Just as long as it isn't Mauro you could pick anyone.

Totally agree with you, bro. Even though he is Italian, Mauro is super cringe. Calling pro wrestling is definitely not his strong suit. He should be nominated for worst commentator of the year if there is such award.

Mauro hate still seems weird to me and not hip anymore. This is a guy everyone was saying “oh my god he’s the best” and everyone’s turned on him. Yeah, he’s over the top and his one liners get more and more ridiculous but I don’t know any other commentator that has genuine passion than he does for what he’s watching, has good knowledge hidden underneath his lines, and actually feels honored to be there. Maybe it was his documentary that did it but I have nothing but admiration for the guy.

I’m not going to drive him home for this, but I prefer him to Vic Joseph and Tom Phillips, who both I like but just still feel like bot copies of the unexciting main roster style of presentation.

I still think we need to give Excalibur one year of this Leonardo DiCaprio style. He really kept me through a lot of exhausting Highspot shows recently and there’s a reason he’s gaining more profile.

Also if anyone deserves a worst award it’s Renee Young. Or Denver Colorado.

The thing with Mauro is you have to weigh his genuine passion and excitement up against how cringeworthy his actual comments are.

Renee Young is the absolute worst though, beyond terrible.

Mauro only bothers me when the line he's trying to get in takes place over the course of like five moves. You know, like when he's making an outrageously long simile.

I'll back Nicky on Team Mauro here. I'm not about to call him the GOAT but I feel like he's everything I wish the main roster announcing would have since the turn of the century. He sells excitement about the product by being excited himself. No one else on the roster has half the infliction that JR did on his legendary calls except for Mauro. If Taker threw Mankind off the cell today, Mauro is the only WWE guy who could deliver a call worthy of the moment. On top of that he actually knows his shit. He pushes storylines, he explains the logic for each guy in the ring, and he knows which moves are which. So on top of bringing energy to the call, he also calls matches *correctly* which is lost on the main roster with three man booths who bicker over each other, forget to call the match at hand, call moves incorrectly, and can't be bothered to make anything sound important.

Yeah yeah, he says some mega cornball shit. He has a pop culture reference quota he tries to hit every night. But I appreciate that he's at least trying to call a WWE match the way they're supposed to be called. One of the many reasons NXT is a far superior product to the main roster.

Mauro isn’t my favorite by far but he’s def not the worst. I just feel bad for Renee she’s clearly in a spot she’s not comfortable in nor wanted to be in. I like Aiden English quite a bit and he’ll probably get my vote.

Totally agreed. Mauro regardless of how cringy he can be is the only one you can count on to put over big moments properly. I feel like that's a huge issue today in that the typical commentary style in WWE is so dry and they fail to put over big moments adequately.

Re: 2019 Commentator of the Year Ongoing Discussion

I will agree that Mauro's big advantage over the rest of the WWE commentators is that he genuinely sounds like he cares.

That said the guy is obnoxious and a try hard. We all bashed Tenay and West 12 years ago for being overly enthusiastic too, same with Joey Styles, it's not a hip or new criticism. I want my wrestling commentators to fundamentally do a few things:

    A) care about the product
    B) put over the wrestlers and the story, while also masking any flaws
    C) not be distracting or try and get themselves over constantly.

Mauro is excellent at A, ok at B, and as bad as heel Michael Cole at C.

Re: 2019 Commentator of the Year Ongoing Discussion

In a company that uses Renee Young every week and has just started using Sam Roberts on Main Event, Mauro is by far the worst commentator in the company. Mauro at least understands what his role is, to call matches and moves, put over the story that's being told and sound enthusiastic at the product he's watching. No bickering with his co-workers is a big plus too. He basically has one flaw, but as I find ironic humour in his terrible references, I don't hate it as much as others. At least Mauro has a personality unlike the clones WWE produces like Percy Watson, Bryon Saxton, Tom Phillips, Vic Joseph, or Corey Graves doing an impression of a heel commentator from 20 years ago.

The one thing I think ROH have over any other company is their commentary. Ian and Colt are a great duo on commentary.

Yeah Ian Riccaboni is very good. Colt can be hit or miss but works well with Ian.

That's good to know, because Kelly and Corino were definitely a factor in me abandoning ROH.

I have noticed new guys to the team win this mostly or the cool pic Vic is a solid choice but to say Mauro sucks is not true you can tell the guy loves this. I respect that he brings life into matches.

I’ve been Team Mauro since day one, I enjoy his passion and love for the business. I love how he gets so into matches when calling them, makes them feel big and important. His pop culture references don’t even bother me either tbh that’s probably because I’m a sucker for random pop culture references, and I love how he responds to people on Twitter when coming to him about their mental health issues.

I don’t even mind Renee all that much either. To me, Graves is the worst and probably my least favorite. I do like Tom Phillips and Vic Joseph too, Nigel is the best heel commentator they have and I enjoy his work on all the shows he’s on. Percy and Aiden aren’t even that bad tbh, I enjoy their work.

Mauro is very obnoxious to the point where you're too busy being annoyed by him and his constant references and catchphrases to properly concentrate on the matches.

I think Vic Joseph is a great shout for this. Keeps it simple but makes the match an enjoyable experience too.
