    Coronavirus in European Sport

Thought I would start this to keep track of the events which are still on and likely to be cancelled and to just keep discussion going with all of us sport lovers.

I'll kick off with the PL statement released today.

    https://www.premierleague.com/news/1651836

    Main take away points are:

-Premier League won't return at start of May and is suspended indefinitely
-NHS and most vulnerable to be supported with £20m from top flight
-EFL and National Leagues to be helped with an advance on £125m
-Players are being consulted over a 30 percent wage cut while this is all going on

    Thoughts?

The added delay was no surprise because everyone knew we wouldn't be able to play again in a months time. I think it's great news that the players are taking a pay cut and the league is going to be supporting the leagues below us because of the very real threat that smaller clubs would be on the brink without some help. I don't really get why they're donating to the NHS, sure it's a nice gesture but it isn't the Premier League's place to be funding the NHS, that's the government's place and it was really fucking cheeky of the health secretary this week to be having a pop at footballers, most of which probably do more charity and community work than Matt Hancock's pals in office.

I'll be honest, I am now starting to fear they will void the season. I think it's totally the wrong thing to do and will fuck up English football for the next decade with lawsuits, but I can sense a push here to just write it off as 'life is more important than football', which ok that's true, but why is next season more important than this season.

The more I think about it, the best solution is to void the 20/21 season, or at least some of it (eg league cup) . Then that gives you plenty of time to finish the games from 19/20. There's nothing to lose, from a football perspective, from cancelling the season that hasn't started, rather than the one that is 3/4 through.

It's going to be a nightmare for clubs that don't get the match day revenue, but that will be the case regardless.

Agreed about the NHS donating. Nice gesture, but seems like a political move to go after those on better money. How un-Tory like. Then again, some of the PL clubs are taking the piss by paying full player wages but furloughing other staff so I'm not sure either side really has the moral high ground.

At a bare minimum, get the teams behind on league games up to 29 played so there's at least a level playing field. Otherwise, I'm with Shock. Finish this year when they can, start next season late and bin off he Community Shield, League Cup and any replays for a season to avoid fixture congestion.

100% agree with this. I really can’t understand the calls for the current season to be void and start afresh next season. It just doesn’t seem fair to rub out the efforts of everyone involved more than halfway through the season. It’s the 19/20 season, there’s still 8 months left of 2020. In my book complete this season whenever possible and then look into trying to schedule next season somehow, be it scrapping the league cup and international friendlies, or every team plays each other only once instead of twice. Anything to avoid scrapping the current season.

Did anyone watch the virtual Grand National? I didn't but it is trending on Twitter so figure it was a big deal.

I'm looking forward to the F1 esport race tomorrow night with five of the current grid and Ben Stokes

Liverpool getting a furlough to pay their non-playing staff is disgraceful, haven't they got enough money to pay for that?

Premier League chairman and board members are proving themselves as absolute jokes.

Government should just refuse but they won't.

    Re: Coronavirus in European Sport

On a personal level, given the way my club has decided to handle the coronavirus crisis, I'm completely checking out of football. I haven't missed it as much as other things, and I am frankly embarrassed by what the club have done and become.

Yeah that's pretty shit from the club and they really deserve all the bad press they get from it. Really hope they backtrack on the whole thing.

Liverpool have reversed their decision to furlough their non-playing staff. Good.

The credit they are getting on social media for reversing the decision is ridiculous.

Should never have done it in the first place!

Thank fuck we reversed it. We certainly don’t deserve credit for doing the thing we should have always done.

Go take your anti Liverpool views back to that cesspool you came from Reney :P

That said, they deserve no credit for doing the right thing. I expect this kind of bullshit from Levy or Ashley, but not us. No need for greed in this time

Footballers have launched the #PlayersTogether campaign which will see them all donate large sums of money to the NHS and charities that support the NHS on the frontline.

    Good news all round.

Jordan Henderson has done so much good stuff during all of this. Really proud to have him as the club's captain.

that's not a very nice way to welcome a new member to this forum

Liverpool proving they're still the real scum of the Premier League, nothing surprising tbh
