June 4, 2009 - In the end, E3 2009 proved to be a lukewarm year for the PC platform, especially when compared to last year. In 2008, Spore was easily one of the most talked about games of the show. This year there wasn't really a PC game that filled the void, though there was a solid lineup of games. We'll give some individual thoughts about what we thought were the most significant games of the show below.
Star Wars: The Old Republic Jason: Wow, this is the very first MMO that I feel can seriously take a bite out of World of Warcraft. It looks and feels like BioWare has made a monstrously huge single-player Star Wars role-playing game, only this one is massively multilplayer. Steve: Yeah, I'm totally with you on this one. I've been excited about BioWare's potential to follow through on their promises and this week's showing was a huge step in the right direction. This could be the MMO that actually makes story important.
Left 4 Dead 2 Jason: What's interesting is how Left 4 Dead 2 has caused such angst and hand wringing amongst Valve's fans. I loved the first game, and this looks to be every bit a better (not to mention bigger) Left 4 Dead experience. Jeff: Honestly, to have the chance to blast zombies running through the streets of my hometown is simply awesome. The first Left 4 Dead was a classic, and this one only seems like it improves on the undead destruction in every way. Bring on the witch in the daylight – I've got an axe with her name on it!
Mass Effect 2 Jason: This is the one game at the show that I want to play right now, as in this very second. BioWare fixed every issue you might have with Mass Effect and then made everything better. I can't even tell you about the awesome sequence that BioWare closed the demo with. It was stunning. Steve: As much as I loved the original Mass Effect, I've been largely immune to the hype surrounding the sequel -- until now. The demo, as Jason said, improved the things I didn't like about the original and closed with a sequence that left me speechless. Jeff: Mass Effect 2 was one of those games that completely made me think about starting up another new game of the original once I get home. With massive improvements, sharper visuals and a darker storyline, I can't wait to find out what happens with Shepard.
Alpha Protocol Steve: Obsidian is too often associated with the sequels they've made to other studios' games, so it's great to see what they're doing with an entirely original property. Better still Alpha Protocol finally proves that roleplaying games don't need to be limited to lances or laser rifles. Jeff: I've been keeping an eye on this game since it was announced, and the way that Obsidian has managed to meld espionage and RPG elements within Alpha Protocol seems incredibly original and well done. This proves the creativity of the genre, and I can't wait to check this one out.
Dragon Age: Origins Jason: It's a BioWare RPG, which alone makes me want it, but Dragon Age still fascinates me with the potential of its story. It sounds like there's going to be an amazing amount of replayability for a single-player RPG. Jeff: I agree with Jason -- the demo that was shown on the floor moved from the complexity of your relationships with your party to the slaughtering of a sorceress that could transform into a dragon. Depth, action and compelling stories are just the tip of the iceberg within this upcoming RPG.
Crysis 2 Jason: Sure, it was only an announcement, but Crysis 2 is huge news for the PC community. Crysis, after all, remains the standard for graphics and sandbox-style shooter gameplay. However, the news that it's multiplatform has me holding my breath. Jeff: The fact that it was only an announcement without any screens, trailer or anything to whet our appetite was a disappointment, but it's a sequel to Crysis. Honestly, that's still going to be an awesome experience by any stretch of the imagination. I just hope I don't need 1.21 gigawatts and a flux capacitor to run the game.
Modern Warfare 2 Jason: Arguably the biggest game at the show, Modern Warfare 2 lived up to expectations. Infinity Ward is among the very best when it comes to delivering cinematic action, and the Modern Warfare 2 demo drew oohs and ahs aplenty. Steve: I'm still torn about this one. It's undeniably beautiful and the action is just breathtaking but it seems like the sequel is moving into some James Bond territory. I'm sure that the game will deliver but now I'm wondering just what to expect.
Monkey Island Returns Steve: It's about time! Monkey Island has long been at the top of the remake wishlist and this year saw the announcement of two titles that resurrect the franchise. The Secret of Monkey Island brings back the classis game and Telltale's Tales of Monkey Island carries it into new territory. We're hoping to see more LucasArts remakes if this one does well. Jeff: It's been way too long for a return to Monkey Island, and suddenly at this E3, we get two?!?! This is amazing news for adventure fans, and I can't wait to check it out. Now if Roger Wilco and Gabriel Knight games are announced at GamesCon, older gamers can die happy.
