Coach Capello

Well, it’s no big secret anymore, Fabio Capello is set to be announced as the new England head coach sometime today. So, What do you think of Fabio Capello? Is he the right man for the job? Or should the FA have gone for someone else?

And what about his backroom staff? Should he appoint Englishmen to assist him, or should it be whoever is best available?

Re: Coach Capello

There is no one more qualified from their club achievements available to us and this is a good age for him to become an international manager.

His strengths are in man management and organisation and you have to believe we need those to be displayed in our national team!

He doesn't suffer from the "cult of celebrity" that Sven and Maclaren did too, so that's useful!

All round, I'm pretty happy about this choice. Initially I wanted O'Neill or Jose, but this is a very good option.

Re: Coach Capello

I'm quite surprised at the speed of the appointment considering they said at the start it would be an extensive search which would probably last until febuary.

However, it is a very good appointment and hopefully he does make the changes and the decisions McClaren was scared to do like Gareth Barry instead of Frank Lampard permanently

They believe they have the right candidate and they don't want to leave him out there unemployed and liable to be picked up at any stage by a big club.

It makes no sense to lose the guy they want just so they can avoid paying him wages over the next six months or so.

Re: Coach Capello

I find it amusing English people wanting to impose an illegial limit on foreign players yada yada yada

Then go and hire a foreign coach.

A little counter-productive.

Re: Coach Capello

Well when you speak to someone and figure he’s the right man for the job then there is no reason to hang about. Also the FA ideally needed to appoint someone before January, as there will be a meeting in the New Year to determine the fixtures for the forthcoming World Cup Qualifiers. This gives Capello the opportunity to be involved in preparations for that meeting.

Capello has a very impressive CV, but it will be interesting to se how he does at international level. Will he be able to transfer his club success to the international arena? At club level he had players all year round, but now he will only have up to 10 days with his players. I feel Sven had this problem when he took over as England head coach. Brilliant club manager, but found it difficult having players for a limited amount of time.

Also Capello has used the same four men to help him during the whole of his management career. If the FA insist on him using Englishmen instead of his trusted aids, that could work against him.

I am somewhat baffled by the length of his contract. I’d have given him an initial 2 year deal, running until the end of the World Cup, and then upon qualification offer him another 2 year extension. If the unthinkable happens and England do not qualify for the World Cup, then they will almost certainly fire Capello, meaning they’d have to pay out even more money on a coach who failed. International managers should have contracts from tournament to tournament, unless you are willing to back your manager no matter what.

His contact is to the 2012 but there is a window at the end of the 2010 World Cup for both parties to terminate it.
