    Coronavirus and Wrestling

A hub thread for the COVID-19 stuff more related to the wrestling business. As pro sports around the world start postponing and cancelling their content because of this pandemic, it's inevitable that things are also beginning to affect the wrestling business, particularly as we enter Wrestlemania season.

The big initial blow seems to have come with WWE moving Smackdown to the performance center for tomorrow night with only important personnel in attendance. AEW has been a little quieter on the subject but at the very least Tony Khan has apparently informed talent that they are welcome to stay home for their own safety without risk of losing their job.

From what I'm hearing, AEW's event next week in Rochester has been canceled, but there's talk about moving it to a new location.

This is just so odd. I can't recall anything like this.

People's health will always come first. WWE are just lucky they have the PC they could use (I bet it gets a deep clean afterwards too), where as other companies don't have that luxury to hand.

I would like to think in 2-3 weeks the majority of events would be back to normal but who really knows with this bloody thing.
I have a plan so cunning......

    Re: Coronavirus and Wrestling

OTT Wrestling today cancelled Scrappermania (Starr/Moxley main event) with only 2 days to go after their government put a ban in place of mass gatherings of 100+

wXw cancelled their Mania weekend show. I believe most indies are waiting on Tampa to make a call on this so they can get any money back through insurance.

Here's the update from the Tampa City officials about Mania:
"Right now WrestleMania is out about three weeks," said Hillsborough Commissioner Les Miller during Thursday’s press conference."We came to the conclusion that at this point, we don't want to pull that plug. However we wanted to give it at least a week to see what was going to happen, if WWE was going to do anything at all. If they don't, at that point, I will suggest that we do come together for an emergency meeting to discuss what we do at that particular point in time."
" I have this weird self-esteem issue where I hate myself but still think I’m better than everyone else."

We want to ensure that its close enough to the event when we cancel it that all of those who have already paid money to travel and stay in Tampa but who no longer can won't be able to get full refunds, reducing the economic impact on our local businesses and corporations. Thank you kindly....

The worst of the epidemic in Europe has yet to hit and will likely start in 2-3 weeks so don't get your hopes up. It will probably be May at the earliest that normality is restored.

PWG's Kobe, originally scheduled for March 29th has been postponed.

Although I imagine World War 2 affected pro wrestling, I think it's safe to say that the Coronavirus is creating a historic time in pro wrestling.

A good read about the effect this whole thing could have on WM weekend and the indies.

A call on WrestleMania needs to be made ASAP. With people planning on coming to it from all over the World, make the call to cancel it now, don't wait until days before and then cancel it or do it in an empty arena.

The problem is (as stupid as it sounds right now) money. Vince is still an old school carny at heart and won't back down until forced. At least then he can claim on insurance if it's out of his hands, even though he's got the one company big enough to take the financial hit.

The indy companies are fucked either way.

Yeah, you're right. That carny mentallity/greed will make them hold out until the last possible second.

Going to be a shit show if its cancelled on like the morning of WM and all these people have flown in from across the World, and spent all that money for nothing.

What % do you reckon of wrestlemania crowds is from Europe? 10% maybe? So that will be at least 8000 seats empty with the travel ban.

Well AEW kind of does have that luxury in Jacksonville, which is supposedly what they are going to do. Will be interesting to see how they postpone the Blood and Guts match lmao

    Re: Coronavirus and Wrestling

Something I realised earlier is how AEW may be the worst off of all the "big" US promotions. WWE have the money to cope, and Impact, ROH, MLW and NWA all tape so they at least have a few weeks TV in the bag, plus WWE, Impact and ROH have enough archive stuff to use as filler too. AEW have got the money I guess, but as a new promotion who rely on live TV, they may be the most vulnerable.

It's gonna screw up their momentum coming out of Revolution for sure, and one of the best aspects of their TV is the live audience. Financially they will be fine and they are signed up with TNT for years so a few months of low ratings aren't gonna kill them.

It depends on how long this goes on for, but I wouldn't say they're in trouble in the near future. I don't know what the rights are when it comes to the agreements made with B/R Live or PPV, but AEW could always host the 'TV Debuts' of their pre-Dynamite PPVs. Throw in some interviews to stretch over a few weeks and there could be enough interest from fans that it wouldn't hurt their ratings much.

I trust AEW to at least get some pretty creative material out of this.
