| Beckham Steps Down As Captain David Beckham has quit as England captain after last night's heartbreaking World Cup defeat against Portugal. Fighting back tears, the Real Madrid man said: "I've lived the dream and am extremely proud to have worn the armband and been captain of England." Beckham - who plans to keep playing for the national side - said he had made the decision some time ago but had planned to announce it after a successful World Cup campaign. In a prepared statement, he said: "On November 15, 2000 Peter Taylor gave me the greatest honour of my career and fulfilled my childhood dreams. "Almost six years later I feel the time is fight to pass on the armband. "It has been an honour and a privilege and I stress I wish to continue playing for England." Meanwhile, England head coach Sven-Goran Eriksson said he was "really sorry" England have been dumped out of the World Cup. "I'm sorry," he told a press conference this morning - the last of his reign. "I'm really sorry. Sorry for the team and the squad and all the England fans. They deserved something better." But he urged people not to blame Wayne Rooney, 20, for the defeat after his sending off. "You need Wayne Rooney so please pay attention - he's the golden boy of English football, don't kill him I beg you, he a fantastic footballer," he said. The England squad will head home today after their yet another penalty shootout failure. As well as Rooney's red card, the dramatic quarter-final saw Beckham leave the pitch injured and three players miss their vital spot-kicks. The players were devastated by going out, some of the team crying after Manchester United winger Cristiano Ronaldo - blamed by some for getting Rooney sent off - sealed their fate from the penalty spot. Police say 80,000 England fans had been Gelsenkirchen area for the game, with around 30,000 holding tickets for the match. Officers said it was the largest ever movement of England supporters and the vast majoroty were rpaised for ther good behaviour. There was minor trouble in the town afterwards with 105 English fans detained for various matters including drunken and aggressive behaviour. A total of 224 people were held. The worst incident at home was on Jersey where police in riot gear arrested more than 25 people for public order offences in a Portuguese area of the island. ------------------------- I personally think he should retire from International football altogether as he's pretty much finished as a starter for England in my view and this way it would be less embarrassing for him but meh... As for new captain, I sortof though I'd prefer Gerrard at the start...But I'm expecting Terry to get it and I'm pretty pleased with that now... | |||||||||||||||

| "John Terry is favourite to become England captain following David Beckham's decision to quit the role after five and a half years in the aftermath of England's World Cup exit. Terry, 25, who made his full debut for his country less than three years ago, has captained Chelsea to the two Premiership title triumphs under Jose Mourinho." ESPN Soccernet So yeh, i guess John Terry will become captain because i don't see any other worthy candidates. | ||||||||||||||
