Klaus is fucking fantastic and I'm someone who dislikes Christmas. Toy Story 4 would be my choice for BAF though.

Sandler got robbed hard, the adoration for Joker at this level baffles me (especially Phillips over Gerwig for best director), and I too wish Knives Out would have gotten a bit more love though that was always a reach and the screenplay nod is nice anyway.

The rest of the field is pretty much standard to the expectations award season has thusfar. Jojo Rabbit and Marriage Story are my faves of the year so far and I'm glad to see them both well represented. 1917 and Once Upon a Time look to be the favorites thusfar and I won't complain about that yet because I haven't seen 1917 yet and I thought Once Upon a Time was a little short of great but it would be far from the worst BP winner.

I haven't seen it, but perhaps the Academy didn't see anything unique in the 43rd remake of Little Women?

The Joker love makes sense, because the Academy probably won't honour it with anything other than a potential Phoenix nod, so this is their way of showing they're "edgy" without actually bestowing any hardware.

I mean personally I didn't see anything in Phillips' directing that merited a nod over like 20 other directors I saw.

Oh, don't get me wrong, his work on Joker was pedestrian to say the least, but again, I can totally see the Academy wanting to honour his "gritty approach" to filmmaking.

Joker is incredibly overrated, but I'm not surprised.

Joker was great and I hope Phoenix will get the best actor award, even though he almost certainly won't.

Once Upon A Time in Hollywood was a terrible movie that is only well received based on the names involved. I'm not surprised it got a lot of nominations though, but I don't have enough words for how dreadful and boring the film is

I’m not in the Joker is overrated camp, I love it. I just hold Uncut Gems up to a similar standard and consider it better than The Irishman and Once Upon a Time in Hollywood.

Joker was overrated af and Todd Phillips is masquerading as a director.

Lighthouse had two better performances than Joaquin Phoenix while I'm at it.

But in the words of a wise man, this is a local award show and not remotely close to a show about awarding quality work. It's disappointing how much clout it holds but that's probably why the people that get rewarded get rewarded. Gotta maintain the status quo.

Damn this whole thing is disappointing, The Lighthouse is the one movie I really feel got screwed was hoping for more than just Cinematography. I was holding out hope for The Nightingale as well, would have been great to see Jennifer Kent get a nomination.
I've only seen Joker and Irishman from the best picture movies, but Irishman was the same old stuff from Scorsese but longer and Joker was good but didn't deserve any of the nominations except maybe for Phoenix.

Don't rule it out. He's won all the big ones so far and it's not like the Oscars haven't given out the trophy for that role before.

Adams Driver and Sandler would be my choices over Phoenix but with one of those out of the equation and the other pretty much swept under the rug at this point, I'd say it's looking like Joaquin's to lose.

I love Kent, but the Academy just doesn’t give any love to movies like that. Same goes for The Lighthouse, so we should be thankful that it at least got some recognition at all.

I’ll be happy to see anyone other than that hack DiCaprio walk out with the trophy.

I’m in the camp that Uncut Gems got snubbed big time, I would put it as my personal favorite movie of the year and I thought Adam Sandler was phenomenal in it. Knives Out with the snub too, that movie was great.

I like Joker and Once Upon Time in Hollywood though so I’m happy to see them get some recognition, and I wouldn’t mind either one of them or Marriage Story taking home the award for BP.

I feel like this is the academy's way of making up for not nominating Jonathan Pryce for Tomorrow Never Dies.
