Re: WC's Be All...End All...No Holds Barred... Favorite Guitarist List

We break into the top 50 with this group:

    Tied for 50th (78 Points):

Mick Taylor - Rolling Stones/Solo (Mister Miracle)

    Spoiler:

Lou Reed - Velvet Underground/Solo (Baloocha)

    Spoiler:

    Tied for 49th (79 Points):

    Ritchie Valens - Solo (Baloocha)

    Spoiler:

Neal Schon - Santana/Journey/Bad English (OMB, Ms Flock, HoHo, Mister Miracle)

    Spoiler:

    48th (80 Points)

Billy Corgan - Smashing Pumpkins/Zwan/Solo (OMB, Baloocha, Mister Miracle)

    Spoiler:

    47th (82 Points)

George Thorogood - GT & The Destroyers (Baloocha, Mister Miracle)

    Spoiler:

Fun group here to start the top 50. Mick Taylor is my all time favorite Rolling Stone, Sway is his signature song...he left, because he never got credit for writing anything in the Stones. Lou Reed, is hit and miss with me. I had a phase where I loved him, but it's been a long time. Ritchie Valens story is super sad, ended far too early. Neal Schon is a legit prodigy, started with Santana at 17 and from there on he's been rocking. Billy Corgan is underrated in my book, he doesn't really get the press as a guitar player. George has been going a long time and will most likely die doing it. Great showman.

    Today's group will cover 46 to 44:

    46th (83 Points)

Johnny Cash - Solo/The Highwaymen (OMB, Baloocha)

    Spoiler:

    Tied for 45th (84 points)

Nels Cline - Wilco (Mister Miracle)

    Spoiler:

Zakk Wylde - Ozzy/Black Label Society (OMB, Ms Flock, Mister Miracle)

    Spoiler:

    Carl Perkins - Solo (Baloocha)

    Spoiler:

    Tied for 44th (85 Points)

    Del Shannon - Solo (Baloocha)

    Spoiler:

Tom Scholz - Boston (Baloocha, Mister Miracle)

    Spoiler:

Great group here, The Man in Black is one of the great strummers in music. Nels Cline mixes soul and noise together wonderfully. Zakk Wylde has one of the great guitar tones in rock. Del was great in his time. Tom Scholz is the mad inventor, more than just a guitarist. Carl Perkins is one of the great forgotten performers of the 50's/60's.

Re: WC's Be All...End All...No Holds Barred... Favorite Guitarist List

With today's group, we're going to finish the 40's and crack the 30's (43 to 37):

    43rd (87 Points):

    Kenny Loggins - Loggins & Messina/Solo (Baloocha)

    original-squared-kenny-loggins

    Spoiler:

    42nd (88 Points):

Luther Dickinson - North Mississippi Allstars/Black Crowes/Solo (Mister Miracle)

    big-Luther-Dickinson

    Spoiler:

    41st (89 Points):

    Bo Diddley - Solo (Baloocha)

    bd

    Spoiler:

    40th (92 Points):

Bruce Springsteen - Solo (OMB, Baloocha, HoHo)

    boss

    Spoiler:

    39th (93 Points):

John Fogerty - CCR/Solo (Baloocha, Mister Miracle)
    jf

    Spoiler:

    38th (94 Points):

    Bill Haley - Comets (Baloocha)

    bh

    Spoiler:

    37th (95 Points):

Vivian Campbell - Dio/Whitesnake/Def Leppard/Solo (Ms Flock, OMB, Baloocha)

    vivian

    Spoiler:

Loggins is a great singer-songwriter. Luther Dickinson is one of my current favorites, such an amazing player. Bo Diddley was such a game changer with that beat and sound. Bruce Springsteen and John Fogerty are both way better guitarists than you'd think they'd be. Vivian Campbell is one of those perfect bandmates. Bill Haley was one of the first rock stars.

The group just outside the Top 30 (36 to 31):

    36th (96 Points):

    Mean Mary - Solo (Baloocha)

    Spoiler:

    35th (97 Points):

Steve Vai - Frank Zappa/Alcatrazz/David Lee Roth/Whitesnake/Solo (Mister Miracle)

    Spoiler:

    34th (98 Points):

Fast Eddie Clarke - Motorhead/Fastway (Baloocha, Mister Miracle)

    Spoiler:

    33rd (99 Points):

    John 5 - Marilyn Manson/David Lee Roth/Rob Zombie/Solo (Mister Miracle)

    j5

    Spoiler:

    32nd (100 Points):

Ritchie Blackmore - Deep Purple/Rainbow (Baloocha, Mister Miracle)

    Spoiler:

    Tied for 31st (103 Points):

Buddy Holly - The Crickets (OMB, Baloocha)

    Spoiler:

Tony Iommi - Black Sabbath/Solo (Mikk, OMB, Mister Miracle)

    Spoiler:

The group just before the Top 30. I know Mean Mary as a banjo player, but okay. Surprised Steve Vai only got love from me. Super gifted, "the stunt guitarist, or guitar for hire." John 5 is my current favorite player, just does everything so well. Fast Eddie was underrated and was in two super great bands. Blackmore is a phenom, but is probably the biggest asshole on the list. Iommi has the guitar tone of doom. Buddy Holly was so far ahead of his time, if only he'd have lived longer.

