All Elite Wrestling AEW On TNT (Homecoming) - 01/01/2020

On a special addition of AEW where AW returns where everything originated, we have a stacked show. The Elite Trio of the Young Bucks and Kenny Omega team with each other against The Lucha Brothers & PAC. The AEW Women's title is defended in a 4-Way involving Britt Baker, Hikaru Shida, Nyla Rose and, of course, the AEW Women's champion, Riho. Winner will defend the title against Kirs Statlander in next week's addition of Dynamite. Cody and Darby Allin compete in a rematch to their Fyter Fest match as well. In additon to those matches, Dustin Rhodes takes on Inner Circle member Sammy Guevara. And Jon Moxley goes 1 v 1 against Trent.

I'll be at this show live! I dug the Cody/Darby Allin match at Fyter Fest so I'm looking forward to this rematch. The rest of the stuff announced seems fun.

Hope you have a blast tonight!

Looking forward to this show, dope video package via their twitter:

I really like the bigger story they're telling with the Elite as the focus of their show, without it feeling like they completely overshadow everyone else in the entire show.

2020 and still having audio issues, a little bit of a yikes. The cold open was good but the show just failed to live up to it. Best match of the night was Dustin/Sammy by far. I really hate the BTE music being used for entrances, but the tease at the end with Page was nice, looking forward to Page and Kenny teaming up again next week. MJF promo was really solid, Shida looked great. All-in-all, it wasn't the worst show ever, but it was just average to good. Next week looks like a really strong line up, and I'm hoping delivers a lot stronger than tonight's show.

Probably because they didn't like the backlash from the fanbase around it.

Dug the venue and how they embrace making these smaller arenas feel unique, really highlights how stale and cold WWE's presentation is in comparison.

Can we all take a minute to talk about how awesome Cody vs Darby was? That was some great pro wrestling. Darby's focus on Cody's shoulder was great stuff and believably made him the aggressor. The tope to the shoulder and double armbar were sweet. Dug the throwback to the first match with the apron coffin drop paying off this time. Wasn't sure about AA's role as coach but it kinda worked. Hell of a way to start off the year though, and I look forward to the inevitable 3rd match.

If they aren't going to actually push Trent as a serious singles guy, they need to stop with having him work competitive, long matches with guys above him. Moxley has been crushing dudes recently and is the #1 contender, he shouldn't be working a competitive match with Trent unless they are serious about pushing him, which they aren't. I blame the guys booking more than the guys wrestling, but there is no need for this to have a bunch of nearfalls and a bunch of time spent with Trent in control of the match. This is one of my biggest bugbears with AEW right now.

I do like that AEW is trying to bring real world incentives like money, a diamond ring, a sports car into character motivations (so much better than 'I want to steal the show!' WWE stuff), it's just a shame they're doing it on an angle where no one could possibly believe Moxley will join the IC. I guess the PPV still isn't until the end of Febs so they are reaching to pad things out as much as they can.

Sammy G is a wonderful douchebag weasel and continues to be my biggest revelation since AEW started. Him doing the shit with the cue cards during the ad break makes me think he is way more switched on than the majority of guys producing stuff behind the scenes. Absurd Canadian Destroyer on the apron aside, the Dustin vs Sammy match was real good, and any other week would have been easy MOTN. Dustin vs Hager has low key been one of the best built up fueds going, and I hope they give them a slot on the Feb PPV with ample time.

Page turning heel and joining the Dark Order feels kinda obvious, but moreso because they've made it logical, and I think could be a good move for both parties.

Wardlow's first match being a cage match against Cody where he'll lose seems like a misstep. They really should have had him squash a few jobbers first to build him up.

Re: AEW On TNT (Homecoming) - 01/01/2020

Looks like my prediction about MJF making Cody fight Wardlow came true. Although it didn't happen on a PPV. We can't win them all now, can we? I dug the Cody vs Darby match. Whereas the first match felt more like a Darby doing his thing, this felt more like a competitive match. Much better for both guys. The Arn Anderson stuff felt shoehorned in like they forgotten he was there and needed to make a point of him being important.

