Randy Lerner buys Aston Villa FC

Four consortia had been linked with the club but the Villa board have recommended 44-year-old Lerner's offer to shareholders.

Doug Ellis, 82, chairman from 1968-75 and since 1982, is to stand down.

He has been the target of constant supporter unrest in recent seasons, with fans upset at his lack of financial backing.

Lerner, who owns American football team Cleveland Browns, conducted the offer through his company Reform Acquisitions Ltd (RAL), which was specifically set up to launch his bid.

The deal could still be hijacked but at present Lerner's offer has been deemed most appropriate.
Randy Lerner has bought one of English footballs top clubs. So I was just wondering if any of you football fans in the US could tell me how Randy Lerner operates? Is he a hands on type of guy, or will he just get other people to runs stuff? Any info on the guy would be good.

We've already got Glazer here with Manchester United. Even before his health problems he let his sons get on with the day to day business there. I wonder if this is the start of a new trend... American businessmen buying English football clubs?

Edge will rise again...

He's actually been pretty good with the Browns. He's willing to spend the money to bring the right people in, and he's willing to operate on a loss in order to have a winning team.

Who knows what he'll be like with a team that he didn't grow up around though.

Given that the financial takeover itself won't be complete until after 31st August (when the transfer window shuts) ,it's tough to see there being too much/too many signings coming in for the first half of the season. From what I've read about the guy he sounds an excellent investor for the club. He's purchasing them with his own money and has an active interest in football (soccer) already since he lived here for 3 years in the past, so there are not a lot of similarities between his purchase and the Glazers of Man Utd. Villa fans must be very happy at the moment

I was always quite bemused at their complete hatred of Doug Ellis. Yes he got through managers pretty quick, but most of them he did so with the supporters requesting the guy was sacked. Nearly all those managers also got a lot of cash to spend (it's not his fault they spent £10m on Bosko Balaban!!). The have a nice 42,000 all seater stadium and have never been out of the Premiership. I find it hard to see where the complete hatred comes from, unless these fans believe (like a lot of so called "big club" fans believe) that they have a divine right to Champions League football and the highest reaches of the Prem.
