A lot of very good points I've just read. End of the day, wherever Hogan was or is, (except modern day) Hogan is the biggest name in the company. Because he's Hulk Hogan and almost everyone knew who he was when he wrestled, even non wrestling fans. In fact having your name recognised by non wrestling fans is probably the biggest valid argument to settle who's the bigger star and someone said earlier too, Bret Hart was more recognised than Shawn Michaels. If I was to go into work with two names on a card, which do you think is a wrestler, I'm confident more would recognise Bret Hart. Bret was a megastar in wrestling when he left for wcw, if it was Shawn Michaels leaving for wcw in 96/97 his name doesn't mean squat as Bret does. And neither will ever be bigger than Hogan.

Can anyone from the states with better knowledge than me confirm that Bret was so much more recognizable than Shawn to the general public? It's a very small sample size but the casual wrestling fans that I was exposed to would think that Shawn was a bigger name.

From what I've seen, Shawn Michaels is a much bigger name in the states than anywhere else compared to Bret. Could be his second run with WWE helping him out, but I could also have a small sample size of casual fans here too.
