WC Decides: The Greatest Premier League Team - The Right Back

WC Decides: The Greatest Premier League Team - The Right Back

Every Saturday a new thread will be posted and open for the week to discuss the best in that particular position(s). Then I will post the results here before opening up the next position.

    The Team So Far:

    --- Peter Schmeichel ---
    --- x ---- x --- x ---- x ----
    --- x ---- x --- x ---- x ----
    ---- ---- x ---- x ---- -----

    On to the discussion.

Perhaps the positions that has seen the most change over the years. From the solid, dependable defensive players in the early Premier League player, to the more attacking outlet used more primarily for their ability in the opposition half of the pitch. Over the years we’ve seen a shift towards more exciting, forward thinking right backs. Where an absolutely awful defensive player can build himself a pretty decent Premier League career. But what will WC decide?

Please vote with your top three Premier League Right Backs in history via PM to me by 5.00PM GMT on Saturday 14th September. E.G:

    1- Emmanuel Eboue (3 points)
    2- Javier Manquillo (2 points)
    3- Jan Kromkamp (1 point)

Also use this thread to pitch who you think is the best, or who deserves to be in the discussion.

A bit tougher spot as not many RBs come to mind easily. Even LB is a far easier position to choose from. You got Gary Neville, for sure. He comes to mind with longevity being a big factor also. Ivanovic, maybe?

Bosingwa's unibrow is my favourite for this one.

I had three names pretty quickly... although those are the only three ones that jumped into my head

Tough choice at the moment, Dixon could be quite high on my list

G.Neville is probably going to be the popular choice but I'm not 100% convinced as I am a really big fan of Zabaleta.

Very tricky position. Dave, Ivanovic and Lauren also in consideration for me.

Also got Sagna that could be close. Think Neville probably get's the nod for me but the other two places are wide open.

    Neville miles clear for me.

Dixon, Ivanovic and Zabaleta in the group behind him.

Yeah, this one's quite hard if only due to the paucity of options. Neville, Dixon, Lauren, Sagna and Ivanovic are the only names that really stand out as possibilities to me.

With each of these I'll end up involuntarily thinking if any Spurs players could make it in, and the options are... not great. Corluka? Chimbonda? Carr? Paul Stalteri?!

Kyle Walker isn't a bad shout as a third place vote, certainly wouldn't complain too much about that.

Still think people might be sleeping on Dave Azpilicueta, though that may be because he's never had a fixed position in the Chelsea backline. He's been a LB, CB and a RB (not to mention as a wingback)

I was thinking Azpilicueta but the past few years he had been a CB in a 3 mainly. Class player but a victim of mangers putting him in different positions.

Between Neville and Zabs for me. I'm genuinely considering TAA. I know, I know. He hasn't got the service time and loses points for being a red but at the same time I struggle to think of anyone who has been as quality as he has in recent times. I'm not even a massive fan of the guy. Could nick by 3rd place

Well if you want to consider TAA, surely you must consider Kyle Walker too.....

Weakest position by far in PL history. Pretty amazing that there has never been a world-class RB in the PL.

Feel like it's got to be G Nev for longevity as much as anything, Zabs the next best.

    And he scores goals...!

Has to be Gary Neville! Longevity, consistency, passion, leadership.

I honestly don't believe anyone else comes close to be honest with you.

Lauren and Dixon are decent shouts. Zabaleta another good option.

Re: WC Decides: The Greatest Premier League Team - The Right Back

Thanks to the following voters who chimed in to the greatest Right Back list: Baloocha, Order, Baldrick, Wolf Beast, DarkestEarth, DeclanDimi, PS, Deco90, TWG, MC16, Keefmoon and Shock.

    The Honourable Mentions:

    Aaron Wan-Bissaka - 1 Point
    Bacary Sagna - 1 Point
    Cesar Azpilcueta - 1 Point
    Kyle Walker - 1 Point
    Seamus Coleman - 1 Point
    Stephen Carr - 2 Points

A lot of stragglers in the honourable mentions with none of these picking up more than one vote from anyone. It’s clear that the right back is a position that we’ve not been particularly blessed with compared to other positions.

    Third Place:

Branislav Ivanovic, Lauren & Lee Dixon - 5 Points

A three way tie for third place, with three title winners. Lee Dixon was a stellar right back, similar in many ways to Gary Neville - longevity and dependability. Lauren was an important part of the Arsenal invincibles. As for Ivanovic, he was an okay centre back but once he was moved to right back he was an asset to Chelsea for several years.

    Second Place:

    Pablo Zabaleta - 14 Points

Zabaleta takes a well-deserved second place. A legend of Manchester City signed before the takeover but still made up a key part of City’s rise up the league. He could run for days, and was as solid defensively as good as he was going forward.

WC's Premier League Right Back Is ...

    Gary Neville - 36 Points

An absolute stomp by Gary Neville. Out of twelve lists, Gary Neville topped all twelve, a definitive answer for one of the Class of 92. Dependable, underrated going forward, and made a superb partnership with David Beckham on the right hand side of Man Utd - often doing a lot of running for his teammate. With over a decade of good performances to his name, longevity has carried G.Neville to the most decisive victory possible.

    The Team So Far:

    --- Peter Schmeichel ---
    --- Gary Neville ---- x --- x ---- x ----
    --- x ---- x --- x ---- x ----
    ---- ---- x ---- x ---- -----

Next part we’ll be looking for the best Centre Backs in Premier League history. Thread to be posted soon.