I liked how the Moxley Trent match lead into the next thing and vice versa but they needed to cut that Jericho promo. It's twice where he kinda went on way too long and Moxley looked awkward just standing there being silent like he usually is. The match was decent, albeit overly long and unnecessarily competitive. Maybe they are saving Trent for when they decide to make a midcard title. Didn't care for Guevara vs Dustin though. It was okay and actually had a few neat counters like the scoop slam on the outside. Everything in-between was just not very interesting to watch. The cue card promo gimmick is good though.

Elite Trios matches don't often hit big because they are usually Elite doing things to assume themselves but this felt like a straightforward spotfest. A good main event.

Nobody else going to show love to the women's match as probably the best one yet?

Honestly, thought this was the best AEW show yet, and the little segments to give smaller characters some time was badly needed. Every match served its purpose and/or was really good.

The Dark Order only doing that vignette was also very smart. That is follow up, and it was done well. Taking a step back after the big brawl is smart booking.

Honestly, the only grating part is how often Cody flip flops from "I have no friends" to "Be Elite, Be Be Elite." Make up your mind man

I thought it was a really good show too. Not a bad match or segment on the whole show. Darby looked great. Trent looked great. Sammy looked great. Finally we're getting into the "redemption" phase of this Elite storyline, which I'm guessing will build up until Hangman reveals he's the leader of The Dark Order and sends the whole thing crumpling down. I'm hoping Sabian and Ford taking out Janela leads to Sabian getting on Dynamite pretty regularly. He's a good talent.

Explain how so? I'm not necessarily saying this is a mad statement, but interested why you say that's smart?

Re: AEW On TNT (Homecoming) - 01/01/2020

I like it because after a big segment like that show ender, doing this is a great way to reel it back a bit. You remind the audience of what they did, they gloat about it, and tease that more is coming, and potentially a big bad of the group as well.

If you have Dark Order in the ring or at the show, you have SCU and The Elite all mad and ready to fight. So you either have the faces fight back and beat on them, making Dark Order look weak, or just another essential repeat of the last show, but not too as grand of a scale, or shock value. Neither one of those really help the story, not yet. Plus, The Dark Order are a group you want being in the shadows, given their gimmick. Them being able to step back and plot their next move while The Elite are distracted by their opponent (s) of the night or whatever other quarrel they have, is exactly how it should be.

It's a less is more type approach, a cool down spot to tease what's to come.

I don't know, it seemed off to have them go from a main event angle back to the infomercial skits. None of the babyfaces even mentioned it either unless I missed it. Feels like they should have carried some momentum forward after last week's angle, even if it was just the Elite swearing to get revenge or whatever (which would then tie in to the presumable Page turn), or have the newly DO'd Silver and Reynolds squash some geeks.

Re: AEW On TNT (Homecoming) - 01/01/2020

I honestly think the best thing they could do is abort mission and drop the Dark Order. This gimmick is utter trash and the exact opposite of what they should be doing. Real talk, and everything has defenders, but I haven't seen a single person say they actually like it. On top of it, the talent isn't strong enough to keep going on and on with it, especially if Hangman is joining. Nobody cares and last week's angle was embarrassing.

Agreed with whoever said Jericho's rambling promo needed to be cut. I mostly have really enjoyed his work in and of itself, but again...the optics of it is very bad and I think it was a low point on this week's show.

I thought Cody/Allin was a fantastic tv match between the two best overall performers in the company IMO, and everything else was at least good. A much better effort than the last couple of weeks for sure. Sammy is very good and entertaining and making a case to be one of the best acts on the show.

Re: AEW On TNT (Homecoming) - 01/01/2020

The only faces we know are pissed about it are SCU, who were talking about it before Guevara showed up and cut them off. None of the other faces even cut promos, if I recall correctly. That's not a Dark Order problem, that's an AEW booking problem, which as I think we all can agree, has issues still to work on.

Dropping the story makes no sense. The vignettes they were doing before the big attack were honestly really great; I loved them. There's a lot of potential in this team taking losers and outsiders and making them their puppets. That's a great storyline if they do it right. I'm all for seeing how it plays out. People are quick to slate it because it's so out there, so it's "stupid" or "fake" or whatever. It's no worse than a company acting like wins and losses "matter" in a fake sport where not everyone wrestles the same amount or the same quality of opposition.

The Dark Order segment was perfectly fine with me, and a good follow for the group. I stand by that.

