It wasn’t too long ago that “Fallen Angel” Christopher Daniels made a $10 bet with Raven about a comic book that they both enjoy. The wager was about the pronunciation of Ex Machina, which is Latin for “god from the machine” from the Greek.
Raven said it sounded like "machine", but with an “a” on the end. Daniels said, instead, it would be "mock-in-a".
Daniels eventually proved his case and collected the loot.
Disgrunted, Raven stormed off, proven wrong, “and that meant more to me than the $10,” Daniels said, laughing.
Daniels and Raven are two of the biggest comic book junkies in the business.
“Early on, comic books were just a form of escapism. They were fun to read and the art was something that appealed to me,” Daniels said. “As I’ve grown up, I’ve become a big fan of the story-telling aspect of comic books. I’m now more interested in the authors as opposed to the art, although the art is still something that attracts me. I’m a big fan of intelligent writing in comic books, which is something that doesn’t just cater to the lowest common-denominator.”
Daniels, 34, has been wrestling since 1993. He’s had brief stints in the WWE and WCW, but has been a popular mainstay on the independent scene. He’s been a TNA stalwart since 2002 and was the X Division champion in 2005.
“The last couple of years have been a lot of fun. That’s what happens when things are going well professionally,” Daniels said. “I’ve been a pro since 1993, but it wasn’t until 1999 that this was my full-time job. Once that happened, a lot of pressure came off my shoulders.
“The past couple of years have been great; I’ve been having the time of my life.”
So, Chris, what’s the deal with the tattoo?
“First, it’s an Egyptian onyx and when I first got it, I didn’t exactly know what it meant. Sure, I knew it was a new-age symbol, but I thought it had to do with youth,” said Daniels, who got the ink along with Kevin Quinn (calf) and Brett Sanders (arm) who he trained with years ago for wrestling.
“When we were training, we had the attitude that we were the future. That was going to be our symbol and it meant youth to us. I now realize it means "life in the soul.”
Daniels said he is asked about the tattoo on a regularly, especially in bars.
And, it is not the sign for females.
“I hesitated for a while (about getting it), not wanting to have a tattoo on my chest if I wasn’t going to be a wrestler. Then, when I got to be about 28, I realized, yeah, I was going to be a wrestler.”
The tattoo took about 30 minutes.
Was it painful?
No, he said. “It wasn’t bad at all. I thought it was going to hurt a lot worse than it did. I’ve had (wrestling) injuries that have been a lot more painful than this tattoo. When I landed on my head in WCW, that was 10 times worse pain, maybe 100 times worse.”
