It sounds like the laser has gone bad, I've seen this a few times on the PSx models.
You might go into your local game shop, see if someone local can fix it, as opposed to Sony, if it's out of warranty. If it's IN warranty, can it hurt to check to see how much it'll run you to fix @ Sony?
If you've modded the ps3 at all, don't bother contacting Sony, just have someone local do it. It'll be less hassle, and probably get done faster.

With Sony? Not bloody likely to be only a week, most likely will be longer than that. Sony also charges a ton of money for repairs. Nintendo has always been #1 in terms of customer service.
if its in warranty they dont charge to fix it. ive sent mine in twice. usually only takes a day or two for them to fix it and send it back both times ive had to send mine in.
