    AEW Top 5 Pre-TV Debut

AEW TOP FIVE | PRE-TELEVISION DEBUT EDITION

Thought it would be interesting to see who comprises everyone's top 5 heading into AEW television. We've managed to get a small sample size of AEW's work throughout the last few months with the 4 shows that they've produced, where they've had given a fair opportunity for some talent to connect with the audience. No need to PM me or anything, this isn't going to be a countdown like Fuji's Fave Five, although perhaps I'll lean towards that format at the end of the year once AEW gets more traction. At the end of 2019, we will revisit the top 5 and see if the addition of television helped your favourites grow on you, or if it allowed someone entirely new to capture your eyes and your heart.

    ---

    MY TOP 5

    ---

    1) Maxwell Jacob Friedman - Through words and through non-verbal actions, easily one of the most entertaining guys on the roster. We haven't had a chance to see a large sample of in-ring work from him, and the thought still lingers in the back of my mind if that's going to be something to hold him back. However for now, MJF takes my heart and my number one spot easily.

    ---

    2) Cody - I'm intrigued to see once tv starts whether he will be able to split the executive role and wrestler role apart. Cody has been apart of some of the best matches, and easily the best storytelling in and out of the ring since AEW has begun. Over the last few months, he has definitely grown on me in a capacity that I didn't expect him to. It helps that he has probably the best theme song out of everyone as well.

    ---

    3) Darby Allin
    - Having never watched Darby until he debuted in AEW, I had no idea what to expect. His presentation has been great, he has great music, and he make it look like he's going to die in the ring every match. A lot of creativity and an easy babyface to get behind. I'm looking forward to seeing how they continue to utilize him.

    ---

    4) PAC
    - PAC has fallen a few notches on my list. Originally would've had him at number 1 or 2, but due to him having to step out of the DON match, nowhere to be found until All Out, and no real last minute build towards the match with Omega either, my excitement for him slightly dwindled. HOWEVER, he's back now, and expected to be available for TV according to Tony Khan (would trust the owner of the company any day of the week). If he's any bit as good as his King of the Cruiserweights stint on 205 Live, he'll easily climb back into my 1/2 spot.

    ---

    5) Jon Moxley
    - He's been nothing short of fantastic since leaving the WWE. His debut was the greatest moment in AEW's short history and his New Japan stint has been great too with great matches and getting over the young lion Shooter. Getting to see a fully motivated, creatively free Moxley on weekly television is sure to be a sight to behold.

    ---

Unfortunately, none of the women on the roster, nor tag teams were able to round out my top 5, just falling short, but we'll see if that changes at the end of 2019.

So WC, who is YOUR AEW TOP 5?

Re: AEW Top 5 Pre-TV Debut

I like this! Hmm.. Mine is as follows:

#1 - Jungle Boy & Lucha = I'm shocked I like this combination. It screams silly and very indy to me and that's not normally something I like but it just works so damn well. Everytime I see Lucha I forget about the mask and the slightly silly name and gimmick and I just see a good wrestler who throws kicks like giant Rob Van Dam. Then you've got Jungle Boy who is a potentially fantastic under dog and he plays his part in the team so well. They combine and compliment each other fantastically. What gives them the edge and makes them my number one pick as well is the fact that I can't watch somehting like this in the WWE, it's been grown and established in AEW and that's why I'm watching.. So I can enjoy the alterternative things that I can't really watch in the WWE that I can enjoy elsewhere. As much as I love say Omega or PAC, I can see people do the exact same in the WWE or on NXT. And Moxley is still just Ambrose to me once the buzz died down.

#2 - MJF = STAR in the making! Absolutely flawless as a promo heel and was easily the best part of every show until the moment he was paired with Cody in this silly friendship story line. I get the turn is going to happen eventually- but he didn't need the extra heat- he was killing it every show and all they've done is slowed him down IMO and that's why he's my second choice, sadly.

#3 - Cody = Has delivered some of the better matches and gives the PPv's much needed emotion and story telling which has been lacking in a lot of the card.

#4 - Hangman Page = Firstly, he deserves credit for the way he's been selling the injury since the incarnation of All Elite Wrestling pretty much. I also like that they're building him up slow and I think he's going to be the face of the company one day. Really want to see him go on a redemption story following the loss Jericho and build his way back up before becoming the next AEW World Champion.

#5 - Lucha Bros & The Young Bucks = Have had great matches and get me on the edge of my seat every time I see them perform. Can't really separate the teams on talent and ability, or what we've seen from either of them at this stage and they've had the best match on the card 2 out 3 times they've been together in the ring I believe.

Re: AEW Top 5 Pre-TV Debut

    Fun idea, dude!

    1 - Riho

I've seen tons of Riho in Tokyo Joshi Pro and she wasn't even on my top 10 favourites in that promotion but she really seems to stand out and stepped up since showing up AEW. Been the highlight of every show she has been apart of except for the Fight For The Fallen show.

