The full roster of fighters has been unveiled for the highly anticipated upcoming release of "UFC 2009 Undisputed."

The game, available on Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3, is slated for a May release.

More than 80 fighters will appear in the debut version of "UFC Undisputed," which is part of a multi-year deal between the UFC and game developer THQ.

The highly anticipated title will be the most realistic MMA video game ever developed, according to THQ.

A few surprises can be found in the divisional breakdowns. A number of fighters in the game, for example, have since signed with other organizations, including Andrei Arlovski, Tito Ortiz, Mirko "Cro Cop" Filipovic and Tim Sylvia. Others, such as Josh Burkman and Matt Arroyo, were recently dropped from the organization but still appear in the game.

Additionally, a few notables are noticeably absent, including Randy Couture, Dustin Hazelett, Matt Hamill, Josh Neer and Jeremy Stephens. And some recent additions to the UFC roster aren't in the game, including Shane Carwin, Denis Kang, Akihiro Gono and Caol Uno.

As we previously reported, former UFC light heavyweight champion Forrest Griffin is featured on the cover of the U.S. version of the game, and UFC welterweight title-holder Georges St. Pierre graces the Canadian version.

The full list of fighters, courtesy of GameSpot.com, can be found below (fighters who can compete in multiple weight classes are designated):

Q&A:

At what point will a ref call a fight? Do you get those satisfying 2-3 quick strikes on a helpless victim before the ref tackles you off?

Much like in real life, the ref will call a fight when a fighter has been knocked out or is otherwise unable to defend himself. And yes, there will be times when you will be able to land a few additional strikes on an opponent that has just been out on the ground or as he's about to hit the floor.

Dodging, bobbing weaving, counters? How do you mitigate damage in UFC 2009: Undisputed?

There are several ways todefend against strikes, each with its own advantages and disadvantages. Blocking a strike mitigates a percentage of damage based on several factors such as the attacker’s striking power and the defender’s defense rating (among others). Itis possible for a blocked attack to do no damage at all, or, conversely, to be almost as damaging as a clean strike based on the situation.

Countering nullifies a strike completely, but is more difficult to pull off than simply blocking. The payoff for successfully countering a strike, however, is huge! Not only does it completely negate an attack but it almost always places the defender in an advantageous position. Some fighters even have unique counters specific to them.

Finally a fighter can avoid astrike altogether by dodging. Fighters can dodge and sway by quickly steppingto the side or back to avoid strikes and setup opportunities for their own offense. Some attacks have dodging or swaying built in, such as a boxer’s ducking hook or BJ Penn’s signature jabs. Being able to quickly move in and outof an opponent’s strike range while avoiding attacks is a technique that is important to learn and will take some time to master.

Can you slam people a la Rampage or Matt Hughes? Can you pull off shoulder hoists ordevastating slams?

Definitely! Wrestling has a full array of slams that can be performed from various positions and some fighters, such as Matt Hughes, have signature slams available only to them. If you've seen the most recent Jardine vs. Jackson gameplay fight preview, there's a visual example of what some slams in Undisputed will look like.

What is the heads up display? Is it going to be health bar and all kindsa things or is it going to be streamlined and more subtle?

By default, UFC 2009 Undisputed has no heads up display (HUD) of any kind on the screen. We really wanted to capture the essence of a real UFC fight, and part of that was to make sure that the player was focused on the action inside the Octagon. Players do, however, have the option of enabling a Stamina/Energy meter if they so choose. Even then, the focus will still rest on your player and his opponent.

Are knockouts preanimated or are they controlled by the engine?

Knockouts are a mix of animation and physics simulation. This approach allows for a variety of interesting knockouts to occur based on where the opponent was struck, what position he was in while struck and the force of the blow landed.

Are we gonna see brutal hammerfists?

Of course! Hammerfists, elbows, punches and any other attacks that fighters in the UFC levy during ground and pound are faithfully recreated in all their brutal glory! Depending on how your ground and pound goes, you might see some messy results if you land enough hits.

Any way to get out of a rear naked choke? Or is it good game once they start the submission?

