The Lions

No not the Rugby team, what I'm looking for here (instead) is a Lions team for football.

Okay, it'll never ever happen, but what if we decided to amalgamate in football and make up a Lions teams to compete for the European Championships or World Cup?

Who would be in?

Who would be the manager?

And, of course, for the purposes of this thread, the Lions is the same as the Rugby Lions, that is British and Irish Lions, so you can include Republic players here too.

I'll come back to this when I'm thinking straighter!!

Re: The Lions

I would probably go for something that looks a little like this -

Shay Given (Newcastle & Republic of Ireland)
John Terry (Chelsea & England)
Jamie Carragher (Liverpool & England)
Ashley Cole (Chelsea & England)
Steve Finnan (Liverpool & Republic of Ireland)
Owen Hargreaves (Bayern Munich & England)
Frank Lampard (Chelsea & England)
Steven Gerrard (Liverpool & England)
Ryan Giggs (Manchester United & Wales)
Wayne Rooney (Manchester United & England)
Michael Owen (Newcastle United & England)

I thought I'd get more non English players in. I tried!!

I'd certainly have Craig Gordon & David Healey on the bench.

As manager....if it had to be one of the current national managers, then it'd probably be Lawrie Sanchez. If I could go for any other manager I'd go for Martin O'Neil.

Re: The Lions

I’ve gone a little different and picked two teams for two different systems.

4-3-3 (3 narrow in midfield and two wide players supporting the front man, ala Man Utd on Tuesday night)

GK Shay Given (Rep of Ire)

LB Gareth Bale (Wales)
CB John Terry (England)
CB Danny Gabidon (Wales)
RB Micah Richards (England)

CM Steven Gerrard (England)
CM John O’Shea (Rep of Ire)
CM Jason Koumas (Wales)

LF Ryan Giggs (Wales)
CF Wayne Rooney (England)
RF David Healy (N.Ireland)

4-4-2

GK Shay Given (Rep of Ire)

LB Gareth Bale (Wales)
CB John Terry (England)
CB Danny Gabidon (Wales)
RB Gary Neville (England)

LM Ryan Giggs (Wales)
CM John O’Shea (Rep of Ireland)
CM Frank Lampard (England)
RM David Beckham (England)

ST Robbie Keane (Rep of Ireland)
ST Wayne Rooney (Wales)

Manager: John Toshack

Re: The Lions

Lol, slightly contentious Deadly!!

Bale is a better left back, right now, than Ashley Cole??

David Healey or Robbie Keane better international strikers than Owen?

O'Shea better than Gerrard?

Gabbidon better than Carra, Rio or Ledley?

I hereby denounce you as being Celtic and claim my £5.

Re: The Lions

Bale vs. Cole
Gareth is quality. He could walk into any premiership side. Ashley hasn't shown the form he had at Arsenal for Chelsea in my opinion.

Healy/Keane vs. Owen
Owen is always injured

O'Shea vs. Gerrard
No he's not, but for the balance in a 4-4-2 I'd like to see one attacking midfileder and one defensive midfileder in the team.

Gabbidon vs. Rio/Jamie/Leadly
He's just as good as them... well maybe not Rio, but he just plays for a bad team.

Why No Scots...
They're just not good enough. Only 3 Scots played in the Premiership last weekend!!

Did you not watch Ashley putting your boy Ronaldo in his pocket this season at Old Trafford. I doubt Bale would do that.

Lol, so is Keane!!

Yeah, for a reason, none of the big clubs have signed him!

Lol, no disagreement there!! Though I do think Craig Gordon and Paul Hartley are fine players