    2 - CIMA

Gone under the radar but I've enjoyed his matches. Whether it was a six man tag with Linda and T-Hawk or singles against Omega or Daniels.

    3 - Private Party

A few showcase matches but they knocked it out of the park both times.

    4 - Darby Allin

Probably needs more singles matches to truly get the best out of him but he still has been a highlight with the Cody carry job and three way.

    5 - Dustin

Only one feud but it was great and his performance at Double Or Nothing was easily the best thing that's happened so far

Re: AEW Top 5 Pre-TV Debut

I SWEAR I was just about to post something like this in the AEW general discussion thread. Good call making a thread for it, though. Stick it to Jim that way.

    My top five would be...

    1. MJF - You have to be impressed by him. At this point, I don't think we can really say whether or not he'll be able to go out and have memorable bangers or eventually be on of the in ring aces of the company, but there's little doubt he's the most interesting guy in the company when he gets on the microphone and that alone will carry him a long way. I'm really looking forward to the eventual feud he'll have with Cody.

    2. Cody - Like him or not, he's delivered at every stage so far. His match with Dustin is likely the best match in AEW's short history, he had a great match with Darby that put Darby over really well and positioned him for future success, and he managed to get a lot of people interested in a Shawn Spears match which would have been dismissed by a lot of people I'm sure, if not for the brilliant call to take that sick chair shot. I just hope he's locked in to be a face going forward because it seems like he's been walking a line between face and heel most of the time.

    3. Darby Allin - This kid should have great success in AEW. They're getting him over great so far without even having him win matches. He's so easy to root for as a scrappy underdog, he's willing to lay it all on the line in the ring and he can actually cut a hell of a promo too. As I've been saying the last few days, he could be booked like a Mick Foley or Mikey Whipwreck and ultimately have a huge moment when he's able to pull up a huge upset, if built correctly.

    4. Private Party - Sadly their schtick is so close to the Street Profits, but these guys are a fucking blast in the ring (probably more entertaining than Street Profits in that regard) and since they are mostly unknown prior to coming into AEW, they have a chance to be a heralded AEW "homegrown" act. They should have a bright future.

    5. Luchasaurus - I could take or leave Jungle Boy but it seems pretty damn clear that Luchasaurus has all the potential in the world. I've seen him compared to Kane, but he's really a beast all his own. I mean, no doubt he's way more mobile than Kane, even in his prime, and able to throw some fucking amazing kicks. Watching him on BTE on other things, you can see he's got some good comedic chops and I have no doubt he could execute an intimidating monster character as well. I really hope he reaches the upper card as a singles guy at some point in his career. It would be interesting to see him mix it up with guys like Omega, Moxley and PAC.

Re: AEW Top 5 Pre-TV Debut

    1) Darby - fan of the guy going in, and I think they shoot his vignettes really well. He has more to offer than just being a hardcore wrestler so I hope they move away from that.

    2) Cody - Cody in NJPW I hated But in AEW I kinda dig him. Other than the young bucks tag, Cody has the best hit rate in the company for his matches delivering something good. Rather than have his matches be 30 minutes of finisher kick outs and Hugh spots, he goes the old school route with storytelling and nods to the past, his matches have the best builds.

    3) Moxley - not so much for his work in AEW but he is a star having a great year who will be huge for AEW.

    4) Jericho - amazing character, should be a hoot for TV now he’s the champ. Not much desire to see him wrestle anymore but his promos i’m All in.

    5) Shawn spears - done a great job rehabbing his character. Think he’s a good talker. Would be higher if he beat Cody and signalled there actually was more for him on the brand than being a midcarder and good hand.

I think they’ve done so poorly with the women and that’s reflected in the votes so far.

Re: AEW Top 5 Pre-TV Debut

I'm doing this purely off the back of the Buy-In's FWIW.

    1. Luchasaurus - Enough's been said, cool look and can go. A complete balls up if they fail to find stuff for him to do

    2. Private Party - Never heard of them coming in, but they've made the most of their opportunities and stood out. The tag division is stacked so I don't see a big run for them short term, but if they can keep it up they may force AEW's hand.

    3. Britt Baker - Despite not being in the women's title match, she's got star written all over her so far, and once the Bea feud ia over should easily be a perennial challenger. Potential face of the division.

I'll leave it at three due to pre-show limitations.

Re: AEW Top 5 Pre-TV Debut

These are my top 5 so far, they're not ranked or in any particular order:

    1. MJF - Absolutely incredible talent. He hooked me when he cut that promo on Bret at DoN, that was classic lol. I think he may be the top heel in wrestling right now, he's so entertaining and such a compelling character. He's got that "it" factor all over him and will be a HUGE star in the coming year. I want to see more of his in-ring skills which I know we will once the weekly TV is up and going. I just love this guy, he's gold.