Alan Wake Jason: This was one of the most talked about games of the show. After years of being absent from E3, Remedy showed off an incredibly atmospheric action horror game. Steve: Alan Wake had just about exhausted my capacity for maintaining enthusiasm but the showing this week has rejuvenated my hope. The story elements seem to really bring something new to the table.

I'm kind of disappointed that KOTOR is an MMO. I would have liked it to be like the originals. Could be awesome though, can't wait to see some video on it.
June 4, 2009 - The show's over. Done. Kaput. I know this because I've run out of games to write about and people to interview. The IGN news room is littered with empty soda cans, half eaten donuts and crumpled bags of chips and pretzels. It's disgusting -- nearly, but not quite as bad as the aromatically offensive sweat stains that flank the T-shirt perimeter of our own Mark Bozon's armpits. But these are all signs of editorial dedication. Sleepless nights. Destructive diets. The writing teams take on zombie-like appearances -- bloodshot eyes from staring uninterrupted at game demos; painful shambling movements because of intense constipation -- it comes with the territory, baby. Except for me, that is, because unlike executive editor Craig Harris, who earlier today plucked a piece of Nintendo swag out of the innocent hands of a seven year-old (infected with the Ebola virus, the poor kid!), I've kept my dignity.
Now that another E3 has come and gone, my bosses tell me that it's time to take a look backward at the events that transpired during this year's show and provide readers like you my insightful analyses. So, uh, I'll try to do that.
Seriously, though, how was Nintendo's E3 2009? Was it as carelessly casual as last year or did the company come to Los Angeles with a plan to redeem itself in the eyes of the hardcore user base? As I sit here writing this, I'm not entirely sure I have the answer because I don't think either description is entirely accurate of the Big N's presence this year. To me, it met pre-show expectations, and yet it didn't dazzle attendees, which might the problem, if there actually is a problem. After last year's disappointing display, I almost feel like it needed to overcompensate this year just to make amends. And simultaneously, I'm satisfied... enough.

Not that I'm trying to dismiss Nintendo's pre-show Media Briefing because the event, held at Club Nokia, housed a number of exciting announcements and game demos. Super Mario Bros. Wii, a console-ized version of the platformer of the same name for DS. It's got the same 2D style but features a robust four-player cooperative and competitive mode. Super Mario Galaxy 2, which looks fabulous, promises more complex puzzles and other new play mechanics when it hits Wii next year. And Metroid: Other M -- well, that sucker came out of nowhere and blew me away. My only disappointment is that most of these newly announced titles, New Mario Bros. Wii aside, weren't playable. The good news is that third-parties made up in that regard, showing off fully interactive versions of highly polished software including Red Steel 2, Silent Hill: Shattered Memories and The Grinder, among others.
And, by the way, Shigeru Miyamoto did talk up the new Legend of Zelda for Wii, even showing off an enticing new piece of artwork that depicted Link as a full adult (more aged than he was in Twilight Princess) and sans a sword. I don't know what that means just yet, but it definitely means something because Nintendo's master designer made a point of it when I interviewed him.
Now that it's all finished, the general consensus around the E3 show floor seems to be that Microsoft and Sony outperformed Nintendo. Maybe that's true. Both companies had pretty good showings. But it's hard to complain too much when the Big N pulled out two new Mario games, a surprise Metroid co-developed by Team Ninja, and even hyped up the next Zelda.
The IGN Nintendo Team spent three days combing the Los Angeles Convention Center's halls in search of the very best Wii and DS titles we could find. We present the cream of the crop to you on the next page, in no particular order.
<b><big>Red Steel 2</big></b>
Ubisoft didn't show a lot of the game at their press conference, but we have a full video of the entire demo and it's worth checking out. The game is a hell of a lot of fun and while the sword isn't true 1:1 it's pretty close and makes for some seriously wicked gameplay.
