    Otis vs Dolph. Done.

Whilst the WrestleMania match wasn’t good, I think everything that built up to Edge vs Orton was actually quite enjoyable to watch and get invested in.

I dunno how it'd be phrased exactly, but let's call it Hangman vs. The Elite.

Otis vs Dolph managed to make me care about a Dolph Ziggler match in 2020.

This is where I'm at. It's one of the best stories in wrestling that is both rehabbing a character after a failed main event push, and is also coupled with some of the strongest in-ring action in the company.

Otis Vs Ziggler is a nice midcard program, but it's a one dimensional story that has uncomfortable vibes of making fun of people with special needs.

How does it got anything to do with special needs?

You don't see how Otis is presented as being different and socially awkward compared to everyone else around him?

Heavy Machinery has very strong Of Mice and Men connotations where Tucker is more intelligent and and tries his best to protect his strong 'brother' from getting into trouble because he's good natured but his head isn't quite in reality so to speak. It's not quite on the nose as Jesse and Festus was, but the key themes are all there.

The core of the feud is that Otis is a sympathetic character because the heels make fun of him for thinking he could land a girl like Mandy Rose, but the digs are deeper than just 'Otis is fat'. It's his personality and mannerisms too.

I got uncomfortable flashbacks from Jesse and Festus. One of the worst gimmicks of all-time.

As far as Otis' character, I haven't thought of it in that way, but it makes sense. If this is the case, I think it's well done at not demeaning Otis or anyone that wrestles, or specifically loses, to Otis.

This strikes me more of Eve and Zack Ryder. Mandy's going to be by Otis' side and linger on while this quarantine ends, and she's gonna get massive heat when she turns on Otis. Cheating, breaking his heart, something that'll get Mandy over as a heel we know she's capable of being... I can't wait.

Yep, down's syndrome is definitely what Ed meant...

I've literally only seen the Dolph match and the video package before it and it's pretty obvious they're presenting Otis as being a highly functioning, but mentally challenged character based on his mannerisms, actions, how other characters treat him etc. If that's wrong, then man did they do everything to make it appear that way at Mania.

Well, no one said down syndrome for one thing. And Ed laid it out pretty clear. If you are familiar with Of Mice and Men, you would surely see the parallels. Though whether or not it's deliberate is debatable. If you see what Otis posts on social media or how he acts on stuff like Sheamus' Celtic Warrior Workouts, it doesn't seem like his on screen character is a big departure from how he really acts. They just play up the sympathetic aspects of it.

Is the fact that Otis is portrayed as socially awkward a bad thing? Using the Of Mice and Men comparison, that's a brilliant piece of literature. Not saying that WWE writers are John Steinbeck, but it's a long way from, say, Eugene and how he was presented. I don't have an issue with it, some people are socially awkward and dumb. You might even argue its one thing that makes the story so endearing.

Festus, Eugene... if nothing else, WWE has become more sophisticated or subtle. Both instances the gimmick overrode the in-ring work. I don't think this is the case with Otis.

Yeah, I feel this is a good call. If that's the angle they're going with, at least they're doing it with some nuance in this case.

Re: 2020 Feud of the Year Ongoing Discussion

Tonight I watched the entire Riddle/Thatcher program of the two tag matches for the titles, and then the two singles matches between them, and I came away feeling like it's one of the programs of the year for sure. I actually think the singles match they had together was better than the #fightpit because it was more authentic to the wrestlers and their styles (not lets have a submission or KO match in a cage, but we're in WWE so we need to go to the top of the cage for reasons and a random special guest referee). Regardless, every match in this program was good at minimum, it was a creative way to get around the Pete Dunne stranded in England issue, and they couldn't really of booked Thatcher any stronger in his debut. Fantastic program.

Also, you toss in Thatcher's wXw tag match with the Battlearts dudes and WALTER and that guy has a 1.000 batting average this year. Everything is a hit.