If you separate the stable from storyline as a whole, I agree the storyline itself should have been followed up on better, i.e having a snippet of The Elite saying something about the group. But that's been a continued AEW problem of trying to do too much at once and shifting focus way too much. One week Cody is being attacked by Butcher and the Blade, and they're treated like a huge deal even though we know nothing about them and commentary tells us nothing about them (plus the Allie complete 180 unexplained). Then, without it even happening on Dynamite, we're being told MJF brought them in, and now Cody suddenly needs a partner to face then because he has no one. But here we are a show later and he's helping out The Elite and they're all buddying up to end the show. Or Dustin Rhodes having his arm broken by Hager, but never once going after him, but now last night it starts to get mentioned again. Well why not do something when he comes back instead of doing all the six man tags with Young Bucks?

That is the kind of stuff that's the real problem in AEW, not the group in the masks recruiting the rejects to have strength in numbers and making a mark on the company.

Re: AEW On TNT (Homecoming) - 01/01/2020

I had a blast at the show live! Cody/Darby delivered and was a great way to kick the show off. There was a lot to like about this match. The crowd was hot, there were some big spots that came off awesome live like the Code Red off the top and the reverse suplex off the top, and they played off their first match with the Coffin Drop on the apron and teasing it could go to another time-limit draw. I also liked that Darby was more competitive in this one and was a lot more aggressive, showing his progression as a competitor in this series. The finish didn't come off that well live for me since I couldn't see what Arn was doing on the apron but on replay I really liked it. I don't recall ever seeing a manager call a move and it leading to a finish before. I thought the women's four-way was pretty fun. I liked that the crowd got behind Shida since she is my favorite woman on the AEW roster. It seemed pretty obvious Riho would win but they did a couple of nice teases. Moxley/Trent was a fine match. The little interaction between Moxley and Orange Cassidy was the only thing I remember outside of Moxley winning. I was a little surprised it was as competitive as it was. Dustin Rhodes vs. Sammy Guevara was real solid. It's crazy that Dustin has wrestled in 4 different decades now but he has not lost a step. Sammy G was a great heel. I loved the cue card promo. I also liked how Dustin was going for a groin kick, but then he ended up getting groin kicked by Hager for the finish. The main event between The Elite & Lucha Bros/PAC was really fun spotfest live. There were a lot of nice tag team sequences and big highspots that I couldn't help but pop for being there live.I think my only real issue with the show was that they didn't have the matches on the big screen unless the wrestlers were on the outside and it made me some things, like the finish of Cody/Darby. Outside of that, I thought this was among one of their best AEW Dynamite shows so far.

Re: AEW On TNT (Homecoming) - 01/01/2020

    - Cody/Darby was excellent and feels like there’s still some mileage left for another down the line where maybe Darby eventually the gets the win.

    - Definitely agreed about Trent, Steve. I think it’s just the catch when it comes to the boys being the bookers, you don’t wanna keep jobbing out your buddies but there’s also no room for them in the current uppercard pushes, plus who actually takes Trent seriously anyway while working this bromance gimmick?

    - Agreed Jericho promo went too long, but it didn’t bother me as much as others.

    - Dustin/Guevara was a lot of fun too. I’ve enjoyed Dustin in this AEW run more than I ever cared for Goldust, so I don’t see why he feels the need to pander to Elite marks by participating in this Canadian Destroyer gangbang that’s been going on the last few years, doing an extremely unnecessary one on the apron. In kayfabe, Guevara must have the strongest neck in the business relative to how skinny he is. Apart from that spot and the finish (I’ve always HATED standard pinfalls after a low blow, but at least here you can justify it with Hager’s strength vs Dustin’s age) this was good.

    - I can’t understand a fucking thing Private Party said.

    - The Dark Order needed reeling back in after last week’s disaster. We don’t need to advance things, just keep up their presence so for this week the vignette was enough. The lack of acknowledgement from the babyfaces though? Not good. Essentially no-sold the Dark Order as a group to keep your wits about in case they’ll attack again.

    - I liked parts of the main event but eh...#canadiandestroyergangbang including one that looked like shit between Fenix and Nick Jackson. Favourite part was seeing PAC’s body language, trying his best to actually sell the Destroyer for as long as the other guys would let him before the sprint started up again. Selling Omega’s little “you hit me, I hit you” forearms like death as if he did just take a massive bump on the top of his head.
