I've had my xbox since like Christmas 2006, so quite a while. I've noticed it acting up over the last few months. Little things like it not playing a DVD first time, so I have to eject the disc and put it back in. It usually works 2nd time. Now and again the DVD plays but the colours are all messed up and it acts like its playing it in fast forward... really strange. Also, a few times I've tried to play a game and it has come up with this message:
Please insert this disc into an xbox 360 console.
Like seriously... what? Again it usually works 2nd time, or if I insert another game then try the first one again, but that can't be good, especially with the 360's reputation for being unreliable.
Today was when I thought my xbox really is fucked. I bought FIFA 10 and it simply wouldn't play it. It made me update my console, then when I clicked play game it just went on to the xbox 360 screen as if it didn't recognise the disc. It still plays other games.. so what the hell? I haven't got Live but you don't need Live to play FIFA. No idea what's going on. I'm currently borrowing my brothers console.
No red rings, but is it only a matter of time?

Yeah being the age of your 360, red rings are probably coming your way. As for the other hardware difficulties.. Well Idk if you exactly need live to play the new FIFA game but it may be recommended that you somehow just get it hooked up to xbox live so you can get all the xbox live updates that are due to your console, like the dashboard change as an example.
I've never heard of the xbox's DVD problems, but I do know that with age, Xbox's do have a tendency to screw up when reading disc. Sooner or later, your disc drive won't open anymore on the first try.

From time to time my console will do that. The game will show up as a DVD or something and can't play, but a quick reset will solve that.
Hope no Red Rings won't be coming your way though. You're hella lucky, in all honesty, compared to me and others who have had them several times. I have no idea how my NES---to this day---works just fine but my 360 seems to break every year.

Sounds like some serious hardware problems are going on in your 360. by the sounds of it the red rings of death haven't come up yet but it is only a matter of time before they do, best chance either go to a shop & see what they can do or buy a new one. What i would also recommened for next time is to not play DVD's on the Xbox & install some of the games you play the most onto the Xbox itself that way the discs don't spin as much & your Xbox ins't doing as much work which could help it last a lil longer.

I get read errors on my games occasionally. Usually i jiggle the disk thingo a bit, and then it works.
It refuses to read alot of DVD's though. Of the Starrcade set, it won't play DVD 1 or 3, but it'll play 2. Same thing happened to someone else as well.

I've had the "insert 360 game" message a few times, but its been happening for awhile. Just randomly and not very often. My 360 is of a similar age.
The honest truth is that I figure if it goes, it goes. It would be nice to expect them to last 5-8 years, but 3 years out of it isn't bad when I consider how much play time its had.