He was doing live overdubs in the 50's...which is just mind blowing. True genius...never forget he was 22 when he died. The only comparable talent was and I'm still kicking myself for forgetting him, Eddie Cochran. Eddie was 21 when he died and his output was well over 100 songs recorded.

Re: WC's Be All...End All...No Holds Barred... Favorite Guitarist List

    We've hit the Top 30:

    #30 (108 Points):

    Spoiler:

Nuno Bettencourt - Extreme (Ms Flock, Mister Miracle)

    Spoiler:

The man from Boston via Portugal hit the scene hard in the mid 80's. He soon established himself as one of the best guitarists in the hard rock genre. Extreme quickly rose to fame, but just as quickly fell apart due to internal tension, but they reformed in 2007.

    Tied for 29th (109 Points):

    Spoiler:

Duane Eddy - Solo (Baloocha, Mister Miracle)

    Spoiler:

Whether you call him rock n roll, country or rockabilly, he's the man with the twangy guitar. Duane Eddy was one of the first guitar heroes in music history. Who knew instrumental music could be so good.

    Spoiler:

Steve Miller - Steve Miller Band (Baloocha, Mister Miracle)

    Spoiler:

The man didn't really hit his stride until his 8th album, but when he did...it turned into a decade of multi-platinum selling albums and big hit singles. All that commercial success often overshadowed how good a guitarist he is.

Re: WC's Be All...End All...No Holds Barred... Favorite Guitarist List

We continue on with numbers 28 to 26:

    28th (109 Points):

    Spoiler:

Brian Setzer - Stray Cats/Brian Setzer Orchestra (Ms Flock, Mister Miracle)

    Spoiler:

I'm pretty sure the first time I ever knowingly heard rockabilly it was the Stray Cats and I've loved it ever since. He's a superb guitar player that has had numerous renaissances since the early 80's.

    27th (110 points):

    Spoiler:

Mark Knopfler - Dire Straits/Solo (Baloocha, Mister Miracle)

    Spoiler:

Mark Knopfler's guitar style is that of a jack of all trades, he can rock, he can seduce you with a love song and play acoustically. He's the quiet guitar hero.

    26th (124 Points):

    Spoiler:

Paul Gilbert - Racer X/Mr. Big/Solo (Ms Flock, Mister Miracle #1)

    Spoiler:

Paul Gilbert is my #1 and always will be. He can literally play anything, by anyone and has proven it on countless occasions. He still makes great and challenging music today, still finding ways to progress his guitar playing.

I grew up with the Stray Cats video Stray Cat Strut on a VHS tap that my Dad had filled with videos from MTV and I was obsessed with the BSO album Dirty Boogie in the late 90's

    We venture further with 25 & 24:

    25th (128 Points):

    Spoiler:

Lindsey Buckingham - Fleetwood Mac/Solo (OMB, Mister Miracle)
    lb

    Spoiler:

One of the best finger pickers I've ever seen. I've always loved Lindsey's style. He can rock, pick or not.

    Tied for 24th (130 Points):

    Spoiler:

Bob Dylan - Solo (OMB, Baloocha)
    bob-dylan-portrait-gibson-1961-bw-billboard-1548

    Spoiler:

Dylan is a superb singer songwriter. I can't say I'm real fond of his guitar playing.

    Spoiler:

David Gilmour - Pink Floyd/Solo (Mikk, Baloocha, Mister Miracle)
    dg

    Spoiler:

I've become a bigger David Gilmour and Pink Floyd over time, but it's still limited doses for me. The guy can solo with the best of them.

Re: WC's Be All...End All...No Holds Barred... Favorite Guitarist List

Tonight we get thru 23 to 21:

    23rd (138 Points):

    Spoiler:

Joe Satriani - Solo /Chickenfoot (Ms Flock, Mister Miracle)
    joe-satriani-onstage-630x420

    Spoiler:

He was originally the teacher to a couple of guys on this list (Kirk Hammett & Steve Vai), but then decided he needed to play for himself. He went from a nobody to the premier shredder in the late 80's.

