Its not a Moyes appointment. He's not going to get us relegated. But he's not certain to get us top 4 either. Honestly, maybe this was all Emery was ever going to offer us - two transition seasons where we start to rebuild and just try to maintain status without necessarily really moving forward as a club in terms of results. He's in the 2nd year of a 2 year deal, so Arsenal can move forward in the summer with a new manager without much fuss. And I would be surprised if the next manager isn't Freddie Ljundberg. Not saying that it should be, just that it looks like what the club is lining up.

"I don't know what Emery is trying to do". The ArseCast literally just said that and it sums up how a lot of us feel. Its just confusion over what his tactical intent is.

We aren't a good team off the ball, in terms of our attacking movement. It works out nicely once in awhile, like the 2nd goal where we played as many passes leading to the goal as any Prem goal this season. But more often, our off the ball running is shit and we don't support well, and we lose the ball a lot in part because of this. And when we lose the ball, we aren't very good at getting it back. We don't press very well, despite his claims of what Emery said he wanted us to do. We aren't great at organizing. So there this mindless, disorganized rush to defend without much tactical thought and without real support and without proper tracking of runners. And this seems to be why teams can run at us so easily and why we panic so much. Players make panicked rash decisions because they don't think they have any support coming in... because they typically don't.

We have no tactical basis. Emery's base tactical approach seems to be "adaptive". And as I've said before, that's problematic.

Xhaka is symbolic of what ails Arsenal. He is, in certain ways, a good player. Even a VERY good player. There are few better passers than him in the league, in statistical terms. Touches per match, completion percentage, range, how often the passes are going forward.... those are all among the better in the Prem over the course of a season. But that's almost all he brings. He's not a great athlete, not a great defender, and he's not press resistant. He plays deep, but he's not going to give you the defensive coverage of a true DM. He lacks the athleticism to get forward a lot, and when he does, he's just as likely to get caught out because he's not got the pace to get back. He's rather clumsy in defending, which is why he gives up penalties. When he's on the ball, he can be pressed and pressured and give the ball away, unlike someone like Santi Cazorla or even Mikel Arteta. So he's an above average player in a very specific way but he's needed to do more than that and he simply can't. In that way, he's like Ozil. He keeps getting picked because that passing from deep is rather important with playing out from the back, but without us being set up tactically to retain possession, his role has less impact.
Yeah pretty much impossible to replace. Well.. United gave up being a well run club a couple of seasons ago to be honest with you mate so I'm happy they've finally done something positive and tied down one of the few good players we have.

I think you summed it up pretty well, Papa. I think you're spot on with Emery being a transition manager as well. 2 year deal seems to indicate it was more of a let's see how he does but let's not lock him down in case we've got to move forward and go without him kind of contract. To be honest- that's a smart move I think.

I also noticed with Emery that chops and changes his team a lot. And while it's good to adapt- he seems to switch tactics two or three times in a single game. Has to create confusion.

Very symbolic mate, I agree with you.

Love getting a reminder that no club is "above" having absolutely shit-brained fans.... Robertson got so much abuse on Twitter after giving away a penalty in the Napoli match that he deleted his account. The fuck is wrong with some "fans"?

It's sad really. I do wonder if these footballers will just make their account's private to attempt to stop some of the hassle. Keyboard warriors do have a lot to answer for.

Won't at all be surprised if more and more start doing that. And who can blame them?

At its best, social media is amazing. You get unique interactions you can't have happen in the real world. But at the other end.... its unbelievably toxic in ways that real world is only toxic at times.

I've also seen some supporters write off the offenders as all being "non-domestic supporters"... which is false. Many might be from far corners of the globe, but not all of the abuse is. Again, this is true of every club.

Zero confidence in us getting the win today against West Ham.

Mata & Matic again starting just kills me inside every time. How Fred can't get into that midfield I'll never know.

No Greenwood either, so it means we're down to just Rashford who since the Chelsea game has been fairly poor to be honest. Apparently Mason is ill.