All submissions are escapable up to a point. The player will have to time any escape from an arm bar, rear naked choke, etc. as the opponent's move is being executed. Once a sumbission has been fully locked in, however, it is all over - especially with the rear naked choke.

How is training going to work?
Like many traditional fighting games, UFC 2009 Undisputed contains a few different ways to train players in the intricacies of the combat system while keeping their skills polished. Tutorial Mode walks the player through every aspect of the combat system, from strikes and submissions to counters and transitions. The interactive tutorial ensures that upon completion, players are fully trained and prepared for their first fight.

Practice Mode allows players to hone their skills against an artificial oppoenent while displaying important information such as damage of attacks and the location of impact. The practice opponent can be customized to facilitate the type of practice or training experience the player requires. It can be set to simply stand in place and absorb blows, which is great for practicing combos. It can be fully AI or player controlled, replicating the type of experience a player would encounter in an actual fight without the fear of getting knocked out or running out of time. It can also be a mix of both, having particular behaviors assigned based on the intent of the player (such as always try to counter, always try to block the first strike, or always attempt to grapple).

Players who want to practice a very specific facet of the game have the option of instantly placing both fighters into any position or range of their choosing. This eliminates the need to continually have to take down a fighter and pass his guard if the intent is to simply practice locking in a kimura from Side Control, or to practice the timing required to escape from a Muay Thai Clinch.

Explain create a fighter. What can you customize? How about cauliflower ear?
UFC 2009 Undisputed’s Create-a-Fighter allows players to create fighters from scratch that can be used in single player or multiplayer modes. The areas of customization are endless, allowing players to modify everything from hair color and facial structure, to scars and tattoos. And yes, even the level of ear damage can be customized (per ear). In addition, players will also be able to customize their fight gear, Attributes, Fighting Techniques and Fighting Skills. We’ll be sharing more information about these levels of customization in the near future.

Will there be a demo?
We put this answer into the Q&A earlier this week, but for those who didn't see it yet:

Yes, UFC 2009 Undisputed will have a a downloadable, pre-launch demo for UFC 2009 Undisputed on both the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 consoles. More details on the demo's official release date will be released in the near future.

Any unlockables that we can get?
While I can’t reveal specifics, yes, we do provide unlockable content.

Any sharing created fighters with friends?
While you can utilize your CAF generated fighters to compete with your friends, we do not currently support sharing your CAF fighters.

Trophies and achievements for PS3/Xbox 360?
Definitely!

Combat

Flying arm bars in the game?
Yep!

How many ways can a fight be stopped? After a serious punishment, can you just collapse from a light punch?
Fights can be ended through knockouts, by tapping out due to submission or by TKO through an accumulation of damage. Much like a real UFC bout, any time a fighter is unable to defend himself, the fight will be stopped.

Only strikes of a certain power level can cause a knockout. For instance, a jab, no matter how cleanly landed, is generally not enough to knock out an opponent, but it definitely contributes to the cumulative damage that a fighter is able ot absorb and can set up a hook or head kick to end the fight in a brutal fashion.

Will there be special fighting styles for specific fighters, Silva?
Not complete fighting styles per se, but specific fighters will definitely have supplemental strikes, submissions, slams, transitions or counters that are unique to them. Anderson Silva, for example, has the unique ability to catch a punch and immediately pull an opponent into his Muay Thai clinch!

What is the maximum HD output resolution?
The maximum HD output resolution for UFC 2009 Undisputed is 1080p on both Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3.

How many submissions will there be?

We have all the traditional submissions that players would find in the UFC, including arm bars, guillotine chokes, kimuras, rear naked chokes, triangle chokes and even some exotic moves like the knee bar and north/south choke. The really interesting aspect of the submission system, however, is the number of varied positions from which players can attempt to lock in a submission. The arm bar, for instance, is traditionally attempted from the Mount or Guard Positions, and we make sure to include those in the game. In UFC 2009 Undisputed, some fighters also have the ability to perform a flying arm bar from a Single Collar Tie.

