Huh Two More Assistant Referees?

Quote:
UEFA are backing a change to football's rules to allow two extra assistant referees in the penalty area at free-kicks and corners.

The idea, put forward by UEFA president Michel Platini, is to be trialled at youth tournaments as an alternative to goalline technology.

The experiment will include using the assistants both behind the goal-line and inside the penalty box as extra eyes and ears for the referee.

William Gaillard, UEFA's communications director and Platini's special adviser, said: "Michel Platini has put forward a suggestion to have two extra assistant referees - one at each end.

"Some people say it is better for them to stay behind the goal, others that it is better inside the penalty area so that things that go on like pulling and pushing are properly sanctioned.

"They would be just like the linesmen talking through radio system to the referee, who would then take a decision.

"We have the go-ahead from the International FA Board to conduct trials on this and we believe it could work - the game is a lot faster than it used to be and in some instances assistant referees are physically unable to keep up with play all the time."
Is they any needs for more officals in a football match?

Not inside the penalty area during free kicks, how dumb is that, why can't they just leave it alone and implement the goal line technology.

Re: Two More Assistant Referees?

I think it would work, there are many sports who implement a team of officials on the filed and they work succesfully. I say Mr Platini should give this a trial run in the youth tournaments, and see it if works.

Re: Two More Assistant Referees?

This is the thing though, the officials can't see everything at once just adding more officials are complicating matters and we would probably see more time during free kicks as the referees are trying to spot every little thing.

It works without any problem in ice hockey. Each official looks for something different. There is a need for a second official in each half in my opinion. Linesmen are obstructed by their view as there is only one for each half. And by allowing a linesman to concentrate solely on offsides and weather the ball crosses the line, it frees up the extra official to look for infringements in and around the box.

There isn't as many players on an ice hockey team though, there is no way 2 more officials are going to spot everything that goes on.

The amount of players is irrelevant. They are trying to have a situation where if a long ball is played up field and the ref is 30 yards behind the play that they have someone in place to see if Richard Dunne fouled Kenwin Jones in the box, or if Jones just fell over. Sometimes the action moves too fast for a referee, and the linesman is stuck on the opposite side of the pitch. Yes, every single thing is not going to be spotted, but by having more pairs of eyes out on the pitch it's going to help improve the decision making in my opinion.

This isn't what its for though, they are only going to be used during corners and free kicks which is why i can't see it working as there is already so much congestion in the box adding another official won't help spot every incident during that corner/free kick.

Re: Two More Assistant Referees?

There's not too much congestion in the box. Plus the new assistants wont necessarily be in the actual box. They could stand by the post just off the pitch. They'll start by being there for corners/free kicks, but it'll eventually move on to being there for everything. And that's what I'm in favour of.
