Re: Lio Rush has heat on him again

Sorry, I'm with Indy and Jon on this one.

"The way it's always been done" is very regressive thinking and behaviour. And I've always hated the idea of guys getting depushed or punished on TV for stupid old-school carny reasons. It's a multi-million dollar business with several share and stake holders, it should base those decisions around legitimate business reasons, not because someone didn't carry someone's bags or shake someone's hand.

Re: Lio Rush has heat on him again

Pretty sure the story mentioned that Drake Maverick was in the same position as Lio and did everything that Lio is complaining about. So the 5 year comment doesn't hold up as much as it should.

That being said sometimes traditions should die and quite frankly, the tradition of carrying of a vets back or being expected to get them coffee is one of them. Offering to do so out of your own free will is one thing, being expected to do so is something very different.

As for Rush, I wanna see the guy do well but like Ed said, he's a time bomb. Dude had a bad rep on his back before he joined the company and still hasn't shaken it off

The crazy thing is....he doesnt even care. He went to an outside media outlet and voiced his opinion. I give him credit for that. If his cathphrases are on shirts, he should be paid royalties for that.

If he gets axed, he likely find work right away anyway. He knows it. Him saying it looks bad for a black man to be carrying someone elses bag was an interesting development and puts WWE in tight situation.

That old school mentality and traditions have to go.

Good point on the doing it vs being expected to it.

I agree with Lio on the payments issue. There's no way this company with the money they make (including dirty Saudi money) should be making the wrestlers pay for their own travel and hotel expenses anymore when they are on the road every week to do their job. The notion that someone on the main roster is struggling to make ends meet is an eye opener. That's the old tradition in this story that should be changing. It also seems barmy that he's not getting any % of merch money when it's his mic work that made Lashley even remotely interesting and has his catchphrase on!

The story about carrying bags and water is not really that big a deal, it's not even close to a hazing/bullying thing, it's something that most people in that position just do because it's a way of showing respect to the veteran wrestlers and a way of keeping you grounded after getting this massive opportunity. It's also making things easier for those wrestlers with 20 years on the clock as opposed to 5 years. I see it the same way as the rookies in any promotion being expected to help set up the ring; little duties that show you're a team player and work hard. Like others have said, it's commonplace in other sports and Lio has it a lot better than a young boy in Japan if we want to keep it in line with pro wrestling.

It still amazes me that WWE haven't been called out more for their "independant contractor" bullshit. The fact that these guys are expected to be employees in every single form aside from legally is ridiculous. No way should they have to pay for all their expenses out their back pockets (and be considered grateful for the opportunity too).

Gonna agree with Ed on both counts. Its complete bullshit that the WWE is paying talent like this. This is a massive corporation making significant profit, throwing away any remaining morality to take $50,000,000 blood money bags from Saudi Arabia on a regular basis to make their bottom line look prettier, but they still make their talent pay for their own travel, and then don't pay them enough to cover those costs. That's TNA-level embarrassing shit.

also agree that what he was being asked to do wasn't hazing and its not a big deal. Its a small thing to show respect, which is a theme seen in a ton of little traditions in the wrestling business. Taking a stand against it on any sort of moral grounds would resonate significantly more if it wasn't by someone who has a pretty nice history of doing disrespectful, shitty things.

Re: Lio Rush has heat on him again

It's sad to think that Rush may leave WWE stemming from this heat he seemingly constantly had on him. He does make some good and fair points on some of the issues he comments on, but then he also makes some ridiculous points too.
He's a huge talent though and ice hate to see him leave. He has the potential to be a too star in WWE, amazing in the ring, has proven to be excellent on the mic too. Given his age too he could be a player for many years for the company. He was would be a loss if he was to leave.

WWE wouldn't dare let him go and risk him signing with AEW.
