I really enjoyed Hiromu/Honma, pleasantly surprised. I do love Honma though so I’m a little biased. Ishii/Desperado was fun too.

On paper this is the strongest night of the opening round shows. ZSJ/Ibushi is usually very good at worst. It’ll be interesting to see what Tana can get out of Taichi. Shingo/Sho was one of my favourite matches of last year so I’m really looking forward to that match.

Conversely, the next part of the bracket (bottom right) gives me straight up nightmares. Imagine having to pick a main event out of Yujiro/Goto, Kojima/EVIL, Tenzan/Hashi and Yoh/BUSHI.

It'll be hard to beat Nagata vs. Suzuki.

I'm going to rewatch it, so this is not really a set in stone opinion but I wasn't too into Nagata vs Suzuki honestly. Prolonged back and forth strike exchanges are hit and miss with me, and this was a miss. The selling and all the nuances was actually pretty good, it all left me cold still.

Gonna rewatch it later to see if it was me being a grump or not.

Huh? Every person everyone predicted to win won outside of one that was almost universally regarded as a good surprise and turning point for SHO.

Wish Taguchi had beaten SANADA but so far the tournament's been fine. SHO/Shingo was match of the tournament again. Now it's up to SHO's partner to top him tomorrow against super worker BUSHI.

I haven't watched it yet because I'm just not in the mood for wrestling, but man, Sho getting a win over Shingo might be my biggest 'I wish fans were there' moment of the pandemic so far.

Sho vs Shingo was fantastic! The crowd is usually a factor in these matches but I didn't think the lack of crowd hurt at all. I thought it was better than their BOSJ match that had a crowd.

Okada and Tanahashi seemed to have very low energy in their respective matches. But Nagata brought up his end whereas Taichi failed to. Good win for Taichi but he probably needed a crowd to work off to make his match with Tanahashi work.

Re: NJPW New Japan Cup 2020

Sho/Shingo was very good and was pleasantly surprised by how it didn't go too long - guess this means Ospreay was set to go far in the tournament and Gedo has stuck with the decision to shock eliminate Shingo first round. Took a gander at ZSJ/Ibushi too and it didn't do anything for me.

Hiromu/Yano was dog shit. Yano matches are even more hard to put up with no fans.

Re: NJPW New Japan Cup 2020

    We have our Semi Finals!

SANADA vs EVIL & Okada vs Hiromu. Predictions would lean Okada vs SANADA for the finals.

I believe tomorrow is New Japan's live airing on BS Aashi in the prime time spot. So it's a big show.

I expected Hiromu/Ishii to be better from the reactions and reviews I was reading earlier in the day. Idk, I just thought it was good and didn't sniff how good Sho/Shingo was.

I would agree with this. Nothing has even came close to how good Sho v Shingo was. Everything else has been good but not great territory. Same with Hiromu vs Okada from yesterday's show.

EVIL vs Okada for the finals creates some questions. I can't visualise EVIL vs Naito main eventing Dominion at all but that doesn't mean it's unlikely. Okada vs Naito is very possible, but it's not a definite yes either. The match should be good. EVIL's main event matches aren't usually a hit but I remember the matches with Okada in 2017 were pretty good, the G1 match especially.

Re: NJPW New Japan Cup 2020

The G1 match was good, everything else was below average. EVIL has sucked this tournament and for the majority of the last year. Just what NJPW needed: Another cheating heel.

I'd recommend Ishii/Hiromu but it wasn't great great and it definitely wasn't as good as Sho/Shingo. That D spot really hurt the match IMO and killed it's flow for seemingly no purpose.

Part of me can't help but wish for Okada to win the double titles just because of the meltdown it would create but I can't understand why they keep going to him over and over when he's never been the top star despite a massive push. His matches haven't been what they should have and this new finisher totally sucks. I'm certain Ed could lock on a more convincing submission if given the chance.

Re: NJPW New Japan Cup 2020

Surely if you know your capacity is capped at 3000~ish for Dominion that is just going to sell out regardless as it's the first NJPW fan show in about 4 months, there's no point in running Naito/Okada again? Doing Naito/EVIL doesn't really burn off any big match. I think EVIL's the hot favourite to win tomorrow.

I'll have you know as a kid I could lock in quite a nifty sharpshooter.

He's at least had one at King of Pro Wrestling 2017 against Okada. Back when EVIL showed signs of being good.

Iffy on the final. Not really excited for Okada-Naito so soon and not excited for EVIL-Naito at all despite whatever story they're going to go for there.

lol master wato. it's a meme already. it's dead in the water unless Kawato is realllllllly fucking good.