    2. Hangman Adam Page - He's like 3/4 of the way there, he's got a cool gimmick, clever catchphrase and looks great but is still a bit bland. He has future world champion written all over him and could easily be the face of AEW in a couple years, he just needs more experience and more personality. I saw an interview a while back (I think it was Stone Cold, can't quite remember) but he said that back in the Attitude era, the wrestlers were told to just take their normal personality and crank it to 11, that's how their gimmicks got over so well. I feel like Hangman is at a 6 or 7 but once he gets to 11, he'll be amazing. I want to steadily see him improve in the ring and on the mic over the next year.

    3. Cody - He is killing it in AEW right now, I LOVE his matches. He grounds the company by bringing back the storytelling, grit and emotion to wrestling. His matches have been absolutely stunning, I'm so impressed with him and his passion for the business. He's the true MVP and heart of AEW.

    4. Private Party - They're my favorite tag team! They have great atheleticism and are exciting to watch. They do still seem a bit green but I'm so interested to see who they'll feud with in the future.

    5. Kenny Omega - AEW is the first I've ever seen of him. There's something about Kenny that is so magnetic, he has many facets to his characher plus I love his wrestling style and the psychology he brings to his matches. His promo skills are killer plus he's funny when he wants to be. He brings that Japanese/Anime influence that makes him stand out so well. I'm so eager for his feud with Mox, I could see it being a contender for feud of the year.

Re: AEW Top 5 Pre-TV Debut

    1 Young Bucks

After having probably one of my favourite matches of the year against LuchaBros at All Out, they have to be #1. While The Bucks hate has subsided, I still remember everyone HATING them, like, if you mentioned the Bucks you'd either have a bunch of people saying they're the best thing since The Rock found out he could raise one eyebrow, or a bunch of people saying they're killing the business faster than Triple H can fuck a corpse in a Kane mask. I fell out of love with the Bucks in 2018, mainly because of Meltzer overrating them to high heaven, but their matches at Double or Nothing and All Out have really made me fall in love with them again.

    2 LuchaBros

Ditto Young Bucks tbh, if they book a PAC vs Fenix match, has potential to be my kind of match. ALLLLL the flips.

    3 Cody

Not going to go into too much detail, as I'd be repeating everything else people have already said, but he has improved drastically, in the sense in AEW he knows what he's good at. He doesn't need to do the Puro kick out of every finisher, that's what The Bucks & Omega are for. Cody is there for the storyline matches and it works a treat. His match with Spears, while the ending was overbooked to fuck, was awesome up until that point. and I'm buzzing to see his match with Jericho.

    4 Luchasaurus & Jungle Boy

Reminds me of something straight out of CHIKARA and I LOVE IT! I love anything weird, wacky and different, plus I really like Jungle Boy. Totally can see him being pushed down the line as an underdog face, and Luchasaurus is a future star without a doubt. Hope they can slowly be built up as an underdog tag team instead of being handed a title match right off the bat.

    5 Darby Allin

Personally I didn't like the Cody match, because I felt it portrayed him REALLY negatively with him taking really horrible and stupid bumps for no real reason, but I've seen his stuff from PWG & EVOLVE and GOD he's going to be great for AEW. Just please stop booking him in random hardcore matches with Janela & Havoc, I love them both, but Darby needs to working in actual wrestling matches so other people who aren't as familiar with his work outside of AEW don't pigeonhold him as a hardcore guy

Re: AEW Top 5 Pre-TV Debut

    1. Cody Rhodes - Easy pick. No matter what show you look at, Cody's either in the best match, part of the best build or working his ass off to make his match the best built and/or the best on the card. Him and Dustin was an all time classic, him and Darby was a lot of fun to watch, the tag against the Bucks was a good five-to-ten minutes too long but still good and him and Spear was a high point of All Out. If Cody's not on your list here, you're lying to yourself.

    2. Nyla Rose - She's nailing everything. She's got work to do and they aren't making it easy for her but she's made a huge impression on me and kept my attention ever since Double Or Nothing, which was my first introduction to her. She shouldn't be losing like she is but regardless of bad booking, I always look forward to what she brings to the table.

    3. A Boy and His Dinosaur - Specifically Luchasaurus and Jungle Boy, but I have no issue with Marko Stunt's involvement with them; he adds a lot to their entrance for me and he can be fun in small doses. Jungle Boy and Luchasaurus though have superstar potential as a team and when the time is right, a big split and push for both of them could be major money.

    4. SCU - This is actually a shock for me. Anyone who remembers my time as TNA Mod will remember my hatred for Kaz and Daniels and ROH did very little to change that for me. Adding Sky was a start but something about these guys and this SCU gimmick has really turned me around on those two. No matter what, these three men deliver when the camera is on. Jericho said it this week on his podcast, you put SCU in the opener, the middle of the card or the main event and you know that you're in safe hands and you're getting a good match.

