Solskjaer retires

http://www.skysports.com/story/0,195...690166,00.html

Manchester United favourite Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has retired due to a knee injury, according to Sky Sports News.

Solskjaer will be forever remembered in United folklore for scoring the dramatic winner in the UEFA Champions League final against Bayern Munich in 1999.

That goal was one of almost 130 he scored for The Red Devils after joining from Molde in a £1.5million transfer 11 years ago.

He made over 360 appearances for the club, but recent seasons have been blighted by injury.

The 34-year-old did maintain a level of fitness last season, scoring 11 goals as United won the title and reached the FA Cup final.

But he did not figure during the pre-season campaign after undergoing a knee operation over the summer.

This was expected to be his final season as a player at Old Trafford, but he has now decided to announce his retirement.

Solskjaer's decision to quit could prompt Sir Alex Ferguson to rethink his attacking options prior to the close of the transfer window.

Along with Wayne Rooney, Carlos Tevez and Louis Saha, Solskjaer was expected to form part of Ferguson's plans up front.

But the United manager may now require further reinforcements in attack.

Re: Solskjaer retires

Some sad news indeed. Ole will always be remembered for that European Cup Winning goal in 99. He was one of the games likeable characters, not flashy, got on with his job, and didn't complain at all. He was a true role model for any youngster. I hope he has a happy retirement, and now turns his hand to coaching tomorrows stars.

Re: Solskjaer retires

This is coming from an Arsenal fan but Solskjaer is one of the players i respect the most in football. He always kept to himself. Never talked bad about other teams. Willing to fight for his place at Utd when he could have gotten first team football elsewhere. The young players could and hopefully will learn a lot from him.

Re: Solskjaer retires

^^ Sol Campbell might, didn't he help get him sent off somewhat controversially a few years back??

For me, I'll alway remember (though not correctly!) the hat trick he got, it may have been four goals, when he came on in the Prem at Forest quite a few years ago.

I'm only guessing, but he came on with like ten or twenty minutes left and scored 3 or 4 goals. Unbelievable stuff.

Re: Solskjaer retires

It is sad news, and The Sun today said his goal celebration in that Champions League final when he slid along may have been the start of his knee problems. He's claimed that was the first time he felt any pain there.

Just a side note, have you spelt the name right? It's just whenever I see it written down, it always looks like this:

Solskjaer (90)

Tomorrow's Just An Excuse Away,
So I Pull My Collar Up And Face The Cold, On My Own.
The Earth Laughs Beneath My Heavy Feet,
At The Blasphemy In My Old Jangly Walk.