Can you perform illegal moves like a knee to the groin or head butt?
In UFC 2009 Undisputed, we do not support fouls or illegal tactics. Due to the physics-based combat of the game, we felt it might be frustrating for players to land an accidental low blow or illegal strike and be penalized for it. As far as intentional fouls are concerned, the UFC is full of very sportsmanlike fighters, and intentional fouling has never really become a major strategy like it has in say, boxing. It simply isn’t something that we felt was appropriate for our game or the UFC as a license.

How does the judging system work? Can you give us some examples of what things score you points?
For UFC 2009 Undisputed, we use the same 10-point must system that the UFC uses to judge their fights. Fights are scored as in real life by effective striking, grappling and Octagon control. Landing strikes, performing takedowns and transitions or attempting submissions all award points to players. Stuffing takedowns, countering transitions and escaping from ground positions back to your feet also awards points. As with real life, however, there is that X-factor that comes into play when a fight is being judged – what is a particular judge looking for? One judge may place more emphasis on striking, while another places emphasis on grappling. While the preference of the judge when scoring is small, sometimes a match is so close that even the smallest detail can sway the fight.

How will the fatigue system ensure realistic tactical fights?
Just as in real MMA fights, pacing yourself in UFC 2009 Undisputed is important. If you are gassed, you will be less effective in striking, grappling or defending yourself. Players who come out throwing caution to the wind with a flurry of attacks will visibly notice their fighter’s movement slowing, which in-turn decreases reaction time. Picking your shots is something that players will have to pick up on if they want to perform well in later rounds.

Around the office, we’ve noticed that newcomers who pick up the game tend to get overzealous and gas early, leaving themselves open to being knocked out. However, when we play against each other, often times there is a lot of “feeling out” going on and we end up making it into the later rounds.

Will the cuts, bruises, and welts inflicted upon the fighters become more severe or bigger as the fight goes on?
Focusing on specific parts of an opponent’s body will definitely add to the level of visible damage. Cuts will open and begin to bleed more if struck repeatedly while bruising becomes darker and more pronounced as more strikes are landed.

Is there a limit on how many created fighters will be allowed?
You can have up to 100 created fighters at any one time, so there is plenty of room to fill out your stable of fighters.

Is the demo the final version of the game, or are you guys going to tweak some things before May 19th?

We definitely had some time in between the demo and final game to fix
some small issues here and there, but the gameplay in the demo is
fairly indicative of the final product.

Can you "deadleg" an opponent with enough inside/outside leg kicks?

Repeated strikes to an opponent’s legs will cause him to move more slowly and lower the damage that he can inflict via kicks. You can’t completely disable an opponent’s legs, but working him with inside/outside leg kicks is a valid strategy and definitely has a tangible effect that can turn the tide of a fight.

Can you go into detail on how rising or dropping a weight class will affect a fighter's attributes, such as cardio strength?

For the sake of being as accurate as possible, fighters who are allowed to rise or drop weight classes each carry their weight a little differently. Moving up in weight may cause one fighter to lose some speed and pop on his punches, while a fighter in his own weight class may not be as shaky when moving down.

How did you arrive at 7 years being the CAF career length?

Due to the way that our Career Mode and Create-a-Fighter progression work, a seven-year period for a Career Mode playthrough allows a proficient player ample time to build a very competitive fighter and also felt perfect to us from a playtime standpoint. We expect players will want to experience the Career Mode multiple times, so we tried to ensure that each playthrough was long enough to be enjoyable and indicative of an actual UFC career, as well as compact enough as to not drag on to the point of frustration. It is also worth pointing out that you can retire a fighter at any time from a Career Mode playthrough. If for some reason you do not want to complete an entire Career Mode, you have the option of ending it at any point without losing the progress made on your created fighter.

Is there an online CAF matchmaking system? Will I be able to choose search criteria of win/loss record, total fights, attribute total, or other variables? I would like to be able to take my CAF online as he is moving up through the ranks rather than the typical fighting game in which all online CAFs have maximum attributes.

