NXT Takeover Special NXT TakeOver: Toronto - Card & Discussion

    NXT Championship
    2/3 Falls
Adam Cole (c) vs Johnny Gargano

From their epic 2-out-of-3 Falls Match at TakeOver: New York to their unforgettable rematch at TakeOver: XXV, Cole and Gargano have added an incredible new chapter to the NXT record books.

At TakeOver: Toronto, on the eve of SummerSlam, The Panama City Playboy and Johnny Wrestling will reprise their classic duels once more, but this time, it’s with a twist.

With their hostilities showing no signs of slowing down after Cole’s deeply personal verbal attacks on Gargano’s family and friends and Gargano’s fiery retribution, NXT General Manager William Regal has ruled that the two enemies will fight in an NXT Championship 2-out-of-3 Falls rubber match in Toronto. Unlike their duel in New York, however, Cole and Gargano will each get to choose a stipulation for one fall of the match. If the champion and challenger wind up locked in a stalemate after two falls, Regal will decide the stipulation for the third and final fall.

Although it is not yet known which stipulations Cole and Gargano will choose, Regal made clear in his announcement that the rubber match is intended to settle the score once and for all, adding an air of finality to this raging rivalry.

Tune in for the fireworks when TakeOver: Toronto streams live Saturday, Aug. 10, at 7 ET/4 PT, exclusively on the award-winning WWE Network.

    NXT North American Championship
Velveteen Dream (c) vs Pete Dunne vs Roderick Strong

Strong has been hot on Dream’s trail since pinning him in six-man tag team action in June and appeared to be in line for a one-on-one title opportunity until The BruiserWeight reared his head (and snapped Strong’s fingers) in his monumental return to the black-and-gold brand on July 24. With Dunne, a former WWE United Kingdom Champion, making his North American Title aspirations clear to all, NXT General Manager William Regal thought it only fitting to insert him into the picture, paving the road to TakeOver: Toronto’s explosive Triple Threat Match.

It might not be the title opportunity that Strong envisioned, but The Messiah of the Backbreaker no doubt remains mission-focused on helping The Undisputed ERA fulfill its prophecy of being “draped in championship gold.” Dunne, on the other hand, is hungry to capture his first title since losing the WWE U.K. Championship to WALTER in January.

Then there’s the defending champion, Velveteen Dream, who is arguably under the greatest pressure of all. Defending the title against either Strong or Dunne would be a tall task in its own right, but fighting both Superstars in a Triple Threat Match — where there are no disqualifications or count-outs and the champion doesn’t even have to be involved in the decision to lose the title — makes title retention an exceedingly difficult proposition.

Which Superstar will emerge as champion when the dust settles? Tune in to NXT TakeOver: Toronto when it streams live on WWE Network on Saturday, Aug. 10, at 7 ET/4 PT to find out.

Once upon a time, The Queen of Spades ruled the NXT Women’s division with an iron first, viciously snuffing out any and all opposition with the help of her running mates, Marina Shafir & Jessamyn Duke.

Then came The Head Baddie in Charge. Swearing to defend those who need protecting, Yim used Baszler’s own ruthless tactics against The Submission Magician and her foot soldiers, wiping out Shafir & Duke with outside-the-ring-vigilante strikes that not only left the NXT Women’s Champion crying foul, but also in the unfamiliar position of operating without backup.

Baszler has since claimed that The HBIC’s attacks were the actions of a “street rat,” and she intends to turn out Yim’s lights in Toronto. Her disparaging remarks, however, have done little to intimidate Yim: The HBIC told Baszler that she’s bringing a fight for which The Queen of Spades can’t possibly prepare.

Will Yim bring an end to #ShaynaTwoTime’s reign of terror? Or will Baszler prove that Yim is no match for her?

The showdown comes at a pivotal time for The Undisputed ERA, as the controversial quartet marches their way toward a future “draped in championship gold,” a prophecy foretold by Adam Cole at the start of 2019. Since then, Cole has captured the NXT Title from Johnny Gargano, leaving the NXT Tag Team and North American Championships as the only boxes left unchecked.

