Oh, they are vicious. And we played perfectly to their intent. High line, wide defenders constantly pushing high up in attack. As soon as we turn the ball over - which is quite often between Willian and Bellerin - we are carved open. It was massively predictable.

And our "attack" is laughable. The most crosses of any match this season and what did we manage for shots on target? Arteta unwilling or unable to deviate, saying he doesn't have any ideas after the match and that this will work statistically. But it isn't and its predictable as fuck and most Prem clubs can defend an endless stream of crosses unless they are high quality, which our aren't. And we don't have forwadrs to make this smart at all.. Of any way in which he was going to fail, I did not expect Arteta to be the second coming of Moyes at United.

It's funny you say that because I actually made the comment yesterday that Arsenal were like Moyes' United with how many aimless crosses Arsenal put in yesterday, with no strategy to change it when it was not working, and not even having the right personnel for that approach

However, that's an insult to Moyes'United because he at least made sure they still played defense.

I remember saying on this forum that arteta wouldn’t work out.

Looking at the title race ahead of a big weekend, I still fancy Liverpool but I like spurs as the team that pushes them. Liverpool brushed aside a toothless wolves who look like they’ll really miss Raul up front if he’s out for an extended period of time. Really good win, but wolves were there for the taking. I have been really impressed with Jose’s spurs and how they’ve improved defensively from last season, they may be dull to watch for 90 mins, but they’re killer in front of goal. City doing the relegation teams over with ease doesn’t impress me, it’s the big games I’ve still got question marks on, so the derby this weekend will be an interesting one to watch.

Re: Premier League 2020/21 Discussion Thread

It would be nice to have an interesting title race this year (considering we had pretty much won it by this time last year) so I hope Spurs & even Chelsea can keep it up for now. I reckon City will push on from this point, KDB is seemingly finding his form again and Pep always manages to find a way to push on. The only thing they are missing is a solid 20+ goal a season striker. Aguero's legs are giving it and Jesus just isn't that guy. I also find it ironic that we've improved defensively since Van Dijk & Gomez both got injured...losing them has really made us change our game defensively and come up with different ways to stop teams. Come the end of the season I totally expect the top 4 to finish Pool/City/Chelsea/Spurs...just depends on which order.

Arsenal.....The only saving grace for them right now is that it's still fairly early and 2/3 wins mean they jump from 16th into the top 10. Look at Man U, for as poor as they've been this year, a couple of wins recently have put them into 6th place with a game in hand. They really do need to change something though, Auba looks like a shell of the player he was last year...Willian & Laca are fine but shouldn't be starting games, Pepe is running through his 9 lives fairly quickly, They're midfield is pretty uninspiring, and when David Luiz is seemingly one of your most reliable and experienced defender...you know you're asking for trouble.

Re: Premier League 2020/21 Discussion Thread

Time for a rant? Nah, not really. Yesterday's result was pretty much expected, and locked in after the absolutely idiotic red card. But I'm starting to believe we are in genuine danger this season. Everyone is dismissing it because "we have too much quality" in the squad... but quality doesn't matter a lick if those players will not or cannot perform. There is simply not such thing as too big to go down.

We haven't won a match since the start of November. We have lost four in a row at home. We don't score goals from open play. We don't get shots on goal. We have folded defensively. We have a rookie manager. This is a genuine mess.

This is the players fault. This is the managers fault. And this is the boards fault. No one here is innocent.

More and more, I blame the players. Almost half of the first team squad were here under Wenger. They gave up under Wenger. They gave up under Emery. They were giving up under Freddie. And now they appear to have given up under Arteta. Sensing a trend?

For all the positives he did for this club and as much as I love the man, Wenger left some rot. Its a bit like what Fergie left behind at United when he retired but instead of just a squad in need of an overhaul, Wenger left behind a squad in need of an overhaul full of players with some toxic traits. Wenger cultivated a footballing oasis, where there was no outside pressure on players which seems to have created a cultural of no accountability. Players knew that no matter how poorly they performed, they were never in danger of being dropped or of being called out publicly. There was a layer of insulation. Sure, toxic Arsenal supporters might lose it on social media (and sometimes cross lines that shouldn't be crossed) but that was the only real pressure. That attitude still seems to be permeating in the squad.

I was so hopeful of Arteta being the right guy but its looking increasingly like that's not the case. Or maybe he WAS the right guy and a combination of self-sabotage and squad issues are sinking him. Regardless, while I completely get the argument that he needs time and transfer windows and new players to implement his "style", a very good managing is always going to work with imperfect players and find ways to make them fit. He isn't doing that. At all. He is making squad selection decisions like continuing to pick the same underperforming veterans and choosing to cross 30-plus times a match because "the maths say it will work". In true Arsenal fashion, there is no learning, no changing, and no growth.

Mistakes and losses are part of football. Some of the Gooners faithful forget that, but its true. But that is always hopefully predicated on the idea those things teach something and the players and manager and club learn. And that just doesn't happen here.