<b><big>The Grinder</big></b>
Since The Conduit comes out in a couple weeks and we already gave it props last year, we've got to hive a shout out for High Voltage Software's other first person shooter, The Grinder. Vampires, werewolves, zombies, and the closest thing to a Left 4 Dead experience you're likely to get on the Wii.
<b><big>The Legend of Zelda: Spirit Tracks</big></b>
Phantom Hourglass was a great Nintendo DS title and Spirit Tracks continues in the same vein. Hell, even riding in the train was fun, and trains are never, ever fun. The dungeon puzzle solving levels with the Phantom are a blast and the game has the same slick style as before.
<b><big>Scribblenauts</big></b>
Scribblenauts may be the coolest DS title ever. We've never seen so many IGN editors this excited over a DS game, and the sheer volume of words in this game make for endless possibilities. We kept trying to stump it, and instead the game consistently surprised us by totally delivering.
<b><big>New Super Mario Bros. Wii</big></b>
The concept is simple -- multiplayer Mario Bros. -- but the execution is fantastic. Mario Bros. Wii is fast paced and energetic. The design is simple so anyone who has ever played a Mario game can jump in. And it has that ability to make you want to punch your best friend in the face that only Smash Bros. was able to provide until now.
<b><big>Dead Space: Extraction</big></b>
Absolutely stunning. People hear the term "on-rails shooter" and they turn shift their hype trains into low gear, but that's just a bad idea in this case -- Dead Space looks amazing and plays even better.
<b><big>Wii Sports Resort</big></b>
Archery. Canoeing. Hitting Miis in the face with foam swords and making them fall into the drink. There's nothing you can't do with Wii Sports Resort and its Wii MotionPlus compatibility, and it continually impressed everyone who got their hands on it here at the show. (And they were giving away free Frisbees there, too. Bonus.)
<b><big>Silent Hill: Shattered Memories</big></b>
The Wii has suddenly become the new home for horror games, and perhaps no game is representing this trend better than Capcom's upcoming revival of the Silent Hill series. Creepy, atmospheric and technically impressive (with its incredible lighting), Silent Hill is sure to impress when it arrives later this year.
<b><big>Muramasa: The Demon Blade</big></b>
2D art in video games is reaching a new pinnacle with Ignition Entertainment's Muramasa: The Demon Blade. You flip out, you slice and dice, and you're constantly astonished by the quality of both the character animation and background art as you do it.
<b><big>Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles: The Crystal Bearers</big></b>
In development for ages and finally revealed in playable form this year, The Crystal Bearers is shaping up to be an unmatched adventure on Wii from Square Enix. You fly through the clouds, ride Chocobos, move people, enemies and objects with the telekinetic power of your ingrained crystal and more.
Honorable Mentions for Unplayables
Don't flip out because we didn't include some of your top picks -- we only chose to recognize playable games here. But you can bet we're just as hyped as you for the Wii projects we'll be playing in 2010 and beyond, including Super Mario Galaxy 2, Metroid: Other M and the next installment in the Legend of Zelda series. Here's hoping we'll go hands-on with each next year -- that would be an incredible E3 indeed.

June 4, 2009 - E3 2009 was a great show all around, and Sony came out with its guns blazing. The announcement of the PSP go may have been lessened due to the news leaking early, but that doesn't mean that Sony didn't have a ton of stuff to announce and show at its conference and on the show floor.
The announcement of Final Fantasy XIV was a surprise to everyone in attendance, and the official unveiling of Gran Turismo 5 was a great treat for racing fans. The Last Guardian, Team ICO's latest, was also big news, and the first major public showings of God of War III and Uncharted 2: Among Thieves wowed show attendees. Oh, and don't forget about the Motion Controller demo...
But what were the most talked about games at the show for Sony's systems? Based on the conversations going on in the IGN War Room (the place where we stay up writing until 2am every day of the show), here are the most talked about PlayStation games at E3 2009 (listed in alphabetical order).
<b><big>Final Fantasy XIV Online</big></b>
As mentioned, this was a big surprise to everyone. Despite very little details on the game coming out of the show, the fact that it was announced before FF XIII has even shipped (not to mention Versus) was a shock to most people. Plus, it's Final Fantasy, so, you know...
