US, September 2, 2009 - In January at Consumer Electronics Show (CES), Sony gave the tech industry a glimpse of the future of their Bravia series HDTVs with a number of prototype 3D-displays. At the time, Sony was reluctant to offer any information about the technology at work or even an estimate of release range, but now it seems the company is ready to start talking seriously about consumer model 3D displays. Presenting at the IFA electronics fair in Berlin this week, Sony announced their plans to bring the first series of 3D-capable Bravia displays by year-end 2010.
As we've seen with the NVIDIA 3D Vision system, the HDTVs will require users to wear active shutter glasses. According to Sony, the PlayStation 3 will be spearheading the company's 3D technology directive and will integrate seamlessly with the new displays. Other supported products are expected to include the company's Vaio series computers and future Blu-ray players.
MCV reports that Sony's Howard Stringer told audiences at IFA that 3DTVs will be in every home by the end of 2010. Additionally, sources have told MCV that Sony has overseen internal production of specialized 3D games for the PlayStation 3 expected to release as the technology gains more widespread implementation.
Unfortunately, tech specifics have not been revealed at this time, however, it seems our original assessment from CES still holds; the new 3D displays are likely to incorporate stereoscopic drivers that are capable of creating a 3D image from any 1080p source connected via HDMI. As for pricing, it seems safe to assume that Sony's new 3D displays will cost upwards of $2,000 or $3,000 initially.
I've barely had my HDTV 2 years and already there is talk of 3DTVs, crazyness.

Hahaha. HDTV's are only in about 30% of US homes. If these are $2,000 and up, they won't be anything but niche for several years. Hell, even with HDTV's being under $500 they are still in less than half of American homes (and I think the rate is low worldwide too). There is also the problem of convincing companies to make the 3D content.
The PS3 will be long gone before this technology even begins to spread (if it becomes popular at all).

They could just make an "upgraded" ps3 to encompass the technology. That's crazy though. I just heard about this shit from my brother yesterday for the first time. Apparently they want to make these tv's to interact with your eyes to create 3D images, without the annoyance of glasses too?! It's just crazy. Do we really need 3D tv?

I can't help but think this is going to cause TV shows to start poking at the camera to be fucking gimmicky as all hell. Mind you, I haven't been to a 3D movie since fucking Sea World nearly fifteen years ago, but still, I'm satisfied with 2D, standard definition television.
Not going to make me go out and buy another expensive fucking TV, Sony, sorry.

I wouldn't really be interested in a 3D television. I don't even have a tv in my room yet and I've been trying to save up for a 30-inch or bigger HD LCD. That's all I want/need, unless of course I got crazy money to spend and got a 60-incher. But a 3D tv? No thank you.

“Sometimes you have to tell your agent that I’m happy here, and you work for me.” - Tim Hudson after signing a new three-year deal with the Braves.
I am really reluctant on this. I know more movies have been 3D lately, but I have not seen them, so I have not had the new experience. If it is anything like in the past, then I really cannot see it doing well. But until I experience it, I will have to hold off my predictions.
