It's definitely unfair to blame Pogba. He was very clumsy and at fault for the pen but he wasn't any worse than Bruno or McTominay beside him for the game in general. Not poor, just unhelpful. Pogba's not been good at all this season, and I don't know why he is picked over Van de Beek other than the club wanting to get their money's worth given the wages he has, but he is not the main problem of the team. Pundits tend to say that it's because of expectation which does have some merit but I don't know what people expect. He's a few goals away from his record at Juve (assists are already suppassed) so they just overhype what they think Pogba can do, I guess.

Our league form is pretty awful. For most sides, not just for United's expecations. Even with a game in hand, the best place we can be after Saturday is 12th. Our performances in the Champions League can't overshadow this although it's tough when you're beating top contenders with ease. I don't see a change in managers would do much. We didn't buy what we needed in the Summer thanks to the board being useless (or unwilling to spend. Both is my pick) so maybe we can hold up until January and get some boosts. I hope it's just bad form that'll go away because there is no real reason for why the league has started off poorly.

Pogba has been poor, but he’s definitely used as the scapegoat for an awful United side. Whenever things are not going right, he seems to be the man who bears the brunt of the blame. End of the day he’s only one player and shouldn’t have to carry the weight of the entire team on his back. Everyone around him has to step their game up too.

I tend to listen very little to any pundits these days. Most of those in punditry jobs on the main channels at the moment talk out of their asses most of the time, putting the blame of the weekend defeat onto Pogpa is entirely unfair. Has he been poor as of late? Yes, he certainly has, but he's far from the only one. Our defense in general has been dog shit this season (De Gea aside, surprisingly, as he's been good since th enew sason began). Our midfield has one good game in 5 at the minute and our forwards aren't firing at full capacity.

Trying to blame Pogba for the loss to us is asinine. It wasn't Pogba's fault that we created a few good scoring chances that we didn't convert. It wasn't Pogba's fault that United didn't create many chances and that the ones that were created weren't converted, nor is it his fault that Partey managed to mark Bruno out of the whole stadium. Pogba is inconsistent and I'm sure as a fan that's really frustrating.... but consistently blaming him for the failings of the whole side or the manager is.... just biased.

Arsenal are absolutely not going to get anything at all from this match with this front three. It flat out doesn't work, hasn't worked, continues to not work, and yet Arteta is sticking with it.

I'm still trying to work out why he continues to play his 20 goals a season natural striker on the wing......

Re: Premier League 2020/21 Discussion Thread

Both Willian and Lacazette have been generally AWFUL. I get that Laca works hard, but he's slow, out of form, and he misses at least one glorious chance a match. But both continue to start. And as far as I can reckon, will continue to start. We didn't get FM'd... we got out played. Villa 100% deserved that win and that's kinda frustrating to say. There was no part of that match where we could claim to be "better".

Like that, the positivity of the United win is gone. Our attack is still awful and our defending regressed seriously... Its one match, but its kinda worrying.

Willian's best position is out wide in a front 3, so if Arteta wants to persist with playing him then he needs to drop Lacazette and play Pepe on the other wing with Auba through the middle. I think thats the best way forward for you to be honenst with Pratey, Elneny (who's come from nowhere to be a standout player this sason) and Saka or Ceballos.
I think Arsenal would be best places bringing Ozil back into the fold in the new year when you can re-regtister the squad as they could really do with a player of his quality right about now in midfield.

Re: Premier League 2020/21 Discussion Thread

So minor rant that isn't really a reaction to yesterday's match... I didn't expect a lot out of playing Leeds, despite them having a terrible defensive record. Coming away with a point isn't the worst result, especially as we got outplayed and if Leeds were even a bit better with the finishing, we would have lost 3-0 again like to Villa.

Just starting to accept some things about this club...

