    The Netflix Thread!

So, thought i'd start up a Netflix thread in the hope of finding some hidden gems and also for recommendations on whats good to watch.

Obviously there is going to be some differences between the services in different countries but hopefully there'll be some decent stuff on both.

    Below is what i've watched recently and a little rating on them;

    The Highwaymen - 8/10
The story of how the end came for Bonnie & Clyde from the perspective of the officers who gunned them down in the form of Kevin Costner and Woody Harrelson, very good supporting cast too with the likes of Cathy Bates

    Santa Clarita Diet - 7/10
3rd series has just dropped and its as good as the previous 2

    Star Trek: Discovery - 8/10
For someone who hasn't really ever watch any of the Star Trek shows, this is really good and has kept me watching

So, whats everyone else been watching?

    Re: The Netflix Thread!

Finished Love, Death and Robots the other night, that's a cool easy way to kill 10 minutes at a time.

Watched Triple Frontier tonight, which was fine if not slightly disappointing considering the talent on screen and directing.

Probably gonna start that new Ricky Gervais series shortly as heard loads of good things about it and the trailer got a couple of laughs.

    Re: The Netflix Thread!

I REALLY enjoyed Love, Death & Robots. Just randomly started watching it one night, not realizing how short each episode was. Great stuff.

I'm on Episode 8 of Narcos Mexico. Just finished Season 4 of Club of Crows, so I guess I'm on a kick for Mexican shows lol

I mean right off the top of my head two Shows/Movies feel people should check out for sure on Netflix so you can binge is Umbrella Academy, Devilman Crybaby, Mob Psycho 100, Apostle, Castlevania, Outlaw King just to name a bunch. I'm in the process of starting Russian Doll and The Chilling Adventures Of Sabrina, but I might need to take my time on that trying to squeeze in a new Kamen Rider Series Walkthrough.

Bojack Horseman - Absolute banger. Very layered. Excellent writing. Really cool concept episodes. Funny but probably more depressing. Will Arnett, Alison Brie, Amy Sedaris, Aaron Paul and lots of great side characters and guest stars.

Disenchantment - Eh, it's also a banger. Not as good as Futurama but shares a lot of the elements at far as humor and animation. Eric Andre as Luci is fire.

Friends From College - Haven't watched the second season yet but the first was pretty solid. Kind of like a more somber version of Friends or HIMYM.

GLOW - One of the best, if not the best, wrestling themed shows ever. The acting is really good, the storyline is solid and the whole aesthetic of the show is pretty solid.

After Life is good but it's standard Gervais not quite hitting the heights of Office and Extras. Same old faces in the cast, the digs at Christianity and fat people,

    Spoiler:

the predictable happy ending where he turns a corner in the final episode

I'm currently watching B99 Season 5 after it finally got added.

    Re: The Netflix Thread!

Any footy fans who don't mind subtitles, check out Club of Crows. Its a Netflix series about a football club in Mexico. VERY well done. Their first Spanish-language show, apparently. Its honestly more about the family drama of owning the club, and its halfway between a drama and a comedy. Some absolutely absurd moments. And it does tie in with real game in Mexico in some rather clever ways, even if the club its based around is fictional.

I Think You Should Leave was awesome. Just threw it on in the background and ended up watching all the episodes that are out so far. There are some fantastic skits on there.

    Re: The Netflix Thread!

Castlevania s3 is out. I really dug it. Some of the animation felt janky and the banter between Sypha/Trevor was a bit forced at the beginning but it was all in all a strong season. Loved how expansive the story felt between Isaac, Trevor/Sypha, Hector, and Alucard. That last episode in particular is terrific and a great culmination of all the stories. Had the scope of peak Game of Thrones at times. Really looking forward to s4 and to what those producers will do with DmC, Assassin's Creed and Hyper Light Drifter. I'll absolutely love more series in this style.

Hopefully Netflix doesn't pull the plug on this like they've done with a lot of its more interesting series.

This show 'Midnight Gospel' just came out...and it's a blast, tbh. I was skeptical of it just because I'm not usually into these "Adult Swim" style nonsense-shows.

But I've really been liking it. I would begin to explain it...but I really just can't hahaha.

Probably because it isn't an Adult Swim style show at all

I don't know...the animation style and adult themes just remind me of something I'd see on the modern Adult Swim lineup. I wouldn't compare it to the good days of "classic" Adult Swim (shows like Sealab, ATHF, Space Ghost C2C)...but, I feel like there's a lot of stuff like 'Superjail' or 'Rick and Morty' that this instantly seemed like it was pulling from. Plus, the whole "going out of the way to be gross or shocking" vibe...which is another thing that I think Adult Swim has come to represent. Overall, I'd say Midnight Gospel does pull from a bunch of shows...but I'm happy that it also avoided pitfalls of some of the ones that I tend not to like.

I watched the first two episodes and I'm not high on it. It's certainly unique and I could see it's value, but I didn't really enjoy it. It's probably just a bit too... conceptual(?) for me. I would probably only like it a lot if I was tripping on acid.

It's definitely a "good in small doses" type show. I watched the first three episodes, and my enjoyment diminished the more that I watched. Not because I grew to dislike it...but, because it ends up being "too much" at some point. I think it's also one of those shows that probably has some really great episodes, and others that are hard to watch (based solely on what the subject of discussion tends to be...and what your level of interest is for that subject). But that could also be said for any normal podcast.

    Re: The Netflix Thread!

Binged through all of it last night. I found it quite interesting. The discussions tended to lean on the abstract & vague but the visual story was always pretty gripping and it was actually hard to concentrate on just one or the other. Because of the conversations abstractness, you really needed to hone in on it and focus to keep up but the visual story was also so unique that you couldn't just focus on the conversation. But because they're divergent, you can't really take in both at once. Really interesting experiment. I wish the conversations had been a bit more riveting but maybe it wouldn't have worked with something more direct and concrete.