So much of what Arteta said in the early going SOUNDED so good. Non-negotiables. Our defensively solidity suddenly became a thing. We were competitive again against the big sides. We won the FA Cup. Everything was moving forward. It was progress. And its all gone.

Our attack hasn't been worth the label and our defense has dropped off massively after the first few fixtures. Whether it was defending exactly as Jose wanted us to against Tottenham or trying to score goals purely through crosses (David Moyes approves of this method), its all questionable. Playing the same underperforming players. Auba isn't scoring. Lacazette doesn't seem to score at all anymore. Willian had 5 of 30 crosses find an Arsenal player in the last two matches and yesterday, he completed 37 passe with 2 of those going forward. And yet he will start again. And again. And again.

The rumors floating about are ugly. Like BAD ugly. The squad didn't take very well to Arteta declaring he would "destroy" whichever player leaked the fight between Luiz and Ceballos. Apparently Ozil and Sokratis are still seen as team leaders despite being left out of the squad registration, and players still don't understand why that was done. And now apparently Arteta has "fallen out" with David Luiz, who has managed to get something like 4 or 5 managers fired through his career.... so far. We had "clear the air talks" last week, where Arteta made the threat over the leak and the players had it out afterwards... and that all led to THIS performance.

Firing the manager is a solution. But it solves nothing. These players are still here. The ones who have quit on 4 managers in the past few seasons and many of whom clearly don't give a fuck. Some do care - Tierney, Gabriel, and some of the younger players like Saka. But so many don't. And if Luiz is just going to lead another insurrection against the next manager when they are asked to actually perform on a consistent basis, we are just going in circles. The information coming out of the club is that Arteta retails full support.

Which is good, in a way, because the club is in no way in a position to replace the manager. Wenger stayed at least a season longer than he should have because there was no real management structure between the board and him. And we have now managed to create the same situation with Arteta. He looks to have almost the same level of control over footballing operations as Wenger did, which is absolutely insane given his experience level. We lost Raul Sanlehei and our contract specialist and they haven't been replaced. So we not only don't have any footballing people who have experience in finding a manager, but we have to find a number of people who can fill roles. We are such a fucking mess.

So basically, I'm not expecting any change for the positive in any way and I'm getting my body ready for the Championship next season.

See there isn't too much difference between Arsenal and Man Utd in many ways...except Man Utd players can turn it on in regular inconsistent spells...Arsenal players don't.

"I don't understand why Arsenal are so poor...."

[Squawka] Willian failed to produce a shot on target, make a successful cross, complete a take-on, make a successful tackle or win any of the four duels he contested in 90 minutes against Everton.

And yet Willian is NAILED ON to start against Chelsea. There is a definite element of performances not mattering if you are a veteran player because there are no consequences or repercussions. That dates back to the latter years of Wenger and some of the veteran players are hanging onto it, including some newer signings. Arteta is far from guilt-free as he keeps picking some of these players, maintaining that reality that playing horrifically poorly just means you will still get picked for the next match, or maybe the one after. Its sinking this club. There are some players who give a fuck, but they are few and most are just indifferent. You have players like Ceballos who make a concerted effort to hide themselves on the pitch and its infuriating because he will just start again anyway.

We are headed for the drop.

Multiple reports out today that Arsenal are planning for the possibility of a relegation. In case you wanted to know where the club's headspace is at. And given how well planning for everything else has gone in the last few yeas with this club, I am very very reassured by this "planning".

    ^ Hilarious if true.

As interesting (albeit sad) as it would be to see Arsenal get relegated. There's zero chance it happens. At their worst, they are still better than Sheffield & WBA right now (Sorry Ed) and I just can't imagine one of Fulham/Burnley/Brighton staying in the league next year at the expense of them.

Arsenal are cancerous, and they're not gonna recover to get to qualify for Europe, but there will still be 3 worse teams than them come May.

Re: Premier League 2020/21 Discussion Thread

Top of the league and 3 points clear? Didn't expect to be in this position at this point in the season, but I'll take it. Imagine where we would be if our early season home form had been better.

Ole is finally working out our best combinations in defense, midfield and attack and is using the squad well to rotate. I've been very pleased with Pogpa in particular recently. Since his stupid agent has come out saying he wants to leave he's been a revelation. Another dominant performance from him tonight and it's good to see someone taking the pressure off Fernandes.
I'm also very happy that Ole is giving Bailly a chance in the team and that he's so far staying fit. He's definitely a better partner to Maguire as he has the pace that Lindelof lacks to compliment Maguire. Hopefully he continues to stay healthy.

Huge, huge game upon Sunday against Liverpool for us next. The pressure is all on them to get a result so it's great that that is the case in that respect. Hopefully we can at the very least cancel them out and get a point but if we can squeeze out a win?... We're putting ourselves in a wonderful position.