    • my expectations for this season have dropped to almost zero. Its a weird season in every way, for every club, and anything is possible. But so long as we don't get relegated, that's enough. Not really wasting any hope of us getting into Europe.
    • Arteta isn't a savior. Maybe it was unfair to every pin that hope on him. He's a young manager in his first job who has some flaws. He has definitely made some progress with the side, but he seems worryingly clueless about attacking. Maybe him trying to structure us so much defensively and wanting to direct every pass from the dugout is a net negative?
    • saying "we lack creativity" is really simplistic. Its accurate - we generate very few shots. But we have reasonably creative players in the side. So there is some disconnect there. But our attack is just so disjoined. There is a lack of running off the ball, a lack of clear overall movement and passing options, and we end up misplaying so much, turn the ball over, and then we are chasing backwards. Our midfield almost never passes to each other, which is kinda fucking strange but is by design - it happens even when the personnel change out.
    • I'm giving up on Pepe. Not due to the really stupid red card, but just because he's not delivering. His goal-assist totals last year weren't that awful but he just failed to really influence matches on any sort of consistent basis. Adaption, confidence, tactics... all play into the that. But he doesn't seem to be adapting any better. He still seems to be essentially the player he was at Lille - at his best running at defenders with lots of space. That works pretty well in a counter-attacking side where there is a lot of space, but that's not happening a lot at Arsenal except when we play big sides, and Pepe isn't adapting. Its not his fault we paid 72m for him and its his fault our esteemed director overpaid for him so Raul could help his friend at Lille, but we are not getting anything near value for investment. And that doesn't look to be changing. At this point, it looks like a hugely terrible transfer.
    • I love Kieran Tierney
    • the racist abuse of Pepe is indicative of how awful the Arsenal fan base can be at times.

Hope Raul Jiminez recovers quickly. That was ugly.

Almost as ugly as the challenge was leaving Luiz on the pitch. he was out of sorts, which seemed obvious. But beyond the footballing reasons, that just seems risky to keep that player on the pitch. They NEED to put some real concussion protocols in place that allow managers to replace that player without burning a substitution as managers will always opt to save that sub.

I see no reason why a blood substitution like they do in rugby wouldn’t work. Then if the player once assessed is not able to continue then it locks in the substitution as one of the three permitted.

BIG win for Albion, first league win in nearly five months. Hopefully that'll get us moving in the right direction and we can build on this with another positive result against Palace at the weekend. Syko, Gallagher is gonna be some player if he develops at this rate. He's walked into a premier league side and looks the part.

The Raul Jiminez injury was scary to watch. I think the news of Papa Bouba Diop dying being announced just before the game made the mood a bit sombre, and then that happens and you start fearing the worst. It could be a long road back for him, if at all.

Good to see the Aston Villa bubble has burst.

Klopp being an absolute baby this week. It's a shame Fergie isn't around to play mind games in a title race with him because he's so easily rattled.

I guess the booing of players taking a knee will be more and more common in the UK, with more and more fans getting back into the stadiums, huh...

Of course it will. Freedom of expressions and all that jazz. I'm not sure how much longer we'll see it in football to be honest. It was always going to be a difficult thing to do with fans in attendance, and I think the majority accepted that fact a while ago.

You just know these fannies saying "keep politics out of football" and booing the kneeling, are the same people who would be outraged at a player not wearing a poppy.

Fwiw, I think the kneeling was a good gesture to begin with, but it feels hollow now. I don't know what the solution is, but it feels like it's just being done for the optics and not an actual concentrated effort to change things.

Really getting sick of being on the wrong side of every ref decision this season. Staying up was a hard enough task, but today in huge games you get VAR officials finding little things to send our best player off for. 11 v 11 we get something from this, but now we’re getting spanked.

    Sorry, Ed. That blows.

Looks like Arsenal will be with in that relegation battle and I'm not even being facetious. We have a low-success method of attack that we don't deviate from and despite it resulting in the worst attack in the league, Arteta is doubling down on it and proclaiming this is exactly what he wants. We are so fucked.

Spurs on the counter attack are lethal. Poor defending from Arsenal but two great finishes from Son and Kane. Arsenal are in a really bad place on the table but the league is so close that a few games could change that. It's hard to say. United was in a way worse postion and now we're 5th with a game in hand.
