Munich Remembered

February 6th 1958, a plance carrying the Manchester United team home from an away European tie in Belgrade, along with supporters and journalists crashed at Munich Airport. 23 passengers, including 8 Manchester United players, died.

The United team, known as the Busby Babes, was considered potential European Champions that season and many considered them the potential to be the greatest club team of all time, expecting to win many trophies.

What would have happened if that plane didn't crash?

Would United now have a European record to compete with Real Madrid, A.C Milan and Liverpool(The team would take another ten years to win the European Cup)?

How truly great would the England 1966 World Cup squad have been?

Would England have won more international trophies?

Would we have seen the emergance of George Best in a Utd shirt?

Would the English game be the same today?

Should we have a minuites silence at the Machester derby on Sunday or should they go for a minuites applause?

Re: Munich Remembered

What would have happened if that plane didn't crash?

They would have likely gone on to continue their rampany success at domestic level. Real Madrid were some team back then, so it's not particularly cast in stone that they would have added European glory much sooner than they did (in 1968). Albeit the Madrid team was generally much older.

Would United now have a European record to compete with Real Madrid, A.C Milan and Liverpool(The team would take another ten years to win the European Cup)?

See above, no guarantee. I think they would have won it once or twice at least, but I don't agree with people who take this for granted.

How truly great would the England 1966 World Cup squad have been?

Well they won the World Cup, so they couldn't have done much better! We would have likely fared a bit better in the 1958 World Cup, maybe made the Semis? Unlikely 1962 World Cup would have been much better given how bad European teams have been in South American tournaments, and given how incredibly good the Brazilian team that put us out in '62 were.

Would England have won more international trophies?

Maybe fared better in 1964 European Championships, 1958 World Cup.....I don't think we would have actually won any more international trophies though.

Would we have seen the emergance of George Best in a Utd shirt?

Greatness always rises to the top. Not everybody in that United team was 20/21, so Best (who was a football genius) would have worked his way through regardless.

Would the English game be the same today?

I don't really see why it wouldn't be.

Should we have a minuites silence at the Machester derby on Sunday or should they go for a minuites applause?

The minutes applause is just a cop out to pander to the idiot minority that can't show any respect, even for just a minute, and want to get some attention. Keep the revered "silence" and don't even bother shouting at the idiots that try and spoil it. Wait the whole minute and then kick them in the 'nads, thus depriving them of (a) the attention they crave and (b) a testicle.
