to get the Wii hooked up to the net, and downloaded the first update, only to find that as soon as it was complete, the connection to the net had mysteriously vanished again.
So my question is this: Why does everybody go on about how wonderful wireless is, when it's unsafe, unreliable, and everybody I know who has tried to set up a wireless network has had nothing but trouble?

Do you have it set to only allow so many connections on the router? There may be people on there leaching the wireless and there is no room for your connection. You can restrict the number allowed to connect and see if that helps.
You have to know how to use it properly and once you do, it can be wonderful.

That is soooooooooo true. I have a wireless at my Uni house and it sucks because we didn't know how to set it up properly, since we haven't got it password protected next door could be leaching it. The signal isn’t too strong in my room either (since my room is the farthest away).
However back home with my parents, the wireless is faultless since my dad set it up the proper way.
Have yout tried using the wirelss connection that is used for the Nintendo DS? Its like 40 bucks and connects straight to your usb port. Im leaning towards that as I too dont get all that wireless shit.

It certainly does. I'm just going to have to use this till I can hardwire it. Everytime I want to connect to the shop or whatever, though, I have to go to my network settings on the pc, turn off sharing, turn it back on, and then use the shop. But when the wireless disconnects when I leave the shop, something goes wrong. At that point I have to turn off sharing again. It's gay with a capital fag, I say!

My wireless is fine once i figured out how to set it properly.
And it helps if you try putting the correct password into your DS or PSP as it could take you three days to work it out if your a mug like me.
