NJPW Summer Struggle in Jingu 29/08/2020

    Master Wato vs. Yoshinobu Kanemaru

KOPW Title Match: Toru Yano vs. Kazuchika Okada vs. SANADA vs. El Desperado

NEVER Openweight Title match: Shingo Takagi (c) vs. Minoru Suzuki

IWGP Heavyweight Tag Team Title Match : Taichi & Zack Sabre Jr. (c) vs. Hiroshi Tanahashi & Kota Ibushi

IWGP Junior Heavyweight Title Match: Hiromu Takahashi (c) vs. Taiji Ishimori

IWGP Heavyweight Title / IWGP Intercontinental Title Match: EVIL (c) vs. Tetsuya Naito

The lack of cards announcement until yesterday totally threw me for a loop. The rest of the cards will been announced as the tour progresses further. All of this tour looks to be a build build towards their massive Jingu Stadium show scheduled on the 29th of August. EVIL vs Naito looks to be the main event for that show.

The KOPW title is an extremely interesting concept. I don't have high hopes for it though.

Really big fan of running an outdoor stadium show too.

Will be shocked if Naito isn't able to get his win back. Should be a good moment in Jingu.

Ishimori vs Hiromu should be fun as well.

I change whether I like it or not every hour. The concept is new and puts the wrestlers in new environments, taking them outside of their comfort zones. However this feels very much like a placeholder event and seems oddly put together. The KOPW title will be vacated at the end of the year? That part just makes the tournement feel aimless. I feel they would've been better of giving Okada a big opponent or try and bring someone in for one match. I dunno. We'll see.

The Stadium setting is cool though. I was watching Tenryu vs Takada the other week which took place in the same venue and the atmosphere sounded amazing. I hope they allow fans to cheer because you don't really want deadair except for a few claps in a stadium show.

    Multi-man is a basically an auto-skip.

Can we just skip the Ishimori match and cut to Takahashi vs Togo already

Have to wonder what the point of having Naito win the title back so quickly after losing it would be. Feels like they're just bumping his # of reigns up artificially, and even though I'd rather sooner see the EVIL run end, makes me wonder what the point of it was if he loses it back so quick.

Shingo has been opposite Yoshi-Hashi this tour a lot so looks like he might be next in line for a NEVER shot, though they could also go for the winner of the upcoming Nagata vs Suzuki match this week.

All you NEVER Openweight 6-Man Tag Team Title fans are in for a treat. I do like Ibushi, Tanahashi and Wato being together as the uber babyface trio. I think they are the favourites.

They're also running a USA version of the New Japan Cup with their US based talents. Winner gets a shot at Moxley.

The finals of the NEVER Openweight Six Man Tag Title match was pretty awesome. I'm not too into the clapping but the crowd have come up with a unique way to clap to the name syllables so there is that unique atmopshere. YOSHI-HASHI finally getting a tittle belt is a good moment.

What a good day to be in the tacos fanclub.

Was a really good match too. Who'd of thought letting wrestlers just go at it without weird interference angles would result in a match that was fun to watch.

The most amazing thing about that is that YOSHI-HASHI actually made the stupid 6-Man titles more important than Naito & EVIL & Okada make either of the double titles seem to them with how they act and what they say. (And the 6 man tag to win them was significantly better than any Naito match this year)

After an agonizingly dull KOPW tournament, we finally have our 4 people. Yay! Toru Yano, Okada, SANADA and El Desperado. I wonder if this tournament was set up to sneakily get another Okada vs SANADA match but in disguise.

    Re: NJPW Summer Struggle 2020 Tour 26/07 - 29/08

Jingu was such an easy show to sit through. Half the show is done in an hour and the rest of it is a breeze. Perfectly paced show which is rare nowadays for New Japan.

Naito regaining the title is the right choice. The feud itself looks like it was a sucess among LIJ fans too. The matches though..they were rough to sit through. EVIL is just not a good wrestler. Hopefully he doesn't sniff the title again until he makes some strides in the ring. Ishimori looks back to full health after having a rough year. Him winning the Junior title was interesting, but it wasn't totally out of the blue either. This leaves Hiromu open for the G1 hopefully without having the title as an anchor, for a lack of a better word. The KOPW title looks like its not taken seriously all that much and is just a ploy for better houses during the long tours such as this one. Which is fine I guess for the fans in attendance.

    Re: NJPW Summer Struggle 2020 Tour 26/07 - 29/08

I think they got what they needed out of the EVIL reign. If they were going to do it, they had to do it there and they've given him a bit of heat back. His G1 should be interesting. Naito winning was obviously the choice to make and I guess he's heading to WK as the champ.

Shingo and Hiromu dropping their belts is no surprise. They need to free up people as being apparent contenders for the G1 as nobody thinks anyone with a belt is winning. Okada, Tanahashi, Ibushi, SANADA all in with shots too so going to be very interesting.

Liked the pacing of the show and didn't really hate anything on it. Did its job.

I challenge Ed to watch both the Yujiro/Okada handicap match and EVIL/Naito.

Evil was a breath of fresh air in a somewhat stale main event scene imo yes Evil was not really a popular choice and him winning is somewhat similar shocker to Mahal winning but Evil vs. Naito is a story that can be told given the history. Naito though is a great choice for champion
