    Coronavirus and the Entertainment Industry

Felt like it needed it's own separate thread, like the wrestling one.

So far, Sony & Universal have effectively pushed their entire release schedule back to 2021. Next big blockbuster we're waiting to hear from is Tenet which is still set for July

Today, Top Gun 2 got pushed to December. But on the positive side, A Quiet Place 2 has announced a September release date, and the latest Spongebob movie has opted for an optimistic late July release!

Also, the expectation is that Disney will effectively bump their release schedule for MCU back movie-by-movie. So Black Widow will take Eternals November slot, Eternals takes Shang-Chi's February spot, and so forth.

Disney has also pulled their Artemis Fowl movie from theaters and will release it on Disney+ instead.

Mulan has also been given a July release. Again, digging the optimism.

No release date for New Mutants though

I know it was announced a little while back, but as of today the movie Onward from Disney Pixar is now on Disney+. I did want to see that in theater so I’ll have to check that out soon.

It was just in the theater a month ago.

This will just be a US deal. UK, it still has to go through the home release/Sky route first, so it likely won't hit until October/November at best.

Last bit of Disney rescheduling, Jungle Cruise has been pushed to July 2021.

That's gotta royally blow for those involved, by the time it comes out it would have been 3 years since they completed filming.

New Mutants says "hold my beer".

The fact that there's even a movie about the Jungle Cruise ride is hilarious in and of itself. I'm honestly really looking forward to Dwayne doing some hybrid of his Jumanji character in this one.

Re: Coronavirus and the Entertainment Industry

We're seeing a ton of stuff that was nearly finished or already finished getting impacted now, but I think a lot of us are forgetting about the impact this is gonna have down the road for films and shows getting released.

Nobody is filming now. So the tv shows or movies supposed to be released say in the fall are probably all getting pushed back. We might have a gap between around August to January where we have absolutely nothing new released for movies, tv, even video games. Which is gonna be huge because that's such a prime release window for all of those things.

You just know there's gonna be some filmmakers who accept the call once restrictions are lifted and tries to throw a movie together in a month or two just for the sake of artistic challenge (looking at you Clint).

Decent chance there will be a big shortage of blockbusters but someone somehow will get some films out there.

I think if anyone is going to capitalize for sure it's going to be the Netflix types who have the advantage of getting their movie straight to viewing without all the post production hassles that blockbusters going into theaters have to do.

If the release schedules stay as they are, then the cinema won't be too bad. TV is where the effects will really be felt.

We might see a reality TV boom like we did during the writer's strike a decade or so ago. Obviously they aren't making any now cause no one is making anything, but the turnaround time on reality and game shows is a lot quicker so when the networks are scrambling to fill their schedules this Fall they may be quick to greenlight a lot of that while the scripted stuff gets back into the swing of things.

Clint's probably get 3-4 movies in post-production right now.

People that don't watch it aren't suddenly going to start due to a lack of live action content. If you don't like it now, you're not suddenly going be a fan solely because there's a glut of it in the market.

Re: Coronavirus and the Entertainment Industry

I think sports are going to do pretty great as well if the plans of some of these commissioners gets approved. A lot of them looking to do quarantine mini-tournaments. Big 3, UFC, NBA, and I believe I remember them working on something for the EPL as well. I dont doubt there will probably be a shitton of documentaries coming out of that but just in general as well. Esports can still go on as well. OWL is currently active. Twitch will remain prominent. If AAA game development slows down then its perfect time for smaller teams to get their stuff in front of bigger streamer names.

Cartoons are still happening so those will still go out (albeit at a slower rate). I know Fuji said with regards to anime those who dont watch it wont suddenly do it, and I more or less agree, but adult animation has done a pretty solid job of attracting people who arent into cartoons and I think shit like Rick & Morty or the new show by Justin Roiland will thrive even more with less competition out there.

In general I can see cartoons, sports, documentaries & reality TV (and social media in general) being big until live action TV & Film can make its comeback. And I wouldnt be surprised if a random wave of stylistic lower budget films comes out of it as well to take advantage of non-Disney streaming services being a bit desperate for content.

It's already starting. I see ABC is doing a celebrity-centric Who Wants To Be a Millionaire revival this Wednesday. Get something on the air and give those stir-crazy celebs something to do to keep their names in the limelight. Win-win for the biz.