Well.. There we go, another shit performance as expected.

Slow, lethargic, no game plan, no strategy, no philosophy, no urgency and the list goes on.

I'm looking at the board and I'm especially looking at Ed Woodward and laying the blame firmly at his feet but there's no doubt that at this moment in time Ole is putting himself in a position where people are going to lose faith in him with his lack of tactics, lack of philosophy and his management and team selections.

Heading into the Arsenal game, we will be going with one striker and that's 17 year old Mason Greenwood. It's absolutely not good enough and at the end of the day, he allowed Lukaku and Sanchez to go without any replacements because he believed in the youth. The same youth that is on the bench while the likes of Mata & Matic are playing ahead of them.

Embarrassing to be a United fan at the moment and I just see a club dying with no sign of recovery because the board don't care as long as the revenue is coming in and the fans are putting money into their pockets.

The kids will play at Rochdale first. Not sure on the extent of Rashford's injury but I'm hopeful that another week will see Pogba and Martial fit so that'll be a boost.

As for today's game well it was poor right from the start. Rashford looked knackered early on, Mata was nowhere to be seen and Andreas did nothing so there of the front 4 were poor.

With injuries mounting and players badly out of form, now is the time for Ole to show his true character otherwise I'll be heading to the camp that wants him gone before it's too late. I also don't want to see us in another situation where we miss out on a top manager for pissing around. It's already cost us Pep, Klopp and Mourinho in recent times don't let others miss out too.

For the record this is all on Woodward though. Still no DOF type person in place, too many years of poor transfer policy and poor management selection has all contributed to this current situation.

The injury to Rashford will help him and hurt United at the same time. Because Rashford has been run into the ground with playing almost every game for a while now, whilst injured in some cases. So a rest will do him good. But we have no other options other than Greenwood who is 17 and is still physically growing. And our options from even the youth as for who is close to ready for a call up are slim. sigh. Tough times are ahead.

Unfortunately was unable to watch the Arsenal-Villa game, but I was watching True Geordies stream of the Chelsea-Liverpool game and it was brought up quite a bit as they had the Arsenal game on in the background. Sounds like we were in a shitload of trouble until Aubameyang saved our arse again.

I thought the Villa doing a Fulham jokes in the summer were just that, hopeful jokes, but damn they really struggle for results.

Cannot believe the luck involved in that Wolves equalizer.

Utd are so painfully ordinary and Ole has that inevitably doomed look about him in interviews.

    Great win, Arsenal.

    And also... what the fuck?

Typical Arsenal win. Can't just let us be happy with an overall performance, but need to have the supporters wondering how they fuck they put themselves in such a shitty position.

I was driving across the prairies and didn't think streaming the match live was the best idea for a solo driver, so I made do listening to the radio broadcast on the Arsenal app. Gonna watch the highlights shortly.

Every match just convinced me more and more than we have done what we can with Emery. Not "Emery Out". Just figure let him finish the season, unless results really tank, and then spend the summer looking for someone anew. Still can't figure out what he's trying to do with Torreira.

Re: Premier League 2019/2020 Discussion Thread

Terrible performance yesterday from us. Slowest midfield duo in history in the form of Matic and McTominay? Matic has been talking a big game recently saying that Ole has been wrong in benching him. He was given a chance yeaterday and he hasn't delivered. In fact he's proven Ole was absolutely right to not be playing him. So strange that a dynamic midfielder like Fred wasn't given a chance. He's more similar to Pogpa and would have been a more natural replacement. Playing with 2 defense minded midfielders was a big lack of ambition.
I'm also surprised that Mata and Pereira played instead of Chong and Gomes. Pereira is being given chances vut he's proving to be inconsistent so far, bit like Nani.

I'm still firmly behind Ole but he needs to be more ambitious, risky even, with his team selections. He keeps saying that the youngsters are ready, it's time to back up those words now. Forget Matic, Mata, Young. Play Dalot at LB, Gomes, Chong and Fred.

