Re: 2019-20 NBA Season Discussion Thread

Thinking about it, I don't think an injury makes a title win an asterisk. The Heat's 2012 win isn't asterisked due to D-Rose's injury. I don't think the Raptors have an asterisk title due to Klay and Durant being hurt last year. If you get a pulled hamstring, or if you even get diagnosed, I don't know if that affects the long-term public perception of the win.

If a star chooses to sit it out, then that's different.

But I do think the unique emotional/mental circumstances of COVID-19 can play a role either way. It could make it more special or feel tainted.

The thing is everyone has that same mental hurdle to clear though. Yes the circumstances are different but the playing field is still level and that's why there shouldn't be an asterisk. It literally couldn't be more fair, playing at a neutral site with all the teams having equal "rest" and whatnot.

And yeah if we don't asterisk the Raptors for playing the most gimped-up finals squad maybe of all time, then we don't do it here. Injuries are part of the game regardless. If a player chooses to sit out that's even more their own agency and you couldn't fault the team who beats them because one of their stars didn't want to show up, whether justified or not. You can only play who's in front of you.

There's no such thing as an official asterisk so its what you make of it. If you dont care about the circumstances & a win is a win, then fair enough to you. For me, rarely will you get a pure competition with both teams at their best, and the more an argument someone can make that things would have gone otherwise if certain circumstances hadn't occured (within reason), the more of an asterisk it is. I think it would've been a different story if Raps had faced a healthy GSW (perhaps the same outcome, who can tell). Much like Rockets of 90s will have two nice asterisks for the fact that they won because of MJ's absence. I dont think that takes away from any of their successes though. But its not wrong to point out the surrounding circumstances that facilitated that success.

FTR, the situation with BLM in the U.S. I think is much more predominant on NBA players minds than covid. I think a lot more people would be willing to play if the last 2-3 weeks hadn't happened. And when its so bad some players dont feel comfortable playing, I dont think you can call that mental hurdle the same for everyone. At the very least it certainly isnt the same for the white players as it is for the black players.

Doesn't really pertain to anyone else except myself I suppose but I think the Wilfs purchasing the Wolves from Taylor would be a very good move overall. Taylor has been probably one of the cheapest and most unruly owners the league has these days and I think it would help the team culture overall of they had ownership who at least know how to create a competently competitive team. I certainly hope this becomes a reality.

Oh that's cool. I read about Kevin Garnett possibly rounding up a group to make a bid but it's cool to see the Wilf Family getting in on it. To my knowledge, they also own the Minnesota Rokkr, which is a franchise Call of Duty team. They definitely seem to be bringing more attention to Minnesota so them own the Wolves would be a welcome addition to the NBA.

Speaking of possibly changing ownership, what other teams could benefit from a change in ownership?

Easily the Knicks. Arguably run by the worst owner in the entire league , James Dolan, and his antics in the last few years have been a joke for the league.

I hope the KG group gets it over the Wilf group, but that's mainly because I don't think KG would hold Minneapolis hostage for a new arena, while we already know Wilf will.

Re: 2019-20 NBA Season Discussion Thread

Season came back last night with close wins for the Jazz and Lakers over the Pelicans and Clippers in what were both pretty good games. Fake crowd noise is a little hammy but stops the games from feeling completely emotionless, and otherwise it's NBA basketball.

The bubble has been successful so far with no positive tests coming out of it during the preseason. Tonight the season swings back into full action with most of the teams in the bubble having games. Will the NBA be able to pull this off and get to the point where I have to make a playoff thread?
