By Ross Forman
Surprisingly, being a pro wrestler was not Alex Shelley’s ultimate career goal. Oh, sure, he’s long admired the business and has spent countless hours studying the ins and outs of the mat wars. But he’s wanted other gigs along the way.
At age 17, for instance, Shelley went to art school in Michigan. “I really couldn’t do anything, such as, sculpt, paint, make crappy jewelry, or whatever,” he said. “But, I could draw really well. On any medium.” That was actually Dream Job No. 2.
Long before that, Shelley dreamed of being a super-hero, such as X-Man. “I quickly realized I was not going to develop super-powers any time soon, although I still have my fingers crossed that, well, maybe I will,” he said.
Enter pro wrestling, the next logical step, or leap as the case may be. “Wrestling is pretty close to being a super-hero; you can fly around the ring in cool costumes.”
Shelley, less than four years as a pro, has blossomed into an X Division sensation. The Shellshock is Shelley’s ticket to mat glory. In addition to his run in TNA Wrestling, Shelley also has had stops in Japan.
“I know I’m very lucky to be in the position I’m now in,” he said. “At times, the people back home are more amazed at what I’m doing than I am. That’s kind of cool. If Tom Cruise is an A-level celebrity, I’d say I’m, oh, at about X-level. Perhaps I’ll get to W-level soon. I can only imagine what it’d be like to get to a vowel-status – U, O, I or dare I say, E.”
Shelley’s sly sense of humor shines like a championship belt he covets. But as quickly, he switches to the voice of reality, the same voice that preaches the importance of training, tanning and every necessary tool of a mat legend.
“Hopefully, I’ll be financially secure because that’s really the name of the game,” Shelley said. “It’s important to like what you’re doing and be satisfied with your life, but, the monetary aspect is important too. I’d really like a good balance of both. I’d like to be happy and financially-secure.”
That doesn’t necessarily mean driving a Lamborghini. But he doesn’t want to worry about where he’s going to get, or how he’s going to pay for, his next meal.
“I was so excited after my first career match, even though I earned less than $10,”
Shelley said. “At that point, the monetary issues were as low as they could go, yet the level of excitement and fun was as high as it could go.
“Eventually everything balances out.”
Shelley’s ringside video camera isn’t just a gimmick or a prop that, if need be, could be used to KO an opponent. It’s the most valuable teacher he knows.
“I study a lot of wrestling – of myself and others,” he said. “In particular, I study in-ring foot-work, which is an aspect of wrestling that is quite under-rated. A wrestler has to know how to pivot in the ring, stay on light on his feet and just make things look good.”
Shelley has been doing a pretty good job of that lately, with video proof.
Ross Forman will be profiling TNA Wrestlers in his continuing series, “Outside the Ring.” Anyone with story ideas or suggestions can email Ross at: To view links or images in this forum your post count must be 20 or greater. You currently have 0 posts. .