Fish & O’Reilly plan to do their part at TakeOver: Toronto, but to succeed, they’ll have to make it past the red-hot Street Profits, who, lest Undisputed ERA need reminding, prevailed over not only Fish & O’Reilly, but also The Forgotten Sons and Danny Burch & Oney Lorcan to capture the titles in a Ladder Match at TakeOver: XXV.

Although Dawkins & Ford have arrived on Raw in the wake of their championship triumph, don’t think for one second that The Sultans of Swag have taken their eye off the black-and-gold brand. In accepting Fish & O’Reilly’s challenge on a special edition of Street Talk, The Curse of Greatness borrowed a line from Undisputed ERA, saying he and Ford will leave Toronto as the champions, “and that is undisputed.”

    Candice LeRae vs Io Shiari

LeRae has been searching for payback ever since The Genius of the Sky betrayed her in June. Shirai used a steel chair to obliterate LeRae immediately after Shirai lost to NXT Women’s Champion Shayna Baszler in a Steel Cage Match for the title. Following the attack, Shirai showed no remorse; instead, she’s declared her independence from LeRae — the one Superstar who had Shirai’s back during her war with Baszler and the Horsewomen — and made clear that she doesn’t need, or want, any friends.

But if Shirai thought her lashing would put LeRae in her rear-view mirror, then she’s not familiar with “Tenacious C.” LeRae sent Shirai packing with an ambush on the June 24 edition of NXT. LeRae intended to fight fire with fire, reaching for a chair during the melee, but Shirai escaped before she could receive her comeuppance.

There will be nowhere to run, however, when LeRae and Shirai finally square off at TakeOver: Toronto. Don’t miss this huge grudge match when TakeOver streams live Saturday, Aug. 10, at 7 ET/4 PT, exclusively on the award-winning WWE Network.
Card will be updated with every announced match, and as per the announced stipulations for the induvidual 2/3 falls segments.

    August 10th!

Re: NXT TakeOver: Toronto - Card & Discussion

That main event sounds like my own personal version of hell. Why does Cole/Gargano need 7 falls across 3 Takeover shows. That is going to be another love it or hate it match I can tell.

With the story going on with evil no friends allowed Io Shirai, this has to be the Takeover NXT break their streak and book a 2nd womens match of say Io Vs Candice to go along with the Shayna title defence.

Is there enough time to finish the new prospect tournament before this? would there be room for a final here? preshow for the following week tapings perhaps?

Re: NXT TakeOver: Toronto - Card & Discussion

According to the tapings, the finals will take place on this show.

I don't know if it's because I don't watch NXT anymore but I'm hearing zero buzz for Cole vs Gargano. At least with Gargano vs Ciampa, tons of people enjoyed the matches and the feud in general. But with Cole vs Gargano, absolutely nothing. Ice cold. Totally unsure why they decided to pull the trigger on another match past being lazy and having zero ideas on how to move on. Gargano should be called up after this, he is beyond stale and needs new scenery. Speaking of lazy booking, another 2/3 falls match? And no, the stipulations added doesn't change much either.

The rest of the card should be fine whatever it is. Riddle vs Whoever should be something to watch.

I say so after he mugged him like he stole his girlfriend this week.

Io Shirai vs Candice Kendo Stick Cane Match I need it. Street Profits vs O'Reily/Fish is a lock I think as well for the Tag Titles.

Re: NXT TakeOver: Toronto - Card & Discussion

I am all for a Dain vs. Riddle match I think Killian Dain can go man. I loved his match with Hendry at WCPW PPV #1

I imgine Strong vs. Dream is in the future and Undisputed Era vs Street Profits.

I think Cole goes over too at Takeover maybe even try and recruit Horsewoman too Era and rule over NXT. Whose gonna face Baszler? Maybe Yim? Also looks like Garza Jr. will win this tour.

