    Backlash: Shawn Michaels vs. Batista

After two confrontations, one on SmackDown and then again on Chris Jericho’s Highlight Reel, it’s official: Shawn Michaels and Batista will go one-on-one at Backlash with Y2J acting as special guest referee.

Michaels and Batista have argued back-and-forth on whether or not HBK made the right decision by ending Ric Flair’s career at WrestleMania XXIV. The Animal blames Michaels for ruining his mentor’s livelihood, going so far as to tell HBK that he should have laid down for Flair on The Grandest Stage of Them All. The Interpromotional Challenge was inked by Raw GM William Regal and SmackDown GM Vickie Guerrero moments after the Highlight Reel confrontation on Raw.

Never one to back (or lay) down, Michaels has fired back that he gave Flair “exactly what he had asked for at WrestleMania,” adding that, he did “what anyone would have done.”

The idea to have Jericho officiate came about when Raw traveled to England. It was there, in his homeland, that Regal made the decision to put Y2J in stripes after watching a frustrated Michaels silence an antagonistic Jericho with Sweet Chin Music.

What will happen when Michaels and Batista, two top-caliber athletes, and former champions, collide at Backlash? Will Batista unleash his anger over Flair’s retirement on the man responsible? Or will HBK give The Animal exactly what he gave Flair at WrestleMania – the fight of his life?

As if the ending wasn't hard to predict before, with Y2J thrown in, I am very curious as to how this turns out. Especially with Y2J getting owned all this week, he needs to come out on top eventually.

Y2J being thrown in ruined it for me.

I think Y2J being thrown around serves a purpose. Come match time, he'll prob beat the crap out of HBK and Batista.

Is there any reason for this?

I think he adds an element to the match where now for me at least, it's unmissable.

A feud with these two is big enough without Y2J. He could be defending the IC title instead of being a crash test dummy.

I agree but hopefully it leads to more than just being a crash test dummy.

I have to agree with this statement. Not only did it add an unneeded element to the match, but it also means that the IC title wont be defended at Backlash. I thought that Jericho would help to establish the mid card division with the title. I guess he's just picking up where Hardy left off.

Everyone is already expecting a heel turn, and I doubt Jericho and Batista will form some sort of partnership. I think the Batista/ HBK match has enough interest on its own. It has the compelling Ric Flair storyline, the unknown but known reasons why Batista doesn't like HBK, and the attitude change of Batista.

In my opinion, Jericho being there overshadows the reason for the match. Even the announcers are promoting Jericho's involvement in the match more than anything else. When the match is all over, it's going to be more about Jericho's involvement in the match rather than the match itself.

WTF? Since when has Jericho been the special ref?

I don't know why they're doing it, but the match itself can be great or descent. I have a feeling the feud will continue, so they might save a little bit.
