WCW WCW: In The Danger Zone

    WCW: IN THE DANGER ZONE

    Spoiler:

As StarrCade 1992 approached on the WCW calendar, news of a scandal broke out among the perennial turmoil known as the WCW top brass. As past interviews given by Executive Vice President Bill Watts's were shown to Turner Broadcasting System. They revealed a history of controversial remarks regarding race and seemed to be on the verge of causing a national publicity issue for both Turner Broadcasting and World Championship Wrestling. It was decided that action needed to be taken to remove Bill Watts from his position before this became a problem.

The position was temporarily filled by former booker Ole Anderson while the company would search for a long-term replacement to take the reigns of the company. The top contenders for the position were considered to be announcers Jim Ross and Tony Schiavone due to their tenure and knowledge of the product. Another announcer, Eric Bischoff, with less experience in the company and in the wrestling industry as a whole sought to jump ahead in line by going directly to TBS executive Bill Shaw to apply for the position. Bischoff, however, was walked away from the company to WWF when informed that someone else had already come to see Shaw who was interested in the position.

The 27-year-old wrestling manager, Paul Heyman had quite the resume that impressed the heads of Turner Broadcasting. Having been the protege of successful booker Eddie Gilbert in Continental Wrestling Federation and experience as a head booker, television producer, and writer in Windy City Wrestling. He seemed to have the vision to launch World Championship Wrestling to the next level, expand the reach of the company into the North East market, and turn a profit for the company for the first time since being purchased by Turner. Also, there are rumors that Paul Heyman had a potential legal case in the works against the company regarding some anti-Semitic remarks made by Bill Watts.

Regardless of what really happened, it was official,
after StarrCade 1992 took place, the new Executive Vice President of WCW would be Paul Heyman, known on television as Paul E. Dangerously, and as Heyman now looks to make his mark on professional wrestling, there is one thing for certain. World Championship Wrestling now more than ever is in the danger zone.

Oh. Well this looks fascinating. Heyman getting the reins to run WCW isn't an idea I think has been explored before, so there'll be plenty of curiousity in this project. I wonder if we'll see some ideas that would later surface in ECW in real life be brought to the fold in some form or fashion. Looking forward to seeing what you bring to the table, LT.

This era of wrestling is really hard for me to get into, but if Heyman running WCW is anything like Heyman running ECW, I'm intrigued. You've got a reader in me!

Re: WCW: In The Danger Zone

Very cool project idea. Heyman running WCW in 1992 is fascinating and I just listened to an interview from around mid 92 with Heyman and Wade Keller where Heyman is calling Austin the future of pro wrestling, so I’m really curious as to where you go with that (especially since they are paired together at this time)

I do hope we get the Hollywood Blondes though!

    its a crazy roster too

    best of luck!

Very interested in this, something new around here. The big thing I'm looking for here is booking that fits the timeline, and not straight into modern time booking. Not a lot of wrestling from the top stars on TV, only really squash matches for them, etc.

Also, World Title reigns for Vader and Are Anderson.

Having issues with the formatting of my posts at the moment so not sure how this one will go. Just wanted to let you know that I had completely forgotten how epic the talent for WCW was at this time.Possibilities are endless and I have my fingers crossed for a Big Van Vader epic title reign.Good luck with this, sir.

Re: WCW: In The Danger Zone

Obviously after my first BTB this is an era I'm really in to, so you 100% have my interest good sir. Love the twist with Paul E as well.

My only hope is that you are patient with your pushes. This roster is stacked, but I don't really wanna see Austin or Pillman in the main event for a few years, really. You can do so much with the likes of Sting, Vader, Steamboat and (if you follow reality) Flair in a few months, those young guys can bubble underneath for a while til they're good to go.

But yeah, I'm totally on board for this one, very excited for it.
