WC Decides: The Greatest Premier League Team - The Left Back

Every Saturday a new thread will be posted and open for the week to discuss the best in that particular position(s). Then I will post the results here before opening up the next position.

    The Team So Far:

    --- Peter Schmeichel ---
    --- Gary Neville ---- John Terry --- Rio Ferdinand ---- x ----
    --- x ---- x --- x ---- x ----
    ---- ---- x ---- x ---- -----

    On to the discussion.

We're partying like it's Euro 2004 with our defence so far, as Englishmen John Terry and Rio Ferdinand joined Gary Neville in the defence. Now we look to round out the backline with the left back position. Much like the right back it's a position

We're back to three votes for this position.

Please vote with your top three Premier League Left Backs in history via PM to me by 5.00PM GMT on Saturday 28th September. E.G:

    1- Aly Cissokho (3 Points)
    2- Alberto Moreno (2 Points)
    3- Mikel Silvestre (1 Point)

Also use this thread to pitch who you think is the best, or who deserves to be in the discussion.

Re: WC Decides: The Greatest Premier League Team - The Left Back

For me this is the easiest decision of any position, even easier than Neville or Schmeichel.

It's Ashley Cole 1st, Evra 2nd, then a toss up for the rest.

Cole has higher peaks than the others, was a top player for longer, super consistent, amazing at the back, amazing going forward. So good that Fergie intentionally moved Ronaldo away from the right wing so he wouldn't have to face Cole. Cole is number one by miles and miles for me.

Evra is second, some distance behind Cole, but still a long way ahead of anyone else.

The interesting discussion will be who comes beneath those guys. Clichy, Dixon, Winterburn, and Baines all come to mind immediately.

    Ashley Cole.

    /thread.

Who I put in 2nd and 3rd is the real debate. Baines for me I'd be so tempted to include for being a FPL beast for years.

I think even though I adore Patrice Evra, I have to go Ashley Cole as the #1.

So that means Patrice will be my #2 and then like many- It's finding a deserving #3.

Two in mind for me are.. Graeme Le Saux & Denis Irwin. Possibly Baines as well.

Cole and Evra are easily the standouts for this one. Irwin is a great option too. Shout outs to guys like Winterburn and Le Saux too.

I'd say left wing will be as easy to call 1st place as this one too.

It’s gunna be Ashley Cole, Evra and then Leighton for me, as tempted as I am for Dummetinho (the god)

Like Ian Harte before him, I’m a sucker for defenders who take free kicks. Leighton has been one of my favourite players for over a decade, and I’ve never got him in Trax because Ed always nicked him.

Also, Ashley Cole may be the only player in this team who has a genuine case for best player of all time in his position. Absolutely incredible player.

Ian Harte! Completely forgot about him. He wouldn’t be making my top 3, but still a good shout. Bit of a weird thing with PL left backs that were good at dead balls; Harte, Riise, Irwin, Baines. No doubt there’s others I’m forgetting.

    Ian Harte! Forgot him completely.

One of my favorite non United players growing up. I really liked Riise too, but neither will be getting in my top 3 sadly.

I like Harte more than most being Irish but he's not on the level of Cashley or Evra.

Re: WC Decides: The Greatest Premier League Team - The Left Back

It's Cole, Evra and Irwin by a stretch for me - order is up for debate.

Cole will obviously top this list but I do think it's closer between the 3 than the votes will indicate - I think Cole has genuinely become a little over-rated recently if I'm honest.

There's a reason why when both Evra and Cole left the PL at the same age and in the same season, that one went onto win league titles in Serie A and the other flopped hard in the same league.

    And he scores goals...!

Re: WC Decides: The Greatest Premier League Team - The Left Back

Thanks to the following voters who chimed in to the greatest left back list: Wolf Beast, Nash, PS, TWG, Sykotic, Baldrick, MC16, Ed, and Shock

    On to the list:

    The Honourable Mentions:

    John Beresford - 1 Point
    Leighton Baines - 4 Points

The left back list is by far the least diverse of our lists. A part of that is because of less voters (grumble grumble …), but also because I think a lot of people had their top 2 pretty much set in stone meaning there wasn’t much wiggle room. Never thought I’d see a Newcastle player getting a vote in a defensive category but there you go! Baines is a class player, and of course an FPL legend so deserves his honourable mention.

    Third Place

    Dennis Irwin - 6 Points

An incredibly underrated and versatile fullback and one of the guys that made that 90s Man Utd side so nasty to play against.

    Second Place

    Patrice Evra - 17 Points

Predictably, Evra picks up the number two spot. One of those defenders that was superb going forward as well as defensively, and a key part of a strong Man Utd defence in the late 00s. There’s no doubt there were times when he was the league’s best left back, but across his whole PL career the voters have decided the next man has him beat ...

    First Place

    Ashley Cole - 26 Points

Not quite a clean sweep for Ashley Cole, but an unsurprising victory for one of the finest fullbacks of the modern era. He was a superb player almost immediately from bursting on to the scene with Arsenal. He was a key part of the Invincibles team. And then for Chelsea he was a superb player for many years under many managers in different systems. For me, he’s the perfect fullback and well worth completing our all-English back four.

    The Team So Far:

    --- Peter Schmeichel ---
-- Gary Neville -- John Terry -- Rio Ferdinand -- Ashley Cole --
    --- x ---- x --- x ---- x ----
    ---- ---- x ---- x ---- -----
