I mean, right? And Marvin Jones is as solid a #2 as you'll find. Golden Tate isnt elite but hes a serviceable one. The defense has never really been awful sans a few years but it's never been great either.

Makes you wonder what could have been if Calvin stayed in the league longer.

Dude retired at the top, that's for sure.

Re: 2019 NFL Season Discussion (100th Year Special!)

Well, for starters, the Lions have never really had a good running game. At one point, they had washed-up Reggie Bush.

The Lions also have never had a good coach. Like, never. Look at the consistently great quarterbacks and most of them have a good coach. Even the ones we know are consistently great will have poor seasons when the coach sucks (such as Rodgers last year or Brees the year Payton was suspended).

The Lions and Stafford also have existed during an era when the NFC is at its strongest of the century. Think back to this century's first decade. From 2001 through 2010, the AFC won the Super Bowl seven times (The NFC won it in 2002 with the Bucs, 2008 with the Giants and 2010 with the Saints). The Matt Hassleback-led Seahawks even made it one year.

Now this decade, in order: Packers, Giants, Ravens, Seahawks, Patriots, Broncos, Patriots, Eagles, Patriots. It's 5-4 AFC and at one point it was 3-1 NFC. The conference has been difficult since Stafford joined the league. In fact, most of the QBs on a "top 10" list have been in this conference. He's had to go against Brees, Mike Vick, Tony Romo, Aaron Rodgers, Dak Prescott, Russell Wilson, Kurt Warner, Cam Newton, and Matt Ryan. Most of the QB-decrepit teams (Dolphins, Jags, Browns, Bills, Jets, Broncos, Bengals) exist in the NFC. Kind of makes Stafford look bad by association/relation since he's going up against slightly superior QBs every week.

The Lions have made the playoffs three times with Stafford. They had to play -- and lost to -- the best Saints team ever (2012 team), the Cowboys, and the Seahawks. It's not like they haven't had any success. They haven't won a division championship because the NFC North is consistently one of the best divisions in the NFL. Look at the other "elite" quarterbacks. Brees plays in the NFC South, which is usually around league average. Brady is in the AFC East and we all know that's a poo platter. Russ Wilson is in the NFC West and that division is more often than not a big pile of shit. Big Ben is in the AFC North, which is usually just a little above league average (because the Browns are terrible usually).

Philip Rivers is in the AFC West and that division is usually just slightly above average. Dak is in the NFC East and that division has on multiple occasions this decade had a 9-7 team win it.

The only quarterback who consistently wins a really difficult division is Rodgers, and saying Stafford sucks because he isn't as good as Rodgers is a little silly.

Stafford also joined a team that went 0-16 the previous season. So his first couple of years were basically forfeited.

If you want a landmark win, it was during his rookie season when he got the first (or second) win while playing hurt. He's a tough-ass dude.

    It's coaching. It's a tough division. It's a tough conference.

If anyone here claims Stafford isn't as good as Eli Manning, then boy do I have a long post for you. Stafford is basically the NFC version of Philip Rivers and the only reason one is viewed higher than the other is because of their surrounding parts and the toughness of their divisions.

TGO, I have to commend you on that post. Incredibly well reasoned and thought out. Good stuff. There are a few points I could counter but overall a very rock solid argument.

Just want to clarify that the Lions never having a good running game comment refers to the team after Barry Sanders retired.

Welp, Mahomes went down and is ruled out. After weeks of dealing with injury issues, not a good sign.

At this point the Pateiots should just join the XFL. More competition there than the AFC.

And do we now consider the Raiders the favorites in the AFC West?

Depends if he's out for the season or not.

But yeah, the AFC is a complete cake walk. Texans are the second best team right now. Ravens are really hit or miss. They have a good record, but I'm not sold on 'em. Bills same.

Several docs on Twitter are saying this:

    Everything will surely be alright.

I mean I know they're not blocking for him, but Flacco is so terrible.

Yeah, Flacco at this point may as well retire or go be a backup somewhere.

The guy has clearly peaked, fallen off, and fell more. He had that one really good post season and SB, and ever since.....Vanished. He was consistent in the post season, but bad in the regular. Reminds me of Nick Foles in that sense. You know, how Foles had some good moments where he really shined - then the majority it was mostly mediocre? But in the post season....For some reason, he just looked great?

Can't wait to see what the next bad QB move for Elway is.
    Everything will surely be alright.

If he's going to employ terrible QBs, he could at least make it interesting. Bring Favre out of retirement, sign Tim Tebow or something.

    What about...................................You know who!

And yeah, I really don't get it. He was a really good QB, yet just can't pick 'em. It reminds me of all those times you see hall of fame players end up as bad coaches or managers, which seems to be pretty common - more so in baseball.
    Everything will surely be alright.

Probably either signing for Foles or trading for Eli. I mean I cant see any other QB unless they try and go for a Bridgewater.

Dude, Foles signed up to be QB1 in Jacksonville and is out for likely the whole year with a broken collar bone.

Also, there is zero chance that Saints trade Bridgewater. With the fact they are still very much a SB potential team this year, and waiting for Brees to come back, they aren't giving away the guy holding down the fort.

Eli is washed, and chasing a bench warmer is the last thing they want to do. Get yourself a career backup or just stick with Moore until he gets back.
    Everything will surely be alright.

I meant Denver this off season though you could trade for Eli this season.

I don't see them getting rid of Foles, to be honest. And after the injury - who knows how great he'll be.

Denver should just draft a QB. There are a solid 4 in the draft this year. I like Herbert the most, personally.
    Everything will surely be alright.

John Clayton is saying that he heard rumblings that the Cleveland front office had brief discussions about firing Freddie Kitchens following the loss to Seattle on Sunday.
