Same with nxt, velveteen dream aside i’d Say all the major players were in action last night.

jericho and Seth aren’t the same. Seth is in his prime whereas Jericho is late 40s and hasn’t had a schedule like in years. There’s no way jericho is going to wrestle every week, even though he will be apart of the show every week while he’s champion i’d Imagine.

Why wouldn’t Nyla Vs Rhio to crown the first champion be considered worth saving for a PPV match when you compare it to the other women’s matches we’ve had so far from AEW? I’d say it was the biggest women’s match so far. Hell I’d say it was a bigger deal than running Shayna vs Candice with a 2 week build.
Along with the names EC mentioned, we also didn't see Darby, Orange Cassidy, nor Jungle Express compete either. I know they're not Elite, Mox, or Jericho level names. However, Darby was definitely classed to have a bright future, he immediately got people interested in him and talking, whether good or bad. Orange Cassidy is one of the most 50/50 wrestlers in terms of popularity, and he even became a mainstream meme temporarily. Luchasaurus, I would easily place into the top 5 most over acts in the company at the moment as well.

You're right on the Jericho and Seth thing. My point I was trying to make was though, I don't find it odd having Jericho wrestle on the debut show, in a 6-man tag of all things, I would've found it odd if he wasn't wrestling on this particular show in any capacity (NXT or no NXT).

As for the women, I think their booking proved that they're more self-aware than anything. They could've gone the tournament route here as well, but I think even they know that although the division has had some bright spots, it's been more-so in the negative limelight. A drawn out tournament wouldn't have helped the cause if after 4 PPVs, people were not invested in the division. I think crowning a champion as soon as possible and creating credible challengers, with good title matches, was the best way to move forward with it. The tag team division is in many eyes, the strongest division in the company atm. Instead of beginning the first round of the tournament on the debut episode, they held it off for week 2.

I feel like AEW really stuck to their word and didn't try to counter-program NXT, or worry about what NXT has booked on a week by week basis. They have their own vision about storylines, and who they want to push, and how they're going to do that week by week. As they've said in interviews before, people need to remember that they're not on Wednesdays to counter-program NXT, but NXT is on Wednesdays to counter-program them.

Right you’re not getting my point if you’re bringing up luchasaurus and orange Cassidy as acts they can use in future episodes and it’s the same effect This is about AEW’s big stars who if people on the fence about watching last night they might be swayed by names they recognise like former WWE star Chris Jericho or PAC or the stars of the being the elite YouTube show. There’s an obvious reason why the goofy gimmicks were nowhere to be seen on this debut show and why more trust to draw was given to the more established acts last night.

AEW did stick to their word about not changing things just for nxt. They kept the show to what they had announced in previews weeks before. However, nxt or not they would of still stacked the show with their top names because that’s The right thing to do for a debut episode.

But when they don't have Jericho wrestling, can't they sub in Mox? Or Cody? Or now Hager? They aren't the mainstream stars that Jericho is but they're still recognizable names that could pique interest. Also, just because Jericho isn't wrestling doesn't mean you can't advertise his appearance for a segment, like you do Lesnar or Austin.

Re: The Wednesday Night War Thread

I wouldn't read into the ratings too much. Premier shows always pull in a big ratings, retaining that rating over a prolonged period will be the true test for AEW. We'll see if they're still pulling that sort of number by the turn of the year. My gut says they will be doing a number around the 1m mark by then. Strong, solid start from them however.
I find it hilarious that WWE have always said that this isn't a 'war' and yet they felt the need to make a statement congratulaion AEW and saying "it's a marathon, not a sprint". AEW are also adamant that it isn't a war, but let's face it, there will be a game of one-upsmanship going on, no doubt.

NXT put on a TakeOver-esque show and I don't think it paid off. Brining back Ciampa is huge though and Finn Balor back on NXT is also a big move. I think fully intergrating the Cruiserweight division into the show is a big plus too as there's some top wrestlers in that division that deserve greater exposure than what they're getting on 205 Live.

Looking at both rosters there's a lot I'm not really into with AEW. They do have one of the greatest performers of all time (who is still performing at that level too) headlining their bill however and there are a lot of plusses. But, NXT's roster is much more appealing to me and they have much greater strength in depth too.

