AEW Dynamite AEW Dynamite On TNT - 10/06/2020

FTR after making their suprise debuts two weeks ago, are about to have their first tag team match in AEW. They go against Butcher and The Blade (The Blade & The Butcher). Keeping with the tag team action, Best Friends along with Orange Cassidy compete in a six man tag match against The Inner Circle (Jake Hager, Ortiz & Santana). In addition to that, Nyla Rose & Penelope Ford team together to take on the New AEW Women's champion, Hikaru Shida and her partner, Kris Statlander. The second week of Cody's open challenge has one of Private Party, Marq Quen challenging Cody for the title on AEW Dynamite. Also Chris Jericho will return back to the commentary booth.

I'm pretty into tonight's show. I think the six man tag is gonna be a lot of fun, and I'm definitely interested in seeing FTR wrestle their first match outside the WWE bubble.

Wonder how far Cody will go this time too. I do think he needs to be up against an opponent who would be a realisitc threat to the title though, no disprespect to Jungle Boy/Quen.
I have a plan so cunning......

I think Jungle Boy was an appropriate opponent, since it's been a goal of theirs to build him up since the start, so a match made sense even if no one would ever buy a win. Marc Quen (who I've only now just realised isn't called Mark Quinn) is pretty out of nowhere like Scorpio Sky and I think, like Sky, they probably won't follow up much on this match.

Also, Jungle Boy must be kinda annoyed he had to win a battle royal for his shot, only for Cody to start this open challenge...

I think the job of the TNT open challenge, much like the US Title open challenge before it, is to elevate others and the belt more than anything. I'm sure they'll throw an appetizing challenger on Cody's lap in a couple weeks, but I expect a lot of in-between matches where he just puts over offense for low-midcard guys like Jungle Boy and Quen and then puts them away. Guys like that still look good just for hanging for Cody.

Same here ha ha. Seems a pretty random choice for a title shot considering he injured himself a few weeks ago.

I'm interested to see how FTR get on against TB & TB. FTR seem to work best when they're in control and the other team sells for a period of time. Not sure if that's TB & TB's forte but it should be good hopefully.

Just finished watching AEW Dark. Looking forward to Dynamite. I'm not huge on the wrestling in AEW atm, I think its more underwhelming than not but theyve got a lot of storylines going and they're always pushing narratives each match, even on Dark. It's interesting even if I feel like the in ring quality needs more work, most matches feel like they matter to varying degrees to me. I didnt really see one match that felt completely pointless.

FTR vs B&B was good. Wasn't sure how I'd be into FTR working babyface but they were good and the match was perfect for what it needed to achieve without just being a competitive squash.

Womens tag was surprisingly good, maybe even the best womens match in AEW to date. Ford feels like a fresh addition to an otherwise stale scene.

6-man was OK. The OC stuff was mostly all good, everything else was pretty ugly. The post-match attack with a sack of oranges was amusing.

Holy shit, Sammy actually won a match on TV!

Moxley/Taz/Cage segment was cool. Once Moxley beats Cage I'd be all in favor of Taz managing other guys going after him.

Cody vs Quen was solid. Not everyone needs to have a star-making performance and take the champ 15+ minutes. This should have been on the shorter, less competitive side to make the matches like those vs JB stand out more. That said, Cody vs Hager gets NO BUYS from me.

Re: AEW Dynamite On TNT - 10/06/2020

Once again, gotta praise AEW for making every segment/match matter. Always stories pushing and moving. Always something interesting happening. 100% personal preference but I think this is how a sports entertainment show should be.

Tag division is insanely stacked. Theres just way too much talent its crazy. That sucks for guys like B&B who are low on the pecking order but actually pretty solid. I almost think they should have a secondary tag team title but I also see why they wouldnt want to add to that weight.

Missed the womens tag Still think theres not enough women matches in a show but hopefully with Monroe & Roll Model feuding now, that'll give more storylines to women each show. They really need to step this up though.

Happy to see Sammy win. Colt's a solid guy & talker but not very thrilling to watch, hope Dark Order can revitalize him.

I like that Taz actually remembered he said he wanted Mox at 100% and tried to get Cage not to seriously hurt Mox. I hope Taz chastizes him even more next show tbh. I think Cage is great & fun to watch but Taz is mega helpful for him.

Cody vs. Quen was good and actually better than Jungle Boy vs. Cody. They should definitely take advantage of the TV time limit at some point.

Solid show. So so so good at keeping stories going. Fans coming back is obviously gonna be a boon but the ringside storytelling is going to be insanely missed. It just adds so many easy opportunities to extend the story. If they could find a non-corny way to keep those elements going, that would be great.

Did Jericho mention Mike Tyson on commentary much btw? Feels like not which would be great. If this Tyson angle was just completely dropped I'd be mucho happy.

Re: AEW Dynamite On TNT - 10/06/2020

Better show this week than last, though even for AEW I'd say this episode was too Inner Circle-heavy. Between Jericho on commentary for half the show (thankfully, he got grating fast), a six man tag, a Sammy single match, and the beatdown at the end, there were IC fingerprints all over this one. Luckily we know they're a diverse and entertaining stable, but this much use of them takes away TV time from other big talent, notably guys like Brodie Lee and Lance Archer who haven't gotten much to chew on.

From a match quality perspective tonight was much improved from last week. The opening tag was really solid and a good introduction to AEW for FTR, with B&B bouncing off them competently and making it look like a good, competitive match. I'll second the notion that the women's tag was one of the best matches for the ladies in AEW yet and gave me the rare spark of excitement for the division. I'd love a title match for Ford and that's where it seems to be going. The six man tag was a bit messy but the beatdown after it was a good story-pushing segment, Sammy and Colt had an unremarkable but inoffensive match with a badly needed win for the Spanish God, and the main event did the job with Cody giving Quen a bit of offense but winning fairly handily.

This has been harped on plenty but AEW continues to bug me with lining up title shots in front of people who've already earned them. We've got another tag title match next week with Best Friends still slated to get their match at Fyter Fest, and now Cody's made a TNT title match with Hager at the same event even though he's supposed to be defending the strap against someone else next week. It comes off really sloppy and as smart as AEW seems to be with their story-telling it's so weird that they continue to trip into this pitfall. There's nothing wrong with giving the tag champs some non-title matches (and in fact it would be better because it puts the outcome in doubt), and in a kayfabe perspective why in the world are the Best Friends content to just sit back and let stuff like this happen? Why would Hager not want Cody next week and instead be happy to wait a few more with other people getting a shot before him? This has quickly become the worst AEW trope.