There was so much talk in the summer that we had drawn up a shortlist of people to become our director of football but there's been nothing said about it recently. Wonder what the hell happened to that?
Ed Woodward needs to fucking go, end of. Bring back David Gill.

Our whole squad is just utter shite. Pretty depressing when our most exciting players are Daniel James and Mason Greenwood.

They took a risk getting rid of Lukaku and Sanchez in summer, leaving them so short in terms of attacking players and it's obviously back-fired with the sheer number of injuries. Wonder if they'll panic buy an attacker in January now.

FWIW, I don't think any of our best XI are good enough to get into City or Liverpool's best XI and that's the level we want to be at?! Maybe Pogba gets into Liverpool's midfield at an absolute push - just shows how far behind we truly are.

    And he scores goals...!

Pogba would get into City and Liverpool's team. Under Pep he'd be amazing like he is for France I think. He wouldn't start every game, but not even KDB, Sterling and Aguero play every game for them.

Maguire would make the City squad by default probably.

    After that, slim pickings.

Only two players that would get into either side would be Pogba and one of Maguire or Linedlof to partner VVD or Laporte. Nobody else would get close at the moment.

He'd be a rotation option I think for City yeah - but in their strongest XI is he going to get in ahead of David Silva or KDB? Can't see it personally and one of Rodri or Fernandinho basically have to play by default.

Maguire would probably make City's strongest XI to partner Laporte I guess yeah and he'd probably look like he's worth £80m when surrounded by top quality players tbf but fuck he looks ordinary in an average side - slow, gets his feet muddled up all the time, I thought he could actually play a bit with the ball too based off what I've seen of him with England but nah he just passes sideways to Lindelof and lets him give the ball away instead fs.

Jonny Evans is every bit as good a centre half as anything we have at the club even still, fucking some of the worst business United ever did letting him go.

On current form Matip is better than Magurie & Lindelof - like I'm sure Gomez would start for us but going to struggle to get game time at Liverpool anytime soon.

    And he scores goals...!

Re: Premier League 2019/2020 Discussion Thread

Pogba, at his peak, walks into any side in the world. Not every side accommodates a player of his diverse skillset so that would be an issue, but he's such a force. Its that inconsistency that becomes problematic.

With regard to Maguire passing sideways, PS.... I wonder if that's choice or tactical? Its always a bit odd when players do something like that, especially if it wasn't a habit they had before, which may mean its the manager telling them to do that for some specific reason.

Watched a chunk of the Arsenal-Villa match last night, plus did some reading / listening. I didn't get a good viewing of the 2nd Maitland-Niles yellow. What I saw made it look like a yellow, but they were saying on the ArseCast that he got the ball and tried to avoid the Villa player, then basically got stomped on (not intentional) and that the ref was MILES away. So maybe it was harsh?

Maitland-Niles is pretty openly saying he's not a RB and he's doing his best, even before this. Even once Bellerin is back, he's our #2 and I'm not sure he will get a ton of matches in midfield. I just hope the fans don't turn on him. He's a young player being played out of position.

The Luiz-Sokratis combo is laughs. Something about these two together makes them play notably worse. Luiz waved the wrong leg at the cross for the 2nd Villa goal in the most pathetic manner imaginable, and the Sokratis playacting shit was laughs. Neither are massively reliable, but Sokratis has generally been better than this through most of his time at Arsenal. We need to give other players a shot. Chambers hasn't looked too bad. Holding will hopefully step back in when he's back to healthy, but it could take him awhile to get both form and fitness back.

Speaking of the supporters turning on players.... seems like that is happening with Xhaka. The supporters seem to be turning on him much the same way they did on Mustafi last season. Although emery keeps picking him and will probably give him the captains armband to boot. I've talked about him before - he does certain things well, but not others ,and our midfield problems are the source of many of our defensive problems.
