I went to a UWA (PWA) Hardcore Show out in Mississauga (western end of Toronto) last night and they had on the card Chris Sabin, Sonjay Dutt, Alex Shelley, Puma, and Petey Williams. Now with those names on the show, you would think that the fed would put on a good show. They were the only reason I went to the show. I've been to quite a few indy shows in my day here in Toronto and have worked a few myself, sometimes the boys can surprise you, I have to say that this was one of
the worst wrestling shows I've been to since Twin Wrestling Entertainment did a free show at a shopping mall!!! Somone told me it's like ECW... The Hell it wasn't, this shit would have Paul Heyman himself spinning in a grave.
First off, the said the card started at 7PM as advertised on the net and local newspaper. They didn't let us in until almost 8:30, so the show didn't start until almost 9PM!!!! FALSE ADVERTISING. When I got there, there was no indication where people who had general admission or VIP were supposed to line up. Because of that, most of us were in the wrong line and had to go stand elsewhere despite getting there early enough for a good seat. The rule of thumb is when a show is slated to start at a certain time, you start at a certain time - it's called good business. Not to mention you have to tell people where to stand, especially those who needed to buy tickets at the door. Having been around the business myself, I know how aggravated the fans get having to stand outside and wait with no indication of WTF is going on or having to move elsewhere at the last minute b/c people were too stupid to tell you where to stand in the first place. So when I finally got in there, there were hardly a lot of people, maybe 400 tops. But that didn't prepare me for the crap ass matches I had to sit through for the next 4 hours!!!
This fed is built on cruisers and guys who didn't weigh more than $1.50 soaking wet. Most of them looked like they hadn't seen a sandwich in years nor the ring experience either. The matches themselves had absolutely
NO psychology and were nothing but spot fests. That was it. After 20 mins of spots, you get really bored, trust me I did and I'm pretty tolerant when it comes to wrestling matches. Not to mention that their ring announcer was a clear rip off of Joey Styles, right from the attire, to the voice, to him actually starting the show with "Oh My God!"
The only retaining factor were the matches the guys from TNA were involved in. One was a Triple Threat Match that saw Sabin, Shelley and Dutt go at it and for 25+ mins there was psychology involved and
quality (not like the other garbage on the roster).
The other was the main event that pitted Petey Williams v. Puma. Again, there was psychology and great wrestling, they told a story instead of showing the crowd "look what I can do" and "look how many times I can dive out of the ring w/out killing myself."
I also have to give honourable mentions to the match veterans that were there, that I remember from back in the day Danger Boy Derrek Wylde and Phil Atlas, as well as CZW Champ Chris Hero - those guys
carried their matches b/c the other guys had NO clue what they were doing in the ring.
So overall, despite shelling $10 for the show, it wasn't even worth the remaining $9.95. And that's being generous, b/c truthfully it wasn't even worth 5 cents.
If you are ever in the area, DO NOT go to a UWA (PWA) Hardcore show, b/c it's a waste of time and money. Go check out Blood, Sweat and Ears, instead - at least there you get your money's worth.
I took pics of the Triple Threat and Williams' match, so I'll post them when I get them.