Shari vs. LaRae could be really good. NXT is getting ready for a turnover and new talent coming in its a great time for NXT

Also I do agree with MC 2 out of 3 falls have been way overdone lately could of done a Ironman Match instead I mean here Coles obsession with losing to Gargano in it is what could make it good but, I agree that 2 out of 3 falls is wearing thin

Re: NXT TakeOver: Toronto - Card & Discussion

I'm probably going to be attending this one, prices for floor and section 100 are reasonably decent. SummerSlam prices are absurd, especially for how shit the card is shaping up to be. This is more like a 3 Stages of Hell match rather than 2/3 Falls, which I'm a fan of. I've seen Gargano live twice, once in his last Smash event, and once for him/Ciampa as DIY vs The Revival in NXT Toronto, both times I left a very happy guy, so I'm expecting more or less the same here even if he's grown stale on everyone.

I honestly would have loved to see WALTER or Keith Lee but unfortunately doesn't seem like either man will be on this show. However, I may attend SMASH vs Progress which has WALTER scheduled to wrestle in the Main Event.

Absolutely sign me up for Riddle versus Dain. Killian Dain vastly underrated for me, highly talented big man. Hopefully get a decent sized push now he's on his own.

Re: NXT TakeOver: Toronto - Card & Discussion

The stage stipulations for the NXT title match have been chosen. Gargano has elected for one fall to be a Street Fight, whilst Cole has decided one fall will be a 'classic, old-school wrestling match.' If necessary, William Regal will announce the third and final stipulation, which will hopefully be 'get these two the fuck away from each other.'

In lighter news, Velveteen Dream vs Pete Dunne vs Roderick Strong has been announced for Takeover, and pre-announced as a MOTY candidate.

Re: NXT TakeOver: Toronto - Card & Discussion

I like Adam Cole, I think he is going to end up being a great NXT Champion. I love Gargano and wish his reign had been better. But man this feud has gone on too long for my taste. I'd rather have seen Cole take the title Mania weekend, held it until Ciampa got back, and then had the conclusion to the Gargano/Ciampa program that we were set to get before the injury. This felt like a pretty poor pay off to what has been one of the best long term stories in wrestling that I have ever seen. Granted the Ciampa injured didn't help. The Dunne/Strong/Dream match feels very out of nowhere to me, granted I didn't watch NXT this week to really see what happened. I think it'll be a fun match. If I had to guess, we're gonna get Baszler vs. Yim. They seem to be doing a nice job building Yim, but I'll be damned if really anyone in that NXT Women's division feels up to the level of Baszler. And that's coming from someone who's wanted to see that title off her for a while now.I'm hoping KUSHIDA makes his Takeover debut on this card. If I were to guess, maybe a Killian Dain match and Street Prophets vs. Undisputed Era(the rightful pairing of Fish and O'Reilly) to round out the card?

If they wanted to torture my soul even more, they'd make the 3rd fall a Ciampa is the special guest referee match just so we get some more Gargano acting and tease that they're gonna do that feud again.

Dunne vs Dream vs Strong.. YES PLEASE! I love that blend.

I'd be totally down to see Roddy Strong as the North American Champion. He's been superb over the last couple of months and since joining the Undisputed Era to be honest.

Cole vs Gargano I'm fine with. I loved there matches before, and I like both! Hoping Cole beats him and then moves on though.

Re: NXT TakeOver: Toronto - Card & Discussion

I haven't even thought about Ciampa as special ref. I don't see that happening though. But the mere thought makes me want to throw up.

I'd say a steel cage match or a ladder match is likely. Is anyone else confused as for why they would set out the match as having the NO DQ match first and then revert to a normal match second. Doesn't that just deescalate the heat of the match? To me, the stipulations should always increase as the match goes, matching the drama the match should have. This just seems backwards.

Dream vs Roddy vs Dunne sounds fine on paper. I don't really care much for triple threat though and they are generally all the same.

I love all 3 of Dunne, Dream, and Strong, so happy to be able to go and see that match live. I really hope the 3rd stipulation is better than Ciampa as a special guest referee. I'm personally not all that into Gargano or Ciampa, so it would kind of be a bummer to me.

would rather have seen Dream vs Strong as a singles, but should be fun anyway. Has Shayna vs Mia Yim been made official yet? What are the odds we also get Io vs Candice on the same card? Seems unlikely but I'd like to see it.