It's going to be an interesting watch this Wednesday night fight.

I'd also point out that NXT is WWE's 3rd brand. Looking at the number WWE's number 1 brand, Smackdown, brought in this week (just under 4 million) then they have a ways to go before they're anywhere near competing with WWE.

Re: The Wednesday Night War Thread

Hey guys, thought I would chime in with my thoughts. I watched AEW live and went back to NXT the next day, I think NXT was absolutely the better show, but I thought AEW put in a really solid effort as well. As far as AEW goes, Cody/Sammy was match of the night for me, I loved the fact that there was no commercials in the middle of it, and I think if Sammy got some more character development he could be a top heel in the promotion, because he did a fantastic job here. MJF's promo was great despite the match not being very good at all, I enjoyed the Women's title match despite the botches, and I loved the fact that Kenny Omega came out to stop Nyla Rose's post match attack. The Jake Hager debut was great too, and I love what Jon Moxley is doing with Omega. That match is going to be insane to me considering the fact that I've been anticipating it since it was first announced for All Out.

You're not pointing out anything that everyone doesn't already know. It's the Wednesday Night War thread... AEW vs. NXT. No one is making any grand statements about AEW overtaking WWE here.

I'm not pointing anything out to anyone here, per say, just making the point, as I've seen plenty of hardcore AEW fans make out that last Wednesday is confirmation that AEW have overtaken WWE in popularity.

I think it was a close thing this week, both shows had strengths in different areas, but I'm going to give this week to AEW. The show from start to finish was easier to watch and produced more talking points and I'm more likely to watch it in full next week than I am NXT, which I'm fairly confident I'm just gonna pick a couple matches out of. Might just be the shiny new toy vibe and the excitement and freshness of week 1 will eventually die down, but that has won out over NXT doing the same thing they were doing 18 months ago.

Honestly, I'm strongly against commenting on things you see on social media on the forum. Just because some idiots on Twitter spout off some nonsense doesn't mean it needs to be addressed on here when no one here is saying it. Not coming down hard on you or anything, Tommy, just kinda making a general statement about how that kind of stuff annoys me.

Re: The Wednesday Night War Thread

Good thread and even better opening post dude! *Claps* the fans are the winners for sure.

In line with the nature of the thread. I've got NXT 1 up. I thought their show was outstanding this week. Really enjoyable. AEW was underwhelming to me- I expected a lot more. Jack Swagger did nothing for me and that was essentially the surprise of the night.

To be fair though- technically NXT's first show was a couple of weeks ago and if I compared AEW's first show to that one- I'd have plumped for AEW.

Ratings are no shock to me. New is always going to be the better option so I fully expected them to "win" night one in terms of the viewers. Though I personally don't care about the viewers and all that other stuff- Kudos to AEW for the start they've made. I heard Smackdown had like 4 million viewers or something? I preferred both of these shows to Smackdown and so that shows how little viewership ratings mean to me.

Excited to see what's to come this week! :D

[Wednesday Night Ratings] AEW: 1,018,000 / NXT: 790,000

Trutv numbers were at 122,000 with AEW being on that channel for a time. So rating for AEW more like 1.2

From the sounds of it, it's decent numbers but I have no clue about US tv ratings so you tell me.

Out of both shows, I think NXT had the better match in WALTER vs Kushida but I didn't watch the whole show so I'll refrain from saying which so was better.

Decent second show drop, as expected, but clinging tightly to a million is a good sign for now. I imagine they'll drop below after another show or two but if they can stabilize in that region going forward that'll be great news for AEW.

EDIT: Guess it's also worth noting that both shows were grappling with a fairly large MLB playoff game last night. Good numbers accounting for that.

It may not be a direct correlation, but they did have to compete with two MLB Game 5's last night, where potential viewers may have been tuned in to those instead, if they were fans of the teams playing. Looking ahead to next week, both the ALCS and NLCS (unless Cards or Nats sweep) will be airing on Wednesday, so the numbers may skew a little there as well.

I haven't tuned into NXT yet (doing so later this evening) but I think it'll be hard for it to top the enjoyment I got from AEW's show last night.