    5. Young Bucks & Lucha Bros - This one's a little weird because I don't feel like the matches have delivered to the level they build them up to but they are always fun to watch and no matter what, they've kept me interested and always been a draw for me going into shows whether they're facing each other (which they most often seemed to be) or not.

Also ran - Kenny Omega; he's delivering in-ring but something just isn't clicking. Darby Allin; too much trash wrestling but he's engaging as hell and I'm looking forward to him graduating from the hardcore crew. MJF; not enough wrestling to make the top five for me but like Allin, he's someone I love to watch, and his promo is next level. Hangman Page; handled himself well as the man taking on Jericho for the title and while he's certainly not ready for that belt just yet, he shows signs of it being the case in the future. Chris Jericho; his in-ring work isn't what it used to be but he's still very watchable and a vital piece of the AEW puzzle - I don't know if he's the draw he thinks he is because everyone I know watching AEW would be without him being there and everyone I know that's a Chris Jericho fan and aren't watching are taking a wait-and-see approach to it and are going to "maybe" check-out the TV show before parting with their money for an AEW PPV, but his character acting like he's the reason AEW exists is just more genius heel work from Jericho in my opinion.

Re: AEW Top 5 Pre-TV Debut

#1 - Cody Rhodes - He really brings a big fight feel and I can't wait to see what he brings when it is weekly build for those big storylines that he will no doubt be involved with. Was never really a fan of his until AEW but he has really won me round and bar the Bucks, normally has the best parts of the AEW shows so far.

#2 - MJF - Echo what most people are saying, he looks like he is going to be a star and I am more than happy to watch this growing storyline between Cody & MJF play out. He is always entertaining, funny and has your attention when he is on the screen. It is going to be close between Page and MJF for who will be a bigger break out star in AEW's first year imo.

#3 - Hangman Page - Before AEW, he seemed like the add-on with BTE, kinda there whilst Scurll, Bucks and SCU did their thing. However paying attention to him more, I really have enjoyed what I have seen despite them kinda dropping the ball with him going into AEW All Out. Think he will be big and excited to watch it.

#4 - Lucha Bros - It would seem easy to say the Bucks but despite enjoying all of the Bucks's matches, I find the Lucha Bros must see TV. They could literally walk out and lift their hands in the air and I would be paying attention. I've loved their matches with the Bucks but I can't wait to see what they do next, they could well rise to one of my fave tag teams if they continue having incredible matches with other teams. Them against Jungle Boy & Luchasaurus could be interesting along with SCU.

#5 - PAC - Just beats out Jon Moxley because I am such a huge fan of PAC. If he brings just a small taste of his full "bastard" gimmick, anybody that is expecting Neville from WWE is in for a wild ride. The matches write themselves with PAC because for me, any match with PAC is close to a dream match, imagine a match between him and Darby Allin? Jon Moxley? Or that Page match?

    Just missed out:

Jon Moxley - As someone that only knew his WWE stuff, his post WWE stuff has been a breath of fresh air and must see stuff. Having watched all of the G1, he was one of the stars (bar the obvious two stars of the tournament). Interested to see what he will bring to TV and looking forward to his promos.

Orange Cassidy - The appearances so far, I have loved. I want to know more about this guy!

Bea Priestley, Britt Baker & Riho - Really the only women that have my interest, Britt looks pretty good so far and I'm well versed in Bea but I have really enjoyed all the Riho stuff so far. Kinda hoping AEW sign up Tenille Dashwood, Priscilla Kelly & Mercedes Martinez though

How could the Spooky Pervets be the worst gimmick of the year? It should be gold. At worst, it should be wrestle crap worthy. Something you can enjoy. And yet, it's not. One of the true black marks of AEW so far. Maybe the only one.

Re: AEW Top 5 Pre-TV Debut

It’s not the worst gimmick, it’s just mediocre and very poorly presented. We don’t know anything about their purpose, which is like #1 for a cult gimmick; Evil Uno and the gimps are the least threatening bunch ever, at least Greyson has a new look and appears to be trying; the booking is just so half-arsed that I bet you can give the idea of heel SSB with minions to someone who gives a shit and you might get something decent.

It's apparently something that they were doing for a few years now, you would think they would've sorted out the wrinkles of what works and what doesn't by now.

Hopefully when the TV show comes around, their gimmick would've been tweaked somewhat. I dont know what it is, maybe they need their own segment on the Road To series where they can be properly introduced.

They're not my favourite act on the show but they're definitely not my least favourite acts (huh maybe that should be my next thread). I think the minions are a cool concept, and SSB are very good in the ring. They are definitely missing something though.

They need a backstory I think. And a cooler, spookier entrance maybe.