<b><big>God of War III</big></b>
The return of Kratos will always be a big deal, but the fact that it's both his first appearance on the PlayStation 3 and the finale to what will likely be a fantastic trilogy (the first two are already classics) makes this one of the most anticipated titles at the show on any system. And who could resist talking about eviscerated intestines?
<b><big>Gran Turismo 5</big></b>
With close to 50 million units shipped, the Gran Turismo franchise is a big deal, even outside of gaming. The fifth full title has been in production for a long, long time now, so the fact that we finally got to see the game in action was a great thing. The fact that the amazing footage was all realtime made it even more talked about.
<b><big>Gran Turismo PSP</big></b>
Like GT5, Gran Turismo PSP was first mentioned when the PSP was fully unveiled way back in May of 2004. More than five years later, it finally made a reappearance. That fact right there is good enough to garner some chatter, but it also helps that the game looks to be a very good take on the console franchise.
<b><big>Half-Minute Hero</big></b>
With the big three all over E3, it can be hard for a smaller publisher to make an impact. XSEED brought the thunder, and it's called Half-Minute Hero. Here, you're an 8-bit hero and have 30 seconds to complete most quests. The battles move at light speed, you'll need to grind in record time, and the whole thing is pretty refreshing. We want -- NOW!
<b><big>Heavy Rain</big></b>
Heavy Rain had impressed us at a couple previous events already, and its unique gameplay, realistic visuals and dark themes already made it something to talk about. Its risqué showing at a breakout session this year though made it the talk of the War Room for a good bit during the show.
<b><big>The Last Guardian</big></b>
The official unveiling of Team ICO's third game would be a huge deal at any time, so it should come as no surprise that it made our list. The game's unique lead creature is of especially interesting design, as is the game's plot, timeline and possible tie-in with Team ICO's other work. We're excited, and apparently everyone else is too.
<b><big>LittleBigPlanet PSP</big></b>
Pretty much everyone with a pulse loved LittleBigPlanet when it hit the PlayStation 3, so being that the game has seemingly made a great move to the PSP is both relieving and good news. Stories about how well the transition works wound up makings the rounds in the room.
<b><big>Modern Warfare 2</big></b>
The original Modern Warfare (then preceded by the Call of Duty name) was a massive success in terms of both reception and sales. So it was no surprise that everyone would talk about what we'd see from the sequel, especially with its cryptic teaser trailers hitting before the show. And then when it looked to play like a Bond movie, we couldn't stop talking.
<b><big>Uncharted 2: Among Thieves</big></b>
Sony opened its press conference with a bang by showing the first public display of Uncharted 2's single-player gameplay, and oh boy did it impress everyone in attendance. We can't stop talking about how amazing the conference demo was, and then Naughty Dog gave us more at the booth. Wow.

June 4, 2009 - E3 2009 has closed its doors, leaving the entire IGN staff both exhausted and excited about all of the awesome games coming this year and next. This was an E3 for the ages no matter which console or PC you do your gaming on. If you're an Xbox 360 fan, you now have many, many thing to look forward to.
It kicked off with the Microsoft Press Conference where we got more announcements in a couple hours than we usually do in an entire year. We got looks at games that we feared would never see the light of day. The fabled motion camera made an appearance. Two entire Beatles showed up. Konami and Kojima finally announced a Metal Gear game for Xbox 360 in Metal Gear Solid: Rising. Halo 3: Reach got announced. Facebook and Twitter are coming to Xbox live. If you haven't watched the press conference yet, do yourself a favor and do it now.
And now on to the top 10 games we were talking about the most at this year's E3 in no particular order, complete with handy comments on what we think of them.
<b><big>Mass Effect 2</big></b> Erik: BioWare showed that everyone should expect Mass Effect 2 to be better than its predecessor in every possible way. It has streamlined combat, a silky smooth graphics engine, and cinematic storytelling that is simply stunning. This game has my fullest attention.
Charles: I could not stop playing the first Mass Effect once I started until I saw nearly the entire game world, so the sequel is pretty much a lock for me. Looks like it's got improved visuals, a combat system more tuned for action, and maintains the strong presentation values from the first. One of my most anticipated games.