    22nd (150 Points):

    Spoiler:

Randy Rhoads - Ozzy Osbourne (OMB, Mister Miracle)
    randy-rhoads-at-the-cow-palace-during-guitar-solo-daniel-larsen

    Spoiler:

Another Rock n Roll what if? If he didn't die after just two albums with Ozzy, I can only imagine the heights he would've gone to. Such a tragic life for a guy so talented.

    21st (153 Points):

    Spoiler:

Yngwie Malmsteen - Alcatrazz/Solo (Baloocha, Mister Miracle)
    yngwie-malmsteen

    Spoiler:

Feel the rock power that is Yngwie, can you handle it? He probably doesn't think so. The shredder that made neo-classical metal popular in the 80's. He's a lot like his hero, Ritchie Blackmore, both in talent and attitude.

We crack the Top 20 with, 20-18:

    20th (154):

    Spoiler:

Prince - Solo (OMB, HoHo, Mister Miracle)
    prince-live-purple-1985-a-billboard-1548

    Spoiler:

Oh my, the man that could look at an instrument and play it. Prince was a one of a kind talent. Amazing songwriter on top of being a great musician.

    19th (160 Points):

    Spoiler:

Steve Stevens - Billy Idol/Solo (Baloocha, Mister Miracle)
    SS-live-Wayne-Posner-WEB

    Spoiler:

Steve Stevens has been with Billy Idol for about 40 years. They go hand and hand together. He pretty much written all of the great music for Idol. A dynamite guitar player.

    18th (162 Points):

    Spoiler:

Mike Campbell - Mudcrutch/The Heartbreakers/Fleetwood Mac (Baloocha, Mister Miracle)
    mc

    Spoiler:

Our second sideman of today's group, Mike Campbell can do it all. He wrote all the licks for Petty's great lyrics. He was always so happy to play in a great band, he was never one to show off. One of the real nice guys in rock n roll.

Re: WC's Be All...End All...No Holds Barred... Favorite Guitarist List

We're gonna get a little bluesy for 17-15:

    17th (166 Points):

    Spoiler:

Joe Perry - Aerosmith/Joe Perry Project/Hollywood Vampires (Ms Flock, OMB, Mister Miracle)
    joe

    Spoiler:

The man that took over the title of "riff master" from a couple of guys we have yet to get to. Extremely memorable riffs and solos make him great. Even when heavily medicated.

    16th (169 Points):

    Spoiler:

Jeff Beck - Yardbirds/Jeff Beck Group/BBA/Rod Stewart/Solo (Baloocha, Mister Miracle)
    jb

    Spoiler:

My number 3 favorite. I love Jeff Beck, he's had quite the career. Playing with what became a pop band in the Yardbirds, forming his own group that included Rod Stewart and Ronnie Wood and then playing with a number of other great musicians over the years. Doesn't consider himself anything special and would rather work on his cars than play guitar.

    15th (170 points):

    Spoiler:

Stevie Ray Vaughan - Solo (OMB, Ms Flock, Mister Miracle)
    srv

    Spoiler:

Another tragic story, after it looked like he overcame his addictions the helicopter accident happened. He was finally getting respect from the mainstream and was becoming successful. SRV is a players player. Sometimes doing very subtle things that only a musician may pick up on. Got out of older brother Jimmie's shadow by having a completely different style. He's missed.

Re: WC's Be All...End All...No Holds Barred... Favorite Guitarist List

    Today we'll get 14 to 12 done:

    14th (172 Points):

    Spoiler:

Chuck Berry - Solo (Baloocha, OMB, Mister Miracle)
    chuck-berry-hear

    Spoiler:

Well, if Chuck Berry wasn't the guy that started it all, he was close. He did things his way, which both helped and severely hurt his career. Was still active almost to the day he died.

    13th (173 Points):

    Spoiler:

George Harrison - Beatles/Travelling Wilburys/Solo (Baloocha, Grim, OMB, Mister Miracle)
    GH-here-comes-the-sun-solo-735x413

    Spoiler:

The quiet Beatle takes his place on the list. He was a much better songwriter than even given credit for in the Beatles. He just didn't have the personalities Paul and John had and often took a backseat because of that.

    12th (175 Points):

    Spoiler:

Rory Gallagher - Taste/Solo (Baloocha, Mister Miracle)
    Rory-Galagher-2

    Spoiler:

Here's one of the most baffling rock stars of all time to me. Rory Gallagher is as good as anyone on guitar. He was a good singer, a great performer, but never really made it. I don't know if it was because he was from Ireland and it took a long time for anyone from there to break it big, Van Morrison was probably the biggest star until U2 came along. If you like guitar, listen to this man...he's extremely great. He was also a big drinker, which definitely didn't help, but still.
