Moxley's return is an early leader/contender for me.

Definitely 100% the return of Shane McMahon. And the unexpected Royal Rumble win by Brock. No one saw that coming!

Cody’s debut at mania feels like the front runner so far. That and Vince punting the football at Pat.

I'd put Steve Austin competing for the first time since 2003 up there

I would definitely lean towards Austin over Cody for this.

I wouldn’t really put it over Cody at Mania, but I’d certainly give a mention to MJF’s villain backstory promo on Punk. In a time when nearly everything in wrestling is a rehash, homage or influenced by something, that felt like something quite new and well executed. Or at least, I can’t recall another example of a despised heel tricking a crowd into thinking he was the babyface and their favourite was the heel.

I kind of want to say Austin wrestling, simply because of how unexpected it was. Hard to top Cody returning to WWE though.

Re: 2022 Moment of the Year Ongoing Discussion

I don't think Cody returning is that big of a deal just because of how far down the totem pole he fell in wrestling overall when at one point he might've been one of the most over guys in wrestling, and in AEW for sure.

I think Austin returning and wrestling a match, for an actual decent length of time, takes the cake for me so far.

Re: 2022 Moment of the Year Ongoing Discussion

I would still say Cody is one of the most over guys in wrestling, he’s probably the top babyface in the biggest company in the world.

He's definitely better off now than when he was in AEW, where he fell really far down the food chain. I'm talking specifically about the moment he debuted though. He left AEW as THE coldest act in the company, getting boo'ed out of every building with go-away heat. If he left as one of the top guys in the company ala 2019 or beginning in 2020, different story, but even then, I still don't think that's as big of a moment as Austin wrestling a full match.

Re: 2022 Moment of the Year Ongoing Discussion

In the Cody situation, it's also important to remember that this is a guy who willingly left WWE to bet on himself, helped start a new company that quickly became the number two promotion in the world, and made a triumphant return to WWE at their biggest show of the year. It's also the first instance of someone leaving AEW to go to WWE, where things have always been the reverse to this point. I'm not saying it's the opening salvo in a "war" between the two promotions either, but it's definitely a watershed moment in pro wrestling and undoubtedly one of the biggest of the year so far.

That being said, I could just as easily say Stone Cold, because, again, I just never imagined he'd actually have a competitive match in 2022. Plus, it wasn't spoiled like the Cody return was, so the surprise factor certainly works in its favour.

Re: 2022 Moment of the Year Ongoing Discussion

Cody returning to WWE is likely the more historically major moment. Stone Cold returning had me more in awe though. Either of those, as well as Moxley's big return from rehab promo, definitely warrant consideration.

Re: 2022 Moment of the Year Ongoing Discussion

I think it HAS to be the Austin return. Arguably the biggest star of all time returns. Should be moment of the year any year, especially considering how unexpected it was that he would actually wrestle again.