<b><big>Halo 3: ODST</big></b> Charles: More Halo? Ok, I'm on board. It'll be interesting to see what playing as an ODST will be like, as well as how the story stacks up since it's broken up into several sections that focus on different characters. I'm really looking forward to the new Firefight mode, which seems a bit like Horde in Gears 2.
Erik: When Firefight was first announced, I wasn't too interested. It seemed like another Horde mode knock-off. Then I played it and realized it is totally awesome. The campaign is looking to be the most interesting Halo adventure yet.
<b><big>Assassin's Creed 2</big></b> Hilary: Though I loved the setting for the original, I have to say that I'm far more excited to be playing an assassin living during the Italian Renaissance. And Ubisoft Montreal wisely removed the investigation missions, which didn't work well in the original.
Charles: Really, really impressive E3 2009 showing. Ubisoft is throwing what must be a ridiculous amount of money and a huge staff at making this game work, and it seems like complaints about the first title were heard by the developer. I hope the gameplay matches up with the incredible presentation. Also, you can fly.
<b><big>Forza Motorsport 3</big></b> Hilary: It wasn't much of a surprise when Forza 3 was announced, but I was still shocked at the amount of content Turn 10 is putting into the game. And, of course, it controls perfectly and looks fantastic.
Erik: Forza 2's main problem was that it just felt a little bland on the race track. This go around it looks like Turn 10 is taking steps to address that. I'm going to keep my eyes on Forza 3 solely because I'm so interested to see what Turn 10 is going to do with user generated content and custom paint options.
<b><big>Shadow Complex</big></b> Erik: Of every Xbox Live Arcade game on the horizon, this is easily the coolest. The game design is classic Super Metroid, but the visuals are 3D and beautiful. Nothing of this size or scope has been attempted yet on the Live Arcade.
Charles: It's been a long while since I've tried out a game in the vein of Metroid or Castlevania Symphony of the Night, so I'm really looking forward to this. Hopefully it'll spark a little bit of nostalgia and provide for some cool new experiences too.
<b><big>Splinter Cell Conviction</big></b> Hilary: When last I saw Conviction it was, well, not a game I was looking forward to playing. Two years later, Ubisoft has redefined its franchise. The Mark and Execute gameplay and stylish presentation make this one of my favorites of the show.
Charles: After Double Agent I really stopped caring about Sam Fisher...at least until I saw the recent footage and demo for Conviction. Sure it may not have the same focus on stealth the series is known for, but the fact that it basically looks like what a 24 game should be has me interested.
<b><big>DJ Hero</big></b> Erik: This one is a bit of a curiosity to me at this point. The game looks pretty cool, but I can't really decide whether I want it or not until I get my hands on that turntable. I'm pretty burnt out on music games but if this one turns out to be a blast I'll head back into the streaming note charts once more.
Charles: I saw this one being played over at Activision's booth, and I can't say I knew exactly what was going on. I'm not much into turntables or anything like that, but I'd be curious to eventually give this one a go. At least it's something different.
<b><big>Project Natal</big></b> Erik: Having your Xbox 360 recognize you and automatically sign you in? Awesome. Having to wave your arms to move through menus? Not awesome. Some things are better done with a controller. In the hands of some clever game designers, this has the potential to be game changing. In the wrong hands, it has the potential to drive me insane.
Charles: One of Microsoft's biggest surprises was it's motion control camera, which according to some people in the office who had some hands-on time actually works pretty well. I admit I'm interested -- the notion of being able to sign into my gamer profile and browse the dashboard without a controller in hand seems pretty convenient, though I doubt I'll be doing any aerobic-type of controller-free exercise programs. I'm going to choose to remain cautious and skeptical for now. And Milo is creepy.
<b><big>Alan Wake</big></b> Hilary: Remedy has kept Alan Wake under wraps for a good long time, but it's unveiling couldn't have gone any better. Wake was better than I'd expected, with intense gameplay and a cool Stephen King inspired storyline. I can't wait for more!
Charles: It was so nice to finally see the curtain get pulled back on this game. I was really surprised to see how action-focused it was – I guess I expected something with a slower pace and more adventure elements. But maybe that's a silly way to think about a game coming from the guys who made Max Payne. This one's right near the top of my list for anticipated games.