Created fighters are supported in online Ranked or Unranked play and are identical to their offline counterparts, possessing all of the same skills and attributes. While fighters created through the Create-a-Fighter system share the same total number of points that can be allocated to their Attributes or Fighter Skills, fighters who are brought up through the Career Mode have the potential to be even more well-rounded. If you are serious about taking a created fighter online, it is definitely in your best interest to train him properly using the Career Mode! This should ensure that much like the real UFC fighters present in the game, each created opponent will have different strengths, weaknesses and play style.

Can you explain the submission system in detail? Are submissions going to be easier to achieve with other fighters than on the demo?

I’m so glad someone has asked this question! I’ve seen more than a few people misunderstand our submission system, so here’s the scoop.

Submissions pit two people against each other in a struggle that takes into account many factors. First, the offensive fighter’s submission skill and the type of submission being performed are considered. The higher a fighter’s Submission Offense and the more advantageous the position from which the submission is attempted, the higher the likelihood the submission will succeed. That’s why some people have noticed in our demo that Mauricio “Shogun” Rua’s triangle submission from mount is easier than other submissions, like the knee bar from guard or the kimura from half guard. Also, the method the offensive fighter uses to sink in the submission plays an important part. There are two ways to execute a submission – mashing the face buttons or rotating the right stick, a maneuver we call The Shine. In all cases, The Shine is going to be a better method to sink in a submission. Make sure you rotate that stick fast! The faster you rotate the stick, the higher your chance of success.

It’s the defensive side and how players deal with submissions that I think confuses a lot of people. Similarly to the offensive fighter, a defensive fighter has stats that influence how successful he is at getting out of submissions. But in the defensive fighter’s case, they have two different stats – Strength and Submission Defense – and which state is used depends on which type of escape is performed. Brute force escapes, which are performed by rapidly mashing the face buttons, only take into account Strength. The other type of submission escape, Technical Escapes, which are also executed via The Shine, only look at a defensive fighter’s Submission Defense. As a defender, your best bet is to know which of these two stats is higher and to utilize the escape suited to that higher stat.

There is another extremely important factor in the success rate of a submission, and that is the defender’s energy level. I have seen many people incorrectly assert that the best way to execute a submission is to weaken your opponent by beating him up. This is simply not true! Energy is not lowered by hurting your opponent; stamina is the answer. Energy is only depleted when your opponent performs actions; running, striking, transitions, etc. all temporarily lower energy levels, and the lower your opponent’s energy level, the more vulnerable he is to submissions. We didn’t want fighters coming out and submitting people instantly, simply because they have a higher Submission Offense. We feel this would be very frustrating for players (and yes, there are fighters in the game with higher Submission Offense than Shogun and lower Submission Defense than Chuck Liddell, so there will be matchups where submissions are a bit easier than others). For example, Brock Lesnar has extremely high Strength and Standing Striking Offense, but even he can’t just one-punch KO everyone in the game at will. It just wouldn’t be fun, and we just don’t think it’d be fun with submissions, either.

My suggestion would be for submission fighters to pay close attention to what actions their opponents are performing to see when a submission opportunity presents itself. If you land a takedown and your opponent immediately starts spamming transition attempts or has just delivered a flurry of strikes and left himself gassed, this means he’s using up a lot of energy and thus will be vulnerable to a submission. However, if the opponent is playing a calmer strategy and is perhaps only attempting to protect himself while throwing carefully timed strikes, submitting isn’t going to be a very viable option.

I'm really surprised about Couture...maybe they are having licensing issues with him or something?

No Hamill = no one cares Shaun.

I think the fighters were all set out when Couture and UFC weren't on good terms, which would explain his absence.

No it wouldn't, Bader and Ef-fail came in to the UFC after Couture returned no?

The real issue would be with EA's contract with Couture (where he appeared in CnC3:Red Alert) likely kept him out of the game because it was made by THQ.

Well I suppose, but why would he be under contract with EA for one game?

Re: Official UFC Undisputed Thread

Hopefully I can fight Dmac...our connections hate each other.

I'm interested to see how they rate the fighters, or if there are any ratings for people...like the SvR games.

Oh yeah, I sticked it and made it the official thread for the game.
